I’m in the UK, where we get to pay for local calls, hence the need to buy an unlimited access package; and unlike with other providers, I can only keep using my AOL address if I keep paying the subscription. I also like the fact that I can use my other pop3 addresses through my AOL connection, including to send, which other providers don’t allow (actually, AOL insist that it isn’t possible for me to do this, but I can; except when I can’t!).

AOL offered unlimited internet access for a reasonable fixed fee first, plus they charge to my credit card. Everyone else charges to your phone bill, which isn’t in my name. So I guess I have to live with their little quirks. All running pretty well so far, though.

Couldn’t come here without aol, so can’t really leave it out. In the end I gave up and re-installed completely. Had a whole load more problems. This time, I abandoned the idea of doing a ‘clean install’ with my upgrade disk. Installed 98 first, then upgraded. Compared to the minimum 5 attempts to get a ‘clean’ installation of Me, it went fine; and so far all is running smoothly (including AOL – version 6, which is also the only Win 2000 compatible version).

Tried running Spider with FreeMem Pro (trial) installed. It indicated that I had plenty of RAM at all times. Could this program be managing to eat up processing power (I have a 600Mhz PIII and 256MB, so a card game realy shouldn’t slow me down)?

First question: how many hard drives do you have? If you have more than one, the obvious response to your bios error message is that your primary drive has either become disconnected from the IDE slot or lost power (or failed, god forbid!) Check the connections. If you have a second drive on secondary IDE controller and are able to boot into Me, then that is now your C: drive. This would mean that you have formatted it and installed Me onto it, so anything there previously is gone.
Given that your system was running 95, I would guess that you probably don’t have the most up to date bios (unless you have updated it). You motherboard manufacturer could probably supply you with an updated bios, hopefully with instructions on how to flash (if not, ask for help). It might help. Your existing bios may not be compatible with Me. Definitely necessary for an upgrade to Win 2000, so might be an issue for ME.

Have had the same problem. I don’t know what the cause is, beyond that it has something to do with available memory. It gets very slow when other things are running, but then it can do it with no other applications running (apart from whatever windows thinks it needs to have open). The only solution I could find is to turn off the animations. Not as pretty, but much faster.
