Is your monitor driver set as ‘plug’n’play monitor? Your model is in the Me driver database, so you could try updating to the specific TVM driver.

Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for. Now, why didn’t I think of using KB? Probably because that’s the first time it’s actually had a solution to a problem I’ve had…

Me hides stuff in drop-down menus that you haven’t used recently. There should be a double arrowhead at the bottom of the menu – click to expand/ hold cursor over it. That should reveal what you’re looking for.

Any software that can make sound come out of your speakers! Things like Realplayer, WIndows Media player, any CD or MP3 player. They all have their own volume control. RealNetworks or Microsoft software shouldn’t change the master volume settings, but other similar software might. Don’t know about the soundcard – what type/make/model is it? Have you tried reinstalling or updating the drivers?

Some applications change the volume settings. Have you installed any new media players or the like recently? If an application has been told to go to minimum volume, it may be resetting the main volume control periodically or at startup.

I’ve run both NAV 2000 & 2001 under Me, without any trouble (but I definitely recommend the upgrade to 2001). The one thing that could definitely cause trouble is doing the upgrade with NAV installed. Microsoft tell you to disable anti-virus protection before upgrading, but I would recommend uninstalling NAV and then reinstalling after a successful upgrade.
Also, having tried it both ways, I would always do the upgrade over 98, and not tried for the ‘clean install’, which gave me problems every time.
I have heard of problems with HP printers and Me. You might want tot try removing the printer through Device Manager and re-installing it. If that doesn’t work, HP are very helpful at dealing with technical queries through their website (http://www.hp.com or .co.uk and no doubt others), in my experience.

I see your problem. Unless you’re adding and removing a lot of software, presumably a lot of your system must stay the same from day to day. Could you just selectively back up the parts that change from day to day (e.g. My Documents)? An occasional backup of the rest, when you have the time, ought to do. It would probably work best/easiest if your files, operating system and other software were on seperate partitions. I always find that to be useful anyway, when windows goes into meltdown – makes it easier to reinstall, if worst comes to worst (and it tends to!).
I would suggest using Drive Image as an alternative to MSBackup, but of course it doesn’t work with Me (or Win 2000). Haven’t tried any other dedicated backup software, but they seem to be mostly DOS based, so I guess they’ll have the same compatibility issues.
Have you tried scheduling the backups? It should be possible to schedule the multiple backups to run one after the other. I you’re leaving the PC on overnight anyway, it should be possible to set up for a convenient time, unless you keep very irregular hours!
Sorry I can’t think of a fix for your problem, but I hope you might get something useful out of this.

I can’t help with fiddling with the BIOS, but before you do anything that drastic, try: Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Adapter > Change. Assuming that you know where the drivers for your new card are (on a cd-rom, I assume), then specify the location and install. That should sort you out.

I read an article recently that said that large partitions wasted a lot of capacity because of the nature of FAT (so not an issue for Win 2000), but you should still have plenty of space. Perhaps the controller for the removable drive can’t deal with a file (i.e. backup image) beyond a certain size. It may be failing before it reaches a size that it has coped with befor, but maybe that’s the point at which it realises how big the file is going to be. Could you break up the backup, e.g. into software and data?

    • in reply to: Backup failure #529496

How big is the removable drive and is there anything else on it? If there isn’t (or shouldn’t be), have you tried formatting it before doing the backup?

    • in reply to: Tweakui #529493

You could try reinstalling it and then running uninstall again; but if it’s not causing you any problems, then I’d leave it alone!

    • in reply to: Tweakui #529492

You just try rebooting to DOS from Me! You can get a DOS prompt within Windows, but otherwise you’d need to boot into DOS from a floppy.

    • in reply to: Changing opening sounds #527388

It is indeed. Scroll down to ‘Start Windows’, click to see current sound. You can browse through your files to select another sound – even a whole song, though having tried that, I wouldn’t recommend it!

There is a detailed explanation of how to load PWS reom the NT4.0 service pack in the June (#177) issue of PC Plus. Not simple and could cause problems if you do it wrong. If you can’t get a copy, I can post the details – but don’t have time right now. Sorry!

Maybe there should be an ISP forum! I rarely have a problem logging on to AOL or losing the connection, which I have had with Lineone. The connection is also as fast as a standard dial-up gets, which not all others can claim, especiallly at peak use times. Btinternet is appalling and Virgin still don’t seem to have gotten around to unlimited access (and I don’t mean off-peak).
Everyone will let me access all my pop3 email, but only AOL will let me send smtp under any identity. The others only permit the use of the address they provided. Mostly, I am very happy with AOL. It’s just the bloated browser that causes trouble. If only they would do a trimmed down version, based on Opera.
