AskWoody LoungerUSA. Normal phone service (not PBX or “office” line).

AskWoody LoungerThanks. I’ll leave it USB for now (it works – so why break it!), but will experiment some boring afternoon to see if there is some advantage to using the NIC instead…

AskWoody LoungerOctober 22, 2004 at 1:05 pm in reply to: Deciphering INF to manually edit registry (XP Pro sr 2) #890881When I try to install the INF file, it doesn’t do anything. The cursor blinks, then nothing else happens.
I’m wondering if anyone can decypher the registry modifications, so that I can go in and add them myself. Specifically, the … (comma, comma, comma) ??? What values are being skipped there in the regedit?

AskWoody LoungerOoops. I didn’t see that. Thanks. I think the sticker shock blinded me…

AskWoody LoungerGood idea, but Live Meeting is way too expensive at $375/month for five seats. Yikes! Unfortunately we don’t have Windows 2003 Server anywhere… we need either a as-needed temporary Server that can be loaded and unloaded, or a hosted system — I think hosted might be the best because of routers and firewalls doing their jobs…

AskWoody LoungerThanks. I should have said “not really expensive” rather than free… we’ll pay for whatever we need but can’t afford the WedExs out there… For the benefit of other readers of this thread, I did check out several of these applications:
RealVNC = free open-source, you load a server component that starts as a service on XP, then other computers that load the small client can use the server’s IP address to attach and see the screen. That’s about it. The client can then use the mouse and “do” stuff on the Server side. I didn’t see any chat or other communication, so a telephone call seems to be a must to supplement this type of access.
ShareItNow = one-to-one is free and pay for multiple connections. Same as RealVNC but with additional typing/chat communication. Instead of a client app, the clients connect to a website and just use whatever browser they have.
eBlvd = seems to be online audio AND access to a toll-free conference number for around $30/month. App sharing, audio, teleconference (so you could do either Internet-based audio or phone calls to supplement). I haven’t gotten my free demo account yet, so hope to find out if this really works the way they say…

AskWoody LoungerJuly 5, 2004 at 9:54 pm in reply to: Making Opera default for all webpage references (Opera 7.5) #847823I’m running XP-SP1, and in that “Set Program Access and Defaults” I only have the option of setting IE or Mozilla (Firefox). I don’t see Opera. I just UN-installed MyIE for good measure, rebooted, re-installed Opera 7.5.1, and still no-go. HTML and HTM pages on my local drive open up in Opera when double-clicked on, but when a program tries to access “the browser” that is when it doesn’t work. Yeah, I also un-selected the IE options to make it check if it is default. I vaguely remember reading about this problem before, but I don’t remember the fix.
–modified message
I think I fixed it. I went in to File Explorer (My Computer / C: ) and set TOOLS / OPTIONS / FILE TYPES and set the URL:_whatever_ to use Opera. Seems to work now.

AskWoody LoungerThanks. This is a good resource. I struck out doing just a Google of “web conferencing” and such. I think this might do it for me.

AskWoody LoungerThanks – I’ll install Ethereal tonight. I have a feeling something is trying to phone-home via IE and that is what is messing me up…
