It is strange, something in the options settings in the Lenovo W7 image I guess. Anyway, it’s a good outcome from my point of view. Thanks for the confirmation that it wasn’t discontinued or something, that was helpful.

No, Photo Viewer wasn’t a right click option, I also tried to associate jpg’s with it but it wasn’t an option there either. But I just uninstalled all windows live and now photo viewer is available and is the default for .jpg’s. Interesting…

Hmmm, this one has Windows live photo gallery I don’t want anything to do with “live”, but no photo viewer. It’s not on the windows feature list either. I’ll uninstall live (came on the PC) and see what happens.

No, I mean “Windows Photo Viewer”, here it is on a W7-32 PC.

    • in reply to: Hibernation loses Internet connectivity! #1265008

I think it would help if you do some basic troubleshooting (when it hasn’t reconnected) to figure out where the disconnect is:

Do you know how to ping? If not look it up via google.

      Ping the router’s IP

      Ping your ISP’s DNS server

      Ping yahoo.com

Open a command window and at the prompt type:

      ipconfig /release

      and hit Enter

wait a few seconds and at the prompt type:

      ipconfig /refresh

      and hit Enter

and let us know what happens.

(I used to have this problem all the time with XP but Win 7 reconnects automatically for me every time.)

    • in reply to: Automated Speed Test of Internet Connection? #1263606

For lack of any more elegant solution for 3 days now I’ve been running an hourly automated test using one of the well known speed test webpages, with a capture and save of the result. Ping time doesn’t correspond very well to connection speed. So far the results confirm what I suspected, despite losing a major lawsuit some months ago, and promising not to do it anymore, it appears AT&T is selling DSL bandwidth they can’t support except during the off hours when they have low system utilization

    • in reply to: Microsoft Security Essentials install problem #1263396

I also had the same error last year and went through many, many, emails with Microsoft support but got there in the end. I’m no expert but the problem appears to be that the MSE install gets corrupted, and then can’t be overwritten by a good install so it has to be cleaned out manually. Anyway, no guarantees it will work for everyone, but this was the procedure that MS eventually provided that worked, it was painful, but it was worth it in the end, MSE has worked out very well for me.

      Step 1:

Please follow the below steps to delete the existing Microsoft Antimalware and Microsoft Security Essentials folder in the following locations:

Location 1: Check in “C:Program filesMicrosoft Security Essentials”

      – If the “Microsoft Security Essentials” folder is found in the above location please delete it.

On deleting the folder please go the next location.

Note: If you receive an “Access Denied” error message while deleting the above folder please follow the below steps to provide permissions to the folder and delete it.

      Steps to provide permissions:

      1. Click on Start.

      2. Click on Run and type CMD and press Enter.

      3. Copy and paste the below command in the command prompt window and press enter.

      Cacls “C:Program filesMicrosoft Security Essentials” /t /g everyone:f

      4. Type Exit to close the command prompt window.

      5. Now try to delete the folder in location 1.

Location 2: Check for “C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft Antimalware”

To access the folder, copy and paste the below location in the Run command and press Enter:

C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft Antimalware

Try to delete the folder. If you are not able to delete the folder, please follow the below step:

      Steps to provide permissions:

      1. Click on Start.

      2. Click on Run and type CMD and press Enter.

      3. Copy and paste the below command in the command prompt window and press enter.

Cacls “C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft Antimalware” /t /g everyone:f

      4. Type Exit to close the command prompt window.

      5. Now try to delete the folder in location 2.

Location 3: Check for “C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft Security Essentials”

To access the folder, copy and paste the below location in the Run command and press Enter:

C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoft Microsoft Security Essentials

Try to delete the folder. If you are not able to delete the folder, please follow the below step:

      Steps to provide permissions:

      1. Click on Start.

      2. Click on Run and type CMD and press Enter.

      3. Copy and paste the below command in the command prompt window and press enter.

Cacls “C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoft Microsoft Security Essentials” /t /g everyone:f

      4. Type Exit to close the command prompt window.

Now try to delete the folder in location 3.

      Step 5:

Please follow the below instructions to download the appropriate version of the Microsoft Security Essentials for your operating system:

      1. Go to the below download link:

      http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/?mkt=en-us

      2. Click on “Locales and Languages” Right below the Download button and you will find following three download options for different versions of operating systems

      Windows XP 32-bit

      Windows Vista/WIN7 32-bit

      Windows Vista/WIN7 64-bit

      3. Select the appropriate version of the Microsoft Security Essentials and follow the On-Screen instructions to install the Microsoft Security Essentials.

      4. Restart the computer after the installation completes.

Why don’t you create a larger file and use Robocopy to copy it both ways? Robocopy is free with Windows and has a nice summary of performance.
You can use FSUTIL to create the file – again, free with Windows.
      Usage : fsutil file createnew
      Eg : fsutil file createnew C:testfile.txt 1000

      cheers, Paul

Thanks for those suggestions. I don’t have a problem creating that same functionality, and that’s essentially what I tested, what I’m missing is access to a big file on a fast server that will fully exercise the DSL connection (and whose owner won’t mind or notice me hitting it regularly). AFAIK the direct url for the files downloaded by e.g. speedtest are not publicly available. The object of the exercise is to generate evidence so that I can get AT&T to fix the problems with the line.

      Try this Sooty2 http://www.softwareqatest.com/qatweb1.html

Wow, great resource, a lot of good stuff there, at first sight I didn’t see anything specifically for this but it’ll take a while to pick through it all. Thanks.

    • in reply to: Use installed OEM version vs install retail ver #1261415

I strongly suggest keeping your OEM install, it probably has installed features specific to your laptop hardware which you will not find included in a generic retail package. You may be able to download them from the manufacturer but in my experience it can be a real pain.

    • in reply to: How to see the installed product key #1261414

Probably not if a thousand systems (or even a few less than that ) suddenly show up at Microsoft’s door with the same key…they’ll kill it pretty quick.

Exactly! I was thinking it would be a dfficult phone call when I have to speak to that guy in Mumbai to validate my re-install.
