When I try to get to the printer from Start (computername) I see the printer. When I select it I get this message:
“Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709). Make sure that you have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the network.”
I looked up error 709 and it says printer name is invalid. The printer name is KODAK5300AiO. scratch
One more thing, I can see the printer but it isn’t in the printer folder as suggested by your link. Does that mean it isn’t shared even though printer sharing is on, and password sharing is off?

Both machines are Vista. The Desktop is 32-bit and the Notebook is 64-bit. I need to install the printer on the Notebook.

      Doc,
I am a bit confused. When I try to add the printer and tell Vista it is a network printer, it can see the printer, but when I select it I get an error “Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure you have typed the name correctly and that the printer is connected to the network. The printer is connected and shared. And I changed it’s share name to have no spaces. If I tell Vista to add a local printer and select the Windows Update button, it does find 64-bit drivers for my printer but I’m not sure what good that does me. I tried adding a local printer where I told it the port in the format mentioned but when I selected “Next” it said “Access Denied”. I checked the permissions and everything looks ok…. What am I missing?

    • There is a D drive called Recovery which I assumed was were it stored info on restore points. I should check with Gateway though and see if there is such a thing. On your second question, yes, I created the folder to get all the shortcuts to pre-loaded junk out of the way until I am ready to deal with it.

    • Bob,
I don’t have a floppy disk drive so I will have to create a boot disk.

      Thanks much.

    • That is exactly the process I followed which resulted in the folder being left intact. Before XP I used to use a boot disk and FDISK and then FORMAT my C drive. I don’t believe that process left anything intact. I don’t know how to do that in Vista. Or, possibly you can’t do it anymore.

    • How do you do that with Vista? I have been searching on the Internet but haven’t found step-by-step instructions.

    • Bob,
I did the “install” option and the folder I created was on the C-drive. It was where I put all the shortcuts for stuff I wouldn’t install (like AOL) that came loaded on the PC. I put them there so I wouldn’t forget about them. After the “clean” install that folder is still there. Makes me feel like I should research how to do a FDISK with Vista. Since I have the Gateway CD, can I FDISK like before? And then when I boot with the CD will it then install Vista? I was leery of this because this is the first time I don’t have the actual Windows CD that I purchased.

I’m glad you brought up the MacBook Pro. I have always had the idea of getting a Mac someday and I was looking at Best Buy at their Pro. The salesman made it sound really good, saying things like the memory is only 2GB but that is sufficient in the Mac environment. I think I also saw that it can be upgraded to 4GB if necessary. As far as “freebie” software goes, I use AVG but the salesman said I won’t need it on the Mac. Likewise, Zone Alarm and Spysweeper. I use the free version of the first two. What about games? I do like a bit of solitaire and Mahjong now and then and the versions I have on my PC are freebies. I’ll have to look around and see what is available for a Mac. As far as regular software goes, I would need to get Office for Mac and eventually I want Photoshop Elements. That’s about it. My needs aren’t that complicated either. smile

      Thanks for your timely 2cents

This code does the same thing that my code does – works only after manually displaying the task pane. It must be a 2003 issue. Hans came up with code that works even if the task pane has not been displayed. Thanks, mbarron.

      That does it!! Thanks Hans.

    • in reply to: Windows Update History Missing (Home Premium SP1) #1107257

Most of mine agreed with the listed default Home Premium SP1 Services. There were a few that I had disabled that they had set to Manual – mostly having to do with Remote Access. But I changed them back to the Black Viper settings. I did contact Microsoft on the free line and their answer (just this morning) was that SP1 deleted the history and they are looking into it. So, I guess that’s that. I did tell the support person that I know of people with other versions of Vista that still have their history after SP1 but that fell on deaf ears. Supposedly they are going to check and call me back. I find it curious that we have to go to Black Viper to find out what the default services settings are. You would think Microsoft would have that in their KB.

    • in reply to: Windows Update History Missing (Home Premium SP1) #1107203

I manually updated to SP1 after which I used Black Viper to check the services and most of mine agreed with that list. I have searched the M$oft site for anything that might explain the loss of update history and was quite willing smile to accept kaplinb’s answer that it was by design. And it could be a difference between versions as you suggested. You’d just think it would be documented somewhere.

Joe, I can see the updates if I go to Windows Update, View Update History, and then click on Installed Updates. Before SP1 I was able to see all updates and failures just by going to View Update History. Where is it you see it and do you suppose there is a difference in this area between Ultimate and Home Premium? Also, I wonder how I can find a list of the default SP-1 Services settings?

Ah! Thanks for the info kaplinb. Now it makes sense. smile
