AskWoody LoungerJust go to the Intel site and download the needed drivers. I just installed 2 of the three listed (audio and ethernet) on an Alienware area-51. It is best if you know the chipset and motherboard so download and run CPU-Z found here http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php%5B/url%5D and it will provide all the info you need without installing anything.

AskWoody LoungerTo fix all your problems, Nero 7.7.5.1 has been released. Be aware that it is a 190mb download.

AskWoody LoungerAny reason why you stopped the installation? Is it because you want to practice your German?
-
WSsinjin
AskWoody LoungerYou just need to remember to download the files that have “Eng” in their name. FYI, you will need to download all new help files as they were not included in the update as of January 2nd. Simply download and copy into the correct folder to replace what is currently there.

AskWoody LoungerThanks for the info. After looking at the content blocking in Opera I am trying to figure a simple automated way to add and update items as is done in FF with the Filter Set G auto update. Opera is faster and scales everything on a web page that FF1.x or 2.x is not able to do which is important to me as my screens are high res (1920×1200 and 1680×1050 for my old laptop). I guess I am just looking for the best features of each browser to make my personal “ultimate”.

AskWoody LoungerYou are not the only one with problems. I gave up on 2.x and used Opera for a while but missed the ad blocking so I did a clean (deleted all Mozilla folders and used a reg cleaner) install of 1.5.0.9 and my favorite extensions and have not regretted it. Everything performs faster and more stable without question. I know a few of my friends are experiencing stability issues. The only way to explain it is that FF2.x is a bit “hinky” for many.

AskWoody LoungerDisableing TabBrowserPreferences Extension fixed the problems I was having at the Lounge.
And just to clarify from Leif’s post , the new tabs were within the pop-up. Thank you all again and it looks like I will wait for an update before re-enableing that extension.

AskWoody LoungerI am not sure what changed between this morning and tonight except that I ran a boot-time disk check mid-day, and now no more errors in FF with the calendars. I still have a problem with the Click TagPanel here in the lounge. When attempting to put a url tag or click on the help in the open CTP I get a new blank tab with the label shown below. When I tried to add a smilie all I got was a blank tab.

AskWoody LoungerThanks for the thought, sadly that was the first place I looked. At this point I may live with it for a week or two more and see if I receive a miraculous solution from electron heaven. If that does not happen I will reinstall FF from the ground (hard drive) on up adding one extension at a time to see what happens.

AskWoody LoungerFor me and the five laptops in my office, I have had zero issues with TrendMicro Internet Security Suite. I converted to it in 2003 because HouseCall made me a believer when I scanned clients computers and removed problems their AV did not find. All my computers are and have been virus/spyware and trojan free since then. I also like the added spam filter for Outlook and the average of 3 updates per day.

AskWoody LoungerIf in your position a new computer is needed now I would use XP. Vista has a great deal of virgin code that equals a lot of bugs, not to mention driver issues and conflicts as well as 3rd party software problems. Both Win2K and XP got a big boost of compatibility and stability after the first service pack. If you would like to move to Vista later on just make sure all your hardware is Vista ready and get a boxcar full of ram.

AskWoody LoungerSo it then appears that Acronis has addressed the issue with their “Universal Restore” add in, as it now makes TI truely disaster proof and keeps TI only a backup solution without it.

AskWoody LoungerIf I undestand you correctly your original example stated that you made an image with computer A and it died so you bought computer B to replace it. Now you want selected settings only from A transfered to B. Why would you not want the entire image? If you wanted to restore a file from the original Jeff profile would there not have to be a Jeff profile on the new computer? As for the blurb from Acronis in my previous post, it was the entire item on their page about Universal Restore. You may find the PDF for the product on their site somewhere.

AskWoody LoungerPerhaps some of you may change to TI Workstation 9.1 with the Universal Restore add-in instead of using TI Home to solve the new machine with an old machine image problem. The following is from the Acronis web site:
Acronis Universal Restore allows you to restore to different hardware or to a virtual machine, providing complete disaster recovery. Disaster recovery planning and tools that enable business continuity are requirements for every business. Acronis Universal Restore prepares you for even the most unforeseen events.
How does the Acronis Universal Restore feature work?
The feature continues the Acronis True Image benefit of being easy to use. In order to use this option effectively, you must first prepare your Acronis True Image environment.
Preparation
Step 1: Install the Acronis Universal Restore option. Please note that Acronis True Image 9.1 must be licensed and installed for Acronis True Image Universal Restore to function.
Step 2: Create bootable media with the Universal Restore option selected.
Now you are ready to replace any system!
Restoration with Acronis Universal Restore
You can restore an image to a new system in 5 easy steps.
* Step 1: Boot your replacement system with the bootable media you created and select Recovery in the Acronis True Image menu
* Step 2: Select the image to restore and the Acronis Universal Restore option
* Step 3: Acronis Universal Restore initiates the restore process
* Step 4: Acronis Universal Restore detects the hardware and installs drivers
o The product detects the machine type and installs appropriate drivers for Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
o The product detects hard disk controllers (SCSI and IDE)Or
o The product prompts you for driver locations
* Step 5: The machine rebootsOnce this process has completed, you have a working system to a replacement machine. No reinstallation of the operating system and applications is required. No re-configuration to join the network is required, as the product retains Security Identifier (SID) and network information of the system during recovery.

AskWoody LoungerBy “best”, do you mean the most complete or the safest? As a general rule, the smaller the program is the better it will uninstall. Sadly, when you get to large programs like AutoCAD you will find 550-600 leftover registry entries. Many Antivirus programs like Symantec and McAfee will leave only 50-100 registry entries after an uninstall. Even though there are less, they usually are in a worse place or have changed critical values. When you call the vendor and tell them they say that is typical and do not worry about it. This attitude has spawned all the registry cleaners you will find on the web. I have come to the conclusion for myself that a pristine image before an install on a test machine or using a virtual drive to test a program is the best.
