Why not give F-Prot a try. I have heard good things about it with XP. I had to give up McAfee when I switched to Win2K. F-Prot can be found here http://www.complex.is/cgi-bin/home_pager

    • I had some issues similar to yours with the same two versions of office. I found that everything with Win98se went into the toilet 3 months after I removed SBE and used Premium. You probably either have a unlocatable conflict or a degraded operating system. The solution for me was a clean install of Win2000Pro instead of Win98se after a little ram upgrade(now 256, was 128) You could just reformat and reinstall Win98 but since you are spending the time you should consider spending the $159 here http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/details.asp?productID=142 for a full version of Win2K SP2 plus a little ram to get a 30% boost in application speed and a huge boost in reliability. It has been 10 months with Win2K and not 1 BSOD. Good Luck

Thanks Dave. I guess it was too simple to think to use TweakUI. I got in the habit of making all my changes manualy. I guess you could say I have become a ‘Registry Explorer’ of sorts. bingo
After a bit of sleep I realized that the reg-cleaner (made by Jouni Vuorio) I use has a tab section devoted to taking care of my problem. Thanks again for your suggestion cheers

Have you tried bumping up to IE5.5SP2? Sometimes this will eliminate a corrupt file. If you want to live on the edge you can download IE6 RTM (release to manufacturing Build 2530) It is NOT on the MS web site. It is posted on a few European sites.

    • in reply to: wbemcore.log #537476

After looking at the dates and times of the entries in the log on my laptop, it appears to me that the dates relate to a shutdown. I do not shut down my laptop during the week (I usually hibernate) and the entries are mostly on the weekend when I would do some sort of maintainance (boot time defrag, etc) or something as an Administrator. You may wish to keep a paper log of the dates and times that you shut down and the times you boot up for a couple of days or a week and then compare them with the wbemcore.log in your computer.

    • in reply to: pst file #537244

Howard is correct. You will need to show the hidden files to find the folder with the .pst file in it. Also while you can see everything you will also find a TEMP file that is hidden in the Local Settings folder. This TEMP folder can aquire a lot of junk and should be emptied every so often.

    • in reply to: IE5.01SP2 missing from add and remove programs #537165

To date this is the best solution I have found. If you wish to have IE back in add/remove it can be done the next time you upgrade. If you use the IE Homepage (instead of the Windows Update page ) and select save to disk rather than run from current location. After the install, the IE entry will return. As an added benifit all the needed files will be on your computer (by default in “c:Windows Update Files”)so you can burn a disc and not have to be bothered to download that version ever again. It appears that (at least with W2K ) only the files for that (or whichever you choose) operating system are downloaded. I just did this with two laptops upgrading from IE5.01SP2 and IE5.5SP1 and it worked on both.

    • in reply to: Missing Office 2000 icons (Office 2000 SR1) #536127

      Marilyn,
I have to ask if you installed office as Administrator and why did you have to install office97? If the latter was because you were upgrading, you could have put in your old office disc when the upgrade searches for a previous install then put the upgrade disc back in to continue with the install. This way there are not any legacy issues.

    • in reply to: IE5.01SP2 missing from add and remove programs #534737

Thanks for the help. I repaired IE with a command prompt listed in the KB article. Unfortunately IE still does not appear in the add/remove list. I believe that the application of WIN2K SP2 removed this entry. My base OS was a disc with WIN2K SP1 Does anyone think the entry would return if I installed IE 5.5 SP1? It isn’t a big deal, just a little annoyance. Thanks again.

    • in reply to: Incomplete Border Printing (Office2K SR-1) #532457

Thank you all. The change to measure from the text solved the problem. As a separate issue, why does Publisher 2K not have this problem? Anyway, thanks again.
