AskWoody LoungerSince there is a leftover reference you may want to try CCleaner and/or another registry cleaner and perform some standard maintenance after by running CHKDSK and SFC. Also many times these little nasties can only be removed in safe mode and system restore needs to be turned off to be cleared. Good Luck.

AskWoody LoungerFor me this build was a bit buggy and hung so I uninstalled it and went back to version 2007 (1.7.0.422) Just one persons experience.

AskWoody LoungerYou may want to delete the current hibernation file and create a new one in the off chance it is corrupt. Then run Memtest for the memory modules.

AskWoody LoungerYou stated that you used the K-lite codec pack. Did you install the Quicktime Alternative pack in addition to the basic or full K-lite pack?
-
WSsinjin
AskWoody LoungerYou may want to dump Quicktime, WMP and Realplayer and use K-Lite available here http://www.codecguide.com/about_mega.htm%5B/url%5D it plays everything except for VR

AskWoody LoungerYou also may want to look at Adobe Capitivate 2 found as a Demo on the Adobe website. You will need to create an account which is free to get any trial doownload. It will be fully functional for 30 days. You can view small movies on what can be done to see if it is what you are looking for prior to downloading.

AskWoody LoungerYou might want to try AutoStreamer found at http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=223562%5B/url%5D and slipsteam the service pack into a new CD image so the fresh install will be at the SP2 level. Then using AutoPatcher found at http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89%5B/url%5D you can update you installation totally prior to going online. I used Autopatcher today on my fresh out of the factory computer and it added 156 updates in 13 minutes including a reboot (estimated time posted was 1hr and 29min). This new box is fast
(quad core extreme overclocked to 3.2, 10K hard drives, etc) so expect your time to be longer.

AskWoody LoungerYou would save yourself a great deal of time, effort and energy if you use AutoPatcher. Found at http://www.autopatcher.com/downloads/%5B/url%5D This is a free download (very big, May 2007 is 304MB). All you do is check the box next to what you want and walk away for the designated time it displays, which has been 45 minutes to 1 hour on the machines I have done. To view what is in it go here http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=564209%5B/url%5D for the list as it it is too long to post.

AskWoody LoungerAutoPatcher as Joe suggested is the way to go. Basically all you do is download the latest “full” release (and possibly an update) then check the boxes next to what you want to install and walk away for the time it tells you (typically 45 minutes to an hour) and then you are done. The full release will have a number of extras like tweakui, registry changes, etc all for you to install or not. The review part of your request appears to be a manual Google search and read.

AskWoody LoungerSorry I did not post the link. The link Big Al posted is NOT the one I was referring to. The test I referenced is found at http://www.memtest.org/%5B/url%5D and it is FREE. You just need to download the iso and burn it to a CD and then boot from it. The current version is 1.70. It is the first link if you google memtest, unfortunately it is the third link if you google memtest86. Again my apologies for any confusion.
-
WSsinjin
AskWoody LoungerIf you want to check the memory then download and run “memtest86”. It is an iso that you burn and use it to boot with. It is all automatic and FREE. If you changed hardware you need to run a repair install to replace the HAL (hardware abstraction layer) to have the hardware talk to each other correctly. Good luck.

AskWoody LoungerI have had Windows have a Grey Goose moment as you describe (cannot remember). If you run some basic maintenance it usually clears up. My suggestions are: 1) empty the personal profile temp folder, it is hidden and is a garbage dump. 2) run chkdsk, you may have to do this more than once 3) run SFC/scannow (system file checker) 4) download and run memtest, it is free and it cannot hurt. After performing these items and several cold boots my problems dissappeared.
Good luck.

AskWoody LoungerI was able to fix that on one laptop (mine) by running chkdsk at boot-up. After that I ran sfc/scannow and have not had an issue like that since.
