You need to go to MSN and ask is the short answer. You will need to have set up an account with them with a user name and password. Your POP3 server will look something like “mail.msn.net” sans quotes and your SMPT will probably be identical. It will take you longer to find the page on their site telling you what you want than actually doing it (about 60 seconds). Good luck!

Why would a reasonable person looking for a first rate ISP ever consider AOL question

    • in reply to: Opinions -W2K over XP? #613052

From a stability standpoint I know our Win2K laptops are better than our newer XP Pro laptops. No strange quirkiness, no driver issues and now with SP3 addressing another 800 zillion bugs it should be even more stable. So far the three best parts of XP are 1) Clear Type on a LCD, 2) Instant logging on to different networks, 3) Driver rollback (which wouldn’t be needed if XP wasn’t so finiky) As you can see I like Win2K. Just comparing my old laptop with Win2k and my wife’s new laptop with XP pro, I have had ZERO crashes since I installed Win2K (11/2yrs ago) and she gets mouse freeze regularly bummer (even with the latest touchpad drivers) , and program crashes cooked , as do millions of other users. All you need to do is look at this forum and the XP forum and see the difference in the quantity of problems and their severity.

Good choice of solutions on your part. Did you manage to install SP3 after all was corrected question

I found the following in a newsletter for XP but it may also apply to Win2K.

***Windows XP can be slow when trying to access a folder full of media files (i.e. AVI/MPEG/DAT). Although I can’t find anything on Microsoft’s Web site that addresses this problem, it was still brought to our attention that there is a fix. Now, this fix will require you to edit your registry so I will STRONGLY refer you to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article – Q322755 for the steps on how to back up your registry (REMEMBER: registry tweaking can be tricky!). Click the Start button, go to the Run command, type “Regedit,” and click OK. Once inside the Registry Editor, click Edit, then Find. In the “Find What” field, type in “{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}” (without the quotes) and click Find Next. Once the Registry Editor finds this folder, you will see that inside it is a folder named InProcServer32. Click on this folder, and delete both registry keys inside. Now, just exit the Registry Editor and reboot. With any luck, this will get rid of this sluggishness for you Windows XP users. ***

Before doing this I would defrag and run CHKDSK

In theory thinks you should be able to install the installer from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release…ReleaseID=32832%5B/url%5D without having a previous version on your machine (with a web install or saving it to your harddrive). You also may very well have a few registry entries leftover from the uninstall ouch of Norton causing additional problems. How about trying a repair or adding a small feature of Office if you have it on your system as it uses the installer and theoretically it would fix the problem. If you want to try a reg cleaner/manager to find all your orphan entries and a whole lot more, a great free one called Reg Cleaner can be found here http://www.jv16.org/%5B/url%5D The only other option would be to check the link on my previous post about SP3 not installing and follow the suggestions in the MS KB article and attempt the install again. With that said, I wish you the best of luck. cheers

Installing SP3 can affect your installer. If this is the case go here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;en-us;q324631%5B/url%5D to fix it.

I agree. exclamation I usually like to wait for the first service pack before making the plunge into the “bug pit”. Buy it if you need to live on the edge immediatly but if you wait one to four weeks it will be sold for about $18 at most system builder sites as the current NAV2002 is now priced. One example is http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/details.asp?productID=519%5B/url%5D

I am happy it was a simple fix. thumbup
You must remember that you as a user can do everything correctly with a computer and something will eventually go bonkers all by itself. I have found that running CHKDSK three or four times a month seems to help keep things straight. I do not run SFC very often, usually just when things appear to get a bit off. cheers

This printer does this by default so when a print job is done it can removed from the printer all ready to staple or whatever. If you wish to reverse this order you can do it in printer properties. Properties–>General–>Printing Preferences–>Layout–>Page Order and select the other option-back to front instead of front to back–>click all of the apply and ok buttons and the print order will be reversed. cheers

    • in reply to: Restart and Shut Down does not work #611384

Push and hold in the power button until it shuts down (about 5-7 seconds). Prior to shutdown and after you re-start run chkdsk and sfc.

I beleive XP does not listen to you when you make changes. XP is like a child that turns a deaf ear towards a parent or authority figure. scold I have had a few such problems. First, the hide unused icons option in the sys tray took a few repeated implimentations to finally stick. At this point I am yelling argue at the views option in the Garbage Bin, me wanting to see the garbage listed by date deleted and XP wanting an alphabetical arrangement. I personally beleive all these changed system settings only take true hold after System Restore makes a new back-up or three. thinks cheers

I have found that two things may help. Try a boot time defrag. If that doesn’t do it then turn off System restore then perform a boot time defrag. Then hopefully you will be able to repartition and then re-activate system restore if you wish.

    • in reply to: Acronis True Image #610183

I think I am going to buy it as they have a $10.00 US special thumbup (for the whole program not $10 off)going on for people with a copy of Ghost on their hard drive. I just bought a copy of Ghost 2002 to handle NTFS that the old version I have cannot and found out it doesn’t support any PCMCIA device hosed . Since I am an all laptop household with a PCMCIA CD-RW it means Acronis True Image or Drive Image 5.0. If anyone wants to buy a new, never used, unregistered copy of Norton Ghost 2002 for $20.00 US plus postage please send an email. broke

    • in reply to: W98 –> W2K Clean Install #609935

I guess I am a bit late to this party. I also do not understand the need or desire to use a Win98 boot disc. This link
http://www.bink.nu/Bootcd/%5B/url%5D is a page that shows another persons method of creating a bootable copy of Win2K with all your selected extras like Media Player 7.1, IE 5.5 SP2 etc. There are also other links to various other pages that may help. Sometimes the time spent on making a nice clean and tidy disc is more time consuming than applying all the needed updates after the fact and making an image of the drive or partition with Drive Image, Ghost or Acronis True Image. Best of luck on your endeavor.
