After my trip I checked the D-link support site and they had posted new drivers for my wireless card while I was away. After the driver upgrade, which was faster than me typing this post, the wireless connection was put in an earlier start-up position. My connection now starts instantly groovin on the XP Pro laptop. It has been almost two weeks without a problem. cool Thanks for all your suggestions. I still believe changing to NAV2003 which would have changed the start-up order of things would have fixed things as well.

Another alternative choice would be the registry utility found at http://www.jv16.org/%5B/url%5D . Use the ‘Starting Programs’ page in the registry tool. As it is said “Different strokes for different folks”.

As you stated hibernation is for laptops and this laptop is the only one that runs XP Pro and NAV 2002. The other 2 have Win2K and NAV 2003. If I remove the wireless card and boot up then put the card in it will connect in 7-10 seconds. If I leave the card in and boot up it takes 60-80 seconds to connect. The sequence of re-initializing the system and open apps is in a different order on the XP laptop in comparison to the Win2K laptops. I am still leanning towards NAV 2002 being the problem. I let you know in 2-3 weeks when I change to NAV 2003 and have run it for a while.

      Leif,
I took your suggestion and did an SP1 refresh the next day. Everything was running better until today. The refresh lasted 6 days then the same Blue screen error when it was sitting all by its’ lonesome and was going into hibernation from being inactive for 2 hours. I spoke with a friend in QC at HP (the offending laptop is a Dell) and she said that last year they had trouble with XP and Norton at startup and had NAV delay their startup to eliminate the conflict (Too many programs wanting the same memory IRQ range at the same time). I noticed that NAV 2003 has this delay and NAV 2002 does not. I think this is what causes the minute plus delay preventing the wireless card from connecting. I am going to change to NAV 2003 when I return from a trip in two weeks as my subscription is up in 6 weeks anyway. I am hoping that will fix this headache. If it doesn’t do the job I am tossing XP Pro out the window and putting Win2K on the laptop. The only thing that I will miss is the Cleartype function.

No I have not. I installed SP1 approx. 2 weeks after the release, whenever that was last year. Would there be any negative to re-installing SP1? Would the updates that were released after it need to be reinstalled?

This is just a progress report. Both Dave and Cowboy have essentially pointed to the same group of articles on the problem. All talk about Win2K not XP. After too much reading saying this was one of the most difficult of errors to track down the cause of, one article essentially stated two drivers trying to access the same memory and or IRQ at the same time at start up would be a possible source of the problem. I had already had the offending laptop with only the bare necessities at boot up but considered Services to be a potential conflict source. I looked over the list and changed the Zero Configuration Utility from Automatic to Manual since it was a service that had not started hence did not need to be set to Automatic. Keep your fingers crossed because my wife isn’t yelling “What’s wrong now?” anymore. I suppose there is always tomorrow for that. If this works for the next week I will consider the problem resolved and will post an update.

My solution was a little bit of Dave and a little bit of Mary from an old post on the Outlook board. In Outlook 2000 which I use I could only find a place to define where the PST Archive would be. (That would be the Dave part) For the main PST file I just closed Outlook and put the PST and the little setttings file that was in the same folder in a new folder in the root of “E” named Outlook. When I started Outlook again it moaned and groan that it could not locate the file and would I please tell it where I hid it. (That is the Mary part) Everything was perfect smile after that. Now, all my back-up is a complete copy of “E”. A simple solution for a complicated world. groovin

I guess this will be a group reply as you all brought up different viewpoints. First, I have a laptop with 3, but only 2 useable partitions. The ‘c’ is for a legacy save-to-disk file so I don’t get a message that it has changed or is missing when I boot up or resume from hibernation (625mb). My “D” drive is for my OS & Program Files (5GB). My “E” drive is for Data (4GB). That info was for Cowboy. If I understand Dave correctly I should just move the two folders from my profile that contain the Outlook PST and other Outlook stuff into the “E” drive and that would be a more efficient method than the rip the room out of the house to move the furniture that I was proposing out of laziness. If I do this will Windows automatically inform Outlook of the change? If not where in Outlook or the registry do I need to make the change? My bottom line desire is to back-up the “E” drive only as everything else is repairable or replaceable. I hope this clears up what I would like to do.

    • in reply to: XP upgrade from ME woes #647470

IMHO you must perform a clean install. An upgrade from ME or anything is the kiss of death. As for the drivers, even if you did perform an upgrade you would still have to have all the new model specific drivers from Compaq. Upgrade vs the full license; you should be able to buy a full OEM version for the same cost as an upgrade. Here in the US a complete OEM XPHome is $95-$100 and XPPro is $145-$150. There is no doubt that you will be much happier with XP.

    • One way to avoid the entire situation would be to purchase an OEM version of XP Pro. This is the same disc without a box and without support laugh from MS. For my money, OEM + Lounge = A Great Out Of Box Experience. The price for XP Pro OEM (Full, not an upgrade) is no more than $146.US available at http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/%5B/url%5D as well as many other online resellers like http://www.eastoutlet.com/allframes.htm%5B/url%5D $144.99US. Something to think thinks about anyway. cheers

Take a look at this free software from Western Digital. http://support.wdc.com/dlg/facts.asp%5B/url%5D
It maybe what you are looking for.
      Good Luck! cheers

    • in reply to: Best OCR Win XP Pro #635251

Another 2cents towards your software. In general I agree that just scanning in and saving would be your best choice now. Preparing for the future on your scans you may wish to use a 300dpi choice as OCR software likes that setting. cheers

    • in reply to: What is the latest on Win2K SP3 #630165

2cents For my old laptop SP3 has made some positive changes and only one small software problem. Most noticeably in the plus column is the shortened time into hibernation and shutting down as well as a general quicker response overall. clapping My time into both of these events (hibernation and shutdown) on a PII-366 w/256MB ram are measureably faster now. My Nokia phone sync software is now very tempermental, even after a reinstall. disappointed In comparison, my wife’s newer laptop running XP Pro SP1 with a PIII-1.2 w/256MB is now slower than I am in these two operations. I must also say that her new laptop can cold boot in approximately 45 seconds and resume from hibernation in 12 seconds. With that said, I am saving my pennies for a new P4 2.2 w/512MB. cheers

As far as deleting them if they are orphaned and have no use, it would be up to you. Personally, I use the same program and did delete the few that came up. It was fine for me but your mileage may vary.

    • in reply to: Add years to Calendar (Outlook 2K-SP1+/Win2K- SP3+) #624331

stupidme I guess I needed to shut down and reboot myself and Outlook for everything to return to normal. Mary clapping is quite correct about the calendar going on and on. Unlike myself, who apparently is suffering from sleep deprivation and having a senior moment a decade or two ahead of schedule. My apologies about the false alarm. thankyou
