It sounds like you need to run Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/%5B/url%5D and Spybot http://security.kolla.de/%5B/url%5D to rid yourself of some spyware calling home. If that doesen’t solve the problem go to http://www.pcflank.com/index.htm%5B/url%5D and run their tests to see where you are open to attack. Good luck.

If you are running SP4 you will have a problem with the D-Link card. I have a random “will not connect when coming out of hibernation or standby” and solved it by going back to SP3. frown D-Link is aware of this issue and is trying to correct it. This sounds like the answer you would get from Microsoft on any issue. shrug If you are at the SP3 level try the latest driver (it will work with the old D-Link utility). You should also try installing the latest video drivers as they are the culprit for many things. Last but not least, your card could be going off the deep end. Call D-Link and if it is and you are still under warranty you will get a replacement card. cheers

      Hello Bruce,
You really should try the free Download Express from MetaProducts. I t downloaded the file from the link you provided without a hitch smile . I stopped and started the download numerous times and it allways picked up as it was designed to. You can find the free d/l manager on this page. http://www.metaproducts.com/mp/mpProducts_Detail.asp?id=18%5B/url%5D

Zone Alarm Pro lets you see the IP address as well as the company and person that owns and is responsible for it. Only two came from my ISP all the others from Korea, China, Austalia, Spain, Taiwan, and here in the US were from nobody I know or want to know.

I just tried the Corel link with the free MetaProducts Download Express which is smaller, leaner and more spartan than Star Downloader. I prefer it because of those facts. And it performed perfectly. I use v1.3 which is more basic than v1.4 as you are on dial-up v1.4 may be better as it has a few more features cheers

Dump both WinPoet and the PPPoE function within XP and connect the modem to a D-Link DI-604 router ($30US after rebate and there is always a rebate) or router of your choosing. The router will take care of the authentication. I use Earthlink and never had to use WinPoet as they sent a BroadMax DSL modem which has the function built in and with the router there is never a logon once you run the set-up wizard you and all your computers are good to go. The router will also give you a bit more protection against any known bad guys wanting to control or rummage through you harddrive as it has some firewall functions built-in.

I must report that I am now having two problems with SP4. A USB CDRW problem if you try to copy a disc, this one appears to have a pre-SP5 fix to cure it if MS will give it to me. It is one of 25 on the pre-SP5 list. The other is with a D-Link dual mode wireless card. D-Link is aware of the problem and is trying to fix it with a driver update. I will wait a week or two before I go back to SP3 as a few things are running better.

    • in reply to: ZoneAlarm 4 Crashing #693131

I have had no problems yet. Two days ago put a new HD (Toshiba MK4019kGAX) 40 gig, 5400rpm in my old Dell Inspiron laptop (PII-366,256). I re-installed everything, fresh and clean. Win2K SP4, Office2K SP3, NAV 2003, Adobe Acrobat 5.05, IE6 SP1+, and the list goes on. Four partitions and me a happy camper for a little while. Zero problems with everything at this point. ZA Pro 4 does ask permission for the Spooler SubSystem APP for internet access on a cold boot. I may permanently deny it as there has been no downside by doing so. Does anyone know what this service does and what may be dependent on it?

Thom…If you use a download manager like the free MetaProducts Download Express, or GetRight, or Stardown, or whatever your taste is, the 129MB SP4 can be had while you sleep snore over 3 or 4 nights. You can then take the shipping charge money you saved and celebrate at the local pub. cheers

You may want to try WordPerfect 10 Pro for $59US found at numerous places like this http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/details.asp?productID=63%5B/url%5D as another alternative.

I really beleive you are causing yourself a headache. bash Buy a router like the D-Link DI-604 I use, $30US. No Earthlink software needed for any reason, the router takes care of it. It is fast to set up, after you plug it in about 90 seconds you are done, as it is incredibly simple using the built-in wizard. cheers

    • in reply to: Hibernation on laptop (XP Home) #671794

The hiberfil.sys is both an XP and W2K system file. You need to change your default search engine to Google and you will find thousands of pages showing you it is an NT5x (XP + W2K) file. It exists as a hidden system file as Jester has stated. It also only exists when hibernation is enabled. If you disable hibernation it goes away. That is why I suggested the procedure in my previous post. If your operating system has something broken to the point of not being able to create a hiberfil.sys file then you might want to search the JSI tip dtabase starting with this http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBH/tip3600/rh3631.htm%5B/url%5D page to create a new file manually.

    • in reply to: Hibernation on laptop (XP Home) #670600

You could have a bad hibernation file (hyberfil.sys). In the power options of the Control Panel disable (eliminate the option) to hibernate. Run CHKDSK with the option to find bad sectors and reboot. Defrag your harddrive and then re-enable hibernation. This will give you a new hyberfil.sys file and since you ran a defrag prior, it should be created (If you have enough contiguous space) without being fragmented. Good luck.

    • in reply to: Turn off long on window #669936

I agree with everyone that has previously posted. Make a separate user account with admin privilages and then if you want you can just check the box that lets you logon without a password and upon boot up, windows will blast right through the logon screen without any intervention from you.
