Thanks Hans – as always you have the answer.

Thanks Hans – worked a treat. I knew it could be done but didn’t know the code to use.

    • in reply to: Bold in drop down list #1172566

That is not possible, at least not without using complicated Windows API code.

I have just tried this by typing a lookup list starting at Cell A1, then in C2 I set data validation to look at this list. Once the drop down was created I then set conditional formatting to bold the required choice.

      See attached.

    • in reply to: large spreadsheet calculate problem #1163077

I have a spreadsheet approximately 1800 rows and 20 columns. It was taking forever to calculate and always hangs up to where i “End Task” I have 4 colums of if formula to check the data but still giving me a whopper of a headache. Any thoughts on getting this worksheet to calculate without a “not Responding” error.

      Thanks

If you spreadsheet if formulae are referring to other files in a VLookup formula, I have found that having the other files open at the same time can speed up the calculation process.

I don’t think Excel stores printer info with the workbook, so you’ll have to select the A3 printer each time.

(If I’m wrong, I’m sure someone will correct me soon)

I am not sure of the VBA Syntax so I would suggest that you record a macro that would select the printer required on opening the workbook and another to restore to the default printer on closing the workbook.

I’ve added 2 UDFs to your file and used them in two additional columns (so you can check them against your figures!)

      Rory,

Thanks heaps – your UDFs will save me heaps of time as the spreadsheet in question had over 20,000 rows of data that I had to extract these figures from.

Can you upload a sample file with a before and after examples?

Here is a sample extracted from the original file, showing original text data and desired output into 2 columns.

    • in reply to: Unable to view Tools/Options #1157829

I have an unusuall problem that has only cropped up this morning.
We are running Terminal Services with Office 2000 SP3 running on the system.
One user has reported that they can not view or set any tools/options within Excel.
They can not get even a simple thing like the vertical or horizontal scroll bars to display.
I wrote a small macro to turn them on, but this failed to make any difference also.
Other users are able to view the same spreadsheet on their logon with full access to the options.
Any ideas on how I can restore this functionality?
      Thanks
      Brian.

It may be that the user has accidentally turned off the menu’s – get them to use Alt-V whilst in Excel to bring up the view menu, then Toolbars and get them to select Standard and Formatting menu’s.

      Regards,
      Maria

    • in reply to: Macros on Shared & Protected worksheet (Excel 2003) #1147248

      Jan,

Our Company standardizes its software, so there would never be a situation where there are different versions of Excel. Thanks for the info though, as there could be a situation where someone has a different version at home, and wanted to do some work on the file at home – shouldn’t happen though as we are supposed to use a Citrix interface to access our work files from home (using the same software as at the office).

      Regards,
      Maria

    • in reply to: Macros on Shared & Protected worksheet (Excel 2003) #1146202

Jan, There is no need to go to a database as the file in question is only used for one week, a new file is created in the following week with any comments carried forward into a new week for old data and new data being brought in for users to comment on. As the data is so short lived, and can be recreated very easily then loss of data or data corruption is less of a concern.

Thanks Hans, This is just what I wanted – I just wasn’t too sure about the syntax to use.
