PS; I have just stumbled on the following web site:
      Spyware Warrior: Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm%5B/url%5D
which I think many of your novice readers like myself will find most helpful. Lots of software to avoid like the plague and at the end of the article, those that can be trusted like AVG & SpyBot. etc. Dave.

Hello again, what increasingly puzzles me is how one package is the best thing since sliced bread yet someone else waves a red flag at the mention of it’s name also, why are some free when others are quite costly. As I said earlier, I searched on Google and was left totally bewildered after seeing one set of experts giving 100% marks to RegCure when just next to it another gives it a bad write up. Just to clarify a valid point made by Jerry that many salesmen try to sell you stuff that is unnecessary, I totally agree BUT the shop owner I deal with is truly an exception & is in a league of his own in that he has – believe it or not – given me certain service and stuff for free and is always ready and willing to offer advice if I have a question. So where does that leave me at the end of this thread? Answer! With lots of reading to do and tread carefully in this field of mines planted by nutters and a host of software producers looking over the fence hailing the superiority of their wares over all their competitors. Thanks for all your input to this thread fellow loungers, till I turn the next corner and am confronted with another hurled. I have just Googled RegCure and these are some of the comments. How come you can buy 4 for $1 at Joe’s the DIY shop whilst 8 of them also cost the same at Burts the iron mongers round the corner. Wallmart seems to offer the best deal as they sell 16 of them for the knock price of $2 and believe it or not the same price tag is shown next to 24. All multiples of 4 but what is the significance and what is the product? Dave.

Hi Guys, what I thought was a simple question seems to have stirred up a little hornets nest so to speak with various views as to what (if any) is the way forward regarding the registry. First the shop owner whom I purchased the computer from said “There is no need to dabble with the registry” especially if one is a novice, then others make other conflicting comments. He further went on to say he simply uses a program called “Scan & Repair” which is all that’s needed. So I think the order of the day is CAUTION. As for Jerry’s final word on the matter I hasten to add that -as one of the the screen shots shows- I had already done a scan with it but immediately un-installed it and ran Spybot which thankfully reported there were – thankfully- no threats discovered. I have just done a Google search for RegCure and the results are to say the least scary with the first three hits reading like something from a horror comic. In contrast, I Googled RegScan, com and the results are to say the least very confusing to a novice like me. One find has the comment “5 Star Rated” whilst another says in effect do not touch it with a barge pole. Apart from the ones recommended I would appreciate it if you gentlemen would Google RegScan and enlighten me as to which one/s are Kosher. Thanks again sincerely. Dave.

SORRY also for repeating myself somewhat, I should have re-read the original post. Dave.

Hi Hans. I did a free scan with RegCure – which was recommended by a friend – and as the report shows, there are said to be 1376 problems. Please see attachment.
I have come across other free downloads in the past which are said to scan various innards of one’s computer only to discover when reading another forum thread that
it is just a ploy to get people to send a fee in exchange for a password which is said will erase the problems, when in fact the so called problems don’t exist. I will heed your advice and download the “slim” version and see what it achieves. Before I do, I think it prudent to wait for your reply to this post and maybe you can enlighten me further. Does it function like Spybot by exposing problems which then have to be deleted by clicking on the appropriate tab or does it do this automatic. Sorry for appearing so vague. Regards Dave.

Thanks again for every contribution, occasionally some of it is over my head but all in all, I get the gist of what you are all saying. Regards again. Dave.

Thank you gentlemen, perchance others – like myself – may have wondered what the significance is of these graphs and statistics. Kind regards Dave.

Hello Hans. No wonder my attachments had to be cropped prior to posting, it will be seen from the original instructions I got from a lounger ** [see below ] that the “Ctrl + C”; was missing from the sequence of moves. **
#1 No cost outlay : MS Photo Editor….Make sure you have installed the Microsoft Photo Editor – it is part of the standard Office suite and should be found under Office Tools. If you do not have it installed: Add/Remove Programs > Microsoft Office >Add or Remove Features should let you do it. Make sure Photo Editor is running then:
To grab an entire screen, press PrntScrn. Switch to PE, then Edit > Paste as New Image. To grab just the active window, press Alt + PrntScrn, then Edit > Paste as New Image. Once you have the image in PE, you can trim the image to suit. I find the easiest way is to click on the Select button, draw the rectangle around the relevant part of the graphic, [**] and again Edit > Paste as New Image. This final image can be saved as a .gif or .jpg or .png. Smaller sized pics tend to be better saved as .gif’s, saving as a .jpg allows you to set a ‘quality factor’ – usually 70% is suitable and keeps the file size down.
If I was an Ausie, I’d say “No worries mate”; but seeing I am a Brit I’ll say “No sweat”. As ever, thanks you for directing me past this small; hurdle. Dave

Edited by Big Al to reduce unneeded areas of the graphic. It isn’t only size, Dave, but appearance as well.

Thank you gentlemen, by acting on the comments you made jointly I can now report that my computer has a clean bill of health. I noticed HansV cropped my previous attachment because it had useless excess white space. I hope he does not have to do the same with the one on this post as I have – by using Microsoft Photo Editor – reduced it to 64 kb jpg which is well under the maximum of 100kb as stated. I did a search in All Programs and in the Add / Remove programs in the Control Panel but could not see it and and no I don’t recall downloading the File Recovery program but at my age i can’t guarantee anything, SORRY, it seems some of the receptors in my brain are parting company but I won’t go into that as it is without the remit of this great site. Thanks once again. Regards Dave.

Sorry Hans. Despite following the instructions you sent me to the letter the screen shot has arrived too big again, I used the cropping tool in the said program and re-saved it as directed but it seems the original screen shot was converted into the jpg. image. It appears it is back to the drawing board in this matter. Dave.

Edited by HansV to crop HUGE screenshot consisting mainly of white space.

Please can someone enlighten me regarding an intruder that Spybot S & D exposed but which, despite clicking the Immunize tab, fails to get rid of it? Please see attachment
for details. It is shown as Rognerud Research Inc. Regards Dave.

Discussing this subject with another lounger privately I had cause to refer to post 670.707 to avoid having to explain my quest all over again and noticed that I [inadvertently] had not responded on the open forum at least to Hans’s final post explaining how to refer to a previous post and make it a hyperlink. Thanks Hans, I appreciate every gesture of help you MVP’s and loungers give me as I plod on up this mountain peek in the technological range compatible with the Andes. Due to the frustration I have endured during these past weeks caused by the BackDoor.Flood virus I still have not got round to task of converting downloaded videos so as to burn them to disc but hope to (have a go) as we Brits say, in the near future. In keeping with the counsel offered by more than one lounger I will certainly make my progress known on the lounge for the benefit of any other reader who is on the same mountain- so to speak-. Regards Dave.

Nope…. not had the pleasure of any banter with John though as time permits I am open for idea / threads. I suppose the Scuttlebutt section is the place to send posts for banter other than computer issues! Recently I got an email from a niece asking me if I knew any USA web sites that her son could log on to where he could learn about USA culture as he was researching the same as part of a project he was doing for school. Here is the brief email

[Hi Uncle David, Sorry I haven’t replied sooner but it’s not very often i come on line. I need a bit of help if you can.Nathan is doing a project on America have you got any web sites were i can get information on things such as phrases, numbers. greetings etc to help him with his project. It is very much appreciated.Hope to be in touch soon Love from Lynda and family.
Maybe this is a good place for “John” to jump on the bandwagon and give me some answers that can be forwarded to my niece. Over & out. Dave.

At last I learn that we do have something in common, though I expect there must be many things colloquial that we are poles apart on. One of your very common sayings which forever seems to niggle my tolerance level in the realm of [good English] is to hear Americans say something like….. [ he fell OFF OF his bicycle. ] I know this form of speech is particularly unique to the US of A but how it came to become so I cannot imagine. Have a nice day loungers….. Cheers Dave.
