I have always been aware of look alike (phishing) emails no matter where they come from. I always type in the link instead of clicking on one. A couple of years ago my PayPal account was comprised. I was taking care of my mother at the time. (89 at the time) I didn’t have much time to check on my bank account. Never had a problem with it before. Mom didn’t have internet service. A month went by. I did check it out finally. I found two payments were taken out through PayPal. Same amount. $504 each. I checked my emails. Showed two transactions for the same amount. The account names were a bunch of letters and numbers. Both just a little different in sequence. I contacted PayPal and they investigated it. A few weeks later my bank account was credited with the full amount. I called PayPal again asking if this was a common problem with them? Dumb question? Of course it didn’t happen often they stated. What did I expect them to say. Oh yeah….we have had comprised accounts way to often?

Crucial has added their “guaranteed to fit policy” since the last time I bought from them. I ordered a larger hard drive for my mini laptop. Checked the website. Called and talked to a rep who assured me the larger drive would fit. When I tried to install it….it didn’t fit. I called Crucial and explained what I was told by their rep. She said I would then have to modify the casing. I have no repairing of computers experience. Only a laptop keyboard and ram. I bought a cheap repair kit. Soldering iron in hand…decided I was not going to be able to do the job. Called Crucial and asked for a refund of the drive and ram since I was informed it would fit. She said they would only do a credit towards other parts. I said I don’t need other parts. “Give me the name and number please of the President, CEO, Chairman of The Board, or whatever his or her title is. I will call them directly and explain my situation. She said hold on for a supervisor. I asked him the same thing. I want to speak to the “Big Dog”. The “Head Honcho”. “Can we call you right back please?” They did. And offered a full refund.

    • in reply to: How to recover data from a dead hard drive? #1317019

Looks like you may have a bad disk. Previous Windows folder sharing has nothing to do what you are experiencing.

Weird as it sounds, a friend recently had a similar issue. She solved it by putting the disk in the freezer for a while (in a waterproof bag) and she did manage to get it working long enough to recover the data (I am not joking). Whether you do this or not, I would still prefer to use the disk internally, instead of connecting it via a USB port.

I am not a techie. lol
My daughters hard drive had showed signs of slowly dying on her. I couldn’t get it to run long enough to tansfer files. It kept shutting down after only a few minutes of getting to the desktop. It is a very old drive. 40gb. I wrapped it in plastic and a zip lock freezer bag and froze it for over 2 hours. I laughed at the idea while waiting. Hooked it up and it ran long enough to get documents, music, etc onto a backup drive. And then it dies forever.

Copy them to a USB drive or CD. They will come in handy.
