      Thanks Wavy!.

      Backed up my FF 28
with FEBE version 8 , as you suggested.

The backup was quick and finished ok.
The target dir was my dropbox folder.

The latest v. 8 is available directly
      at the FEBE author’s site:
      http://softwarebychuck.com/febe/febe.html ).

      I used the FEBE Option:
backup “Both” (Addons & FF Profile).

Hope that the “Restore” (if I ever need it…),
      will also work ok.
Not going to test “Restore” now…

Anybody has done a successful “Restore with FEBE v.8?

      2)
      Separately,
      any suggestions
on also saving my Ubuntu 12.04 environment / image[/B]
      to an external HD?

      Objective:
To quickly restore my Ubuntu working environment,
in case my main HD fails…

I did use Ubuntu’s included pgm:
      DejaDup,
      but it seems to only
back up user data, files, etc,
not an image of the entire Ubuntu environment.

So, in case of restoring the HD,
      all programs and executables
would have have to be manually re-installed again,
      right?

      Any suggestions most welcome!

      Ubuntu 14.04 LTS,
( the next Long Term Stability Release),
should be available April 18, I believe, (and hope!).

      Hey!
      That’s only 10 days
after Microsoft stops its XP security updates…

      An Ubuntu Linux “LTS version”
gets longer support than a “normal non-LTS release”
      — 5 years rather than 9 months.
      Good….

      Ok…bye Microsoft!

    • thanks for those specific prog suggestions, Rag2.

      I think we are compiling
an interesting list of prog alternatives in this thread,
for those of us moving from XP to Linux (ubuntu 14.04 LTS, in my case),
      next April 8.

This is really useful to many of us…

Totally agree with you, Mkrabach! :^_^:

      btw:
      – would “Gnome Commander” work ok in Ubuntu (Unity UI) ?
      (you said Gnome Commander
      is a Gnome prog…so I’m not sure).

    • in reply to: Further to onging use of Win XP #1443850

      Great question!

Let see what this group thinks
      ref these 2 points (below),
to keep an XP box stand-alone, secure
and totally & permanently OFF the internet,
      after April 2014.

btw: we have no programs (ie: MS-Office, etc),
needing updates after April 2014 .

      In all our XP pcs,
we plan to do these 2 things:

      1) Disable Web browsing in IE & Firefox:

After support ends next April, consider reconfiguring Windows XP to block its access to the Internet. (Remember: You’ll no longer need IE or Windows Update for system updates from Microsoft).

      To do so,
      – open IE, go to Tools/Internet Options, and then click on Connections.
      – Click the LAN settings button and then check the “Use a proxy server …” box.
      – Next, enter: 0.0.0.0 into the Address box
      and 80 in Port box.
      – Finally, check the “Bypass proxy server for local addresses” box. Click OK.

      Hope somebody posts
how to do this same thing
      in the FIREFOX browser ?…

      2) Lock the Firewall Internet Connection

We happen to have the ZoneAlarm Firewall v. 7.0.483.000:
(an old but reliable version f/XP – your firewall should have similar options):

      – Open the Firewall UI to see these 2 options: STOP and LOCK.
      – Hit Ctrl-S to immediately “STOP all Internet Activity”.
      – Hit Ctrl-L to permanently “LOCK all Internet Activity” for any prgms under XP.

      Q to Group:
….Do the above 2 suggestions make sense?
      ….Any other good suggestions/options
to ISOLATE XP from the Internet ?
(ie: Cut off all IN / OUT Connections in an XP box,
      after April ’14 ?).

    • Thanks, rmallen07!

Do you know if “Midnight Commander”
      can be installed easily,
      using the “Ubuntu Software Center”?

That would be the easiest route
      for relative new Ubuntu users…

    • Thanks for the suggestions, Mike.
In my case, it will be Ubuntu 14 w/Unity.

    • in reply to: Windows XP to Windows 7 #1441311

      Anybody knows?

      – When will Windows 7 PRO
      Security Updates stop?
      April 2016, April 2017?

Win XP Security Updates stop now,
      on April 2014
…XP-PRO becomes an unusuable, insecure OS.

    • in reply to: Turmoil at Microsoft; implications for Windows users #1441307

      Thanks
      for that factual post, Woody!

      I’ve been an MS User
(and reader of your great columns),
      since the days of DOS…so,
I’m also an experienced MS User.

      My opinion?

      The new MS team
might be brilliant and have the best intentions.

But in the last 10 years,
Microsoft has shown a lack of perception and respect
      of what OS ***Users***
      really need and want.

      For example:
dropping approx. 750 million Users of Win XP (a perfectly functional OS),
      “under the bus”.

(including the entire UK National Health System PCs,
and also a billion ATM machines…).

      To those who say:
      – “But…but…just buy new hardware and Win 8,
because XP is old and not secure anymore!….”

      I say:
      – “Well, then MAKE IT SECURE and modern
…don’t just drop a billion paying XP Users!”.

As mentioned in my previous comments,
      our small company
has been preparing for a year now,
and moving to Linux Ubuntu and Mint, next April…

We have no time for MS politics and incompetence,
      and “future” OSes from them.

      As ***paying Users***,
we have completely lost our confidence
      in Microsoft Corp.

      No more time to wait
for MS to “get their house in order”.
There are better OS alternatives, now.

And that’s a fact and my opinion

      @Bben46:

Yes, we are having the same Win Update problem
      with our XP-Pro 32 pcs.

      We are going (gradually),
through the same migration process as Bben46 is,
      w/several XP-SP3 PCs.
(XP to Linux Ubuntu, in our case).

      Isn’t Linux great?
Our applications are working well for us,
      no problems.

Question : to Bben46 or anyone?
      ————
How did you (easily) transfer your **Bookmarks** & FF Settings
      from: Firefox XP
      to: Firefox under Linux?

We are planning to use “Xmarks” to do this transfer.
Xmarks, which saves your bookmarks to the Cloud,
      was bought by LastPass.

Yet, some people report that although Xmarks
does Save bookmarks to the Cloud fine,
it then fails later to Restore/Transfer back the bookmarks
to another browser, (ie: FF under Linux),
      – when that restoring is needed.

      Anybody have any experience lately
      with Xmarks _restoring_ bookmarks?

      @ Satrow
      Yes, I agree with you.
McAfee reports should be banned from VirusTotal…

I suspect McAfee has its own “agenda”.
Labeling that web site as: HIJACKED ,
when and if it is not – is highly irresponsible.

But the 2nd link you included in your post (Google Web Site Checker),
      it reports:

      “Has this site hosted malware?
Yes, this site has hosted malicious software over the past 90 days. It infected 0 domain(s), including… “. (???)

      Check it out…

    • in reply to: CryptoLocker: A particularly pernicious virus #1418690

      Just a quick heads-up:

      I just checked the file:
      CryptoPrevent.ZIP with “Virus Total”.

      Seems clean at first,
BUT the SUCURI Web Site Check,
(see the “Additional Information” Tab of “Virus Total”),
lists the author site of CryptoPrevent.ZIP (“foolishit.com”),
      as: possibly HIJACKED.

Here’s the SUCURI Link with the report:
      http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/www.foolishit.com

      Could be a false positive,
but I wouldn’t be surprised if the baddies
are already targeting the author’s site
offering this apparently free & easy, preventive utility.

So…I’m not installing this utility yet …wish I could.
      Any other opinions on this?
