    • Petesmst: Try opening control panel – default program – set default programs and find the program you want to use to open .pdfs (most likely Acrobat or Nitro), then click Set this program as default as mentioned before. This will set the .pdf’s to open in the program. The problem is with Edge itself I believe. If you have another browser like Chrome installed, in that same control panel app, find the Chrome (or other) browser and click Set this program as default. That way, Edge is not considered the default browser any longer and can’t change the settings. Anyway this worked for me on my upgrade!

    • in reply to: How to split screen into two separate displays? #1537977

Any idea how to split a display screen into 2 separate displays. I do know how to show 2 separate programs, ie excel and word, at the same time… What I would like to do is to display a web site, while at the same time show a rotating display, such as a powerpoint screenshow. Unfortunately when you turn on screenshow, ppt takes over the whole screen. How do I get it to only take part of the screen, or are there other programs that would allow me to run another display, such as a ticker tape with news items while also showing the web site…?

      Thanks

In PowerPoint, go to Tab Slide Show – Set Up Slide Show – Show Type – Unclick Presented by a speaker(full screen) and click Browsed by an individual(window), then click OK. I think that will be able to do what you want it to.

After reading the responses, something I have found wasn’t discussed. If you buy a 64 bit system to get more RAM, some older programs that ran in Win 98 or before will not run on 64 bit systems. If you find you have programs you have used in the past that won’t run even in compatability mode on a 64 bit system, you can use Oracle’s free Virtual Box to setup a virtual hard drive, load your old operating system on it and then run your old programs from within the Virtual Box. With the big hard drives these days, the Virtual Box doesn’t really cause any problems. I gave mine 60 gig of hard space for use with no problems.

I use Opera browser with the Unite feature enabled. You have to use a version previous to Version 12 browser since they are not developing these tools any longer. However it works great. I use the file share feature that lets you set aside a portion of your disk space as a file server folder. You can put your video in the folder and there is a weblink for the folder. You just email the weblink to your friend and he can download the video. There is also an upload app, picture share app, and personal webserver app. I have used these applications for three years at my business and have never had any problems. It does require a quick setup in Opera to identify you as an Opera user but it’s pretty easy.

    • I’m running Win 8 32 Bit.

Some times system restore takes a while to start. Click on it from your start menu and then wait…. If you can get it to start and restore to a date previous to the date you deleted the profile, it should restore everything to where it was. Then you can go into your FireFox profile and change the location of your download file to point away from the desktop. Maybe you can create a new empty file and point to that. Then it would probably be safe to delete your FireFox profile. It sounds like you may have deleted a Windows Profile instead of the FireFox browser profile.

I’ve been using Opera for more than 8 years. I started because of the tabbed browsing and the speed. Since other browsers have caught up and added tabbed browsing, I stay with Opera because of the newer features. I love the RSS Feeds interface and a feature I’m using more and more is Opera Unite where I can share a folder on my computer with my members by sending them a link, similar to Drop Box or You Send It all through my browser. Opera reportedly has had fewer security problems than some other browsers. And the mouse gestures are really cool.
