The problem is not whether you plan to upgrade to Windows 7. It would be other programs that use .NET. However, you can uninstall it if you wish.

NOTE: On an XP Pro system I have access to the Framework files for .NET 1.0,1.1,2.0,3.0,3.5 + all service packs take up about 230MB. That is less than .2 % (yes, two-tenths of one percent) of a 140GB drive. IMO, it is not worth the effort to worry about it.

If you are that short of disk space you should consider adding more to the system either with an internal or external drive.

ok thanks for all your help wont be worrying then

Many people have upgraded some of their programs and have found that the new versions now REQUIRE “.Net” and have never installed it and/or have blocked the useage of it. Then they can not get the new version of the program that they have been using for years, installed.

hi i have a an HP Pavilion a1650e and have no thoughts of ever converting to windows 7 on it only have a 140gig “C” drive so this is taking up alot of uneccassary space can i remove it and and download the 2.0 net frame work

    • in reply to: net framework 3.5 #1185889

Unless you are desparate for disk space leave the .NET installations alone. Uninstalling .NET is often not a clean process. Frequently there seem to be “pieces” left behind that cause problems later. Additionally, if you install a program that requires a higher version of .NET you’ll just have to reinstall.

thanks very much for your help

See the discussion beginning with this post – it is not that simple!

Ii was having no problems running at v1.1 but i needed to uninstall windows live messenger and reinstall so I used the zap messenger tool . It said to use zap messenger you needed at least v2.0 but I downloaded the 3.5 because that is where their website took me to. But I was succesful in uninstalling the windows live messenger with their tool and reinstalling it back from the microsoft website. Now I dont think i need v3.5 but v2.0 will suffice.

Yes, IE7 should automatically come back.

See How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8? for details.

      thank you very much

    • in reply to: microsoft security essentials #1179847

According to Security Essentials System Requirements, it runs on Genuine (i.e. legitimate) Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3). This includes Media Center Edition.
You need to have a PC with a CPU clock speed of 500 MHz or higher, and 1 GB RAM or higher, and 140 MB of available hard disk space.

thank you very much you’ve been a great help

    • in reply to: deletion of microsoft office works #1161350

Documents won’t be affected, nor will your personal settings for Word.

just one more question and I thank you for all your help
What is a repair install ? I’m not familiar with that? Do I have to reinstall Office 2000? And how do you do a repair if neccassary?

    • in reply to: deletion of microsoft office works #1161348

As far as I know, you should be able to uninstall MS Works through the Add or Remove Programs control panel.

You may have to perform a repair install of Office 2000 after uninstalling MS Works because Works and Office share some components.

If I have word documents on the microsoft word portion of Office 2000 will I lose them if I delete the works program ? And what is the best way to save them

I’m a bit confused. Are you saying tha you have your backups stored on the D drive ??? Is the infection being found inside a backup ???

Or are you talking about the Restore points for the System Restore utility ???

Not talking about the system restore utitlity that parts of system applications. My computer has a c drive and a d drive. The d drive is the HP recovery drive so if the c drive crashes and an go back and start again. I guess it is a system restore drive. My backups are on on remote cd roms. the message is coming from the d drive…

You can safely remove it but it’ll probably come back with the next update…

      Thank you for your help

You didn’t answer my question. Remote troubleshooting is difficult enough, so please stay on topic.

If you feel it is something to do with a Windows update, then perhaps a System Restore to a time before the update in question might fix the problem. Do you know how long you have had the problem and what updates were applied when it began ??

i think it ocurred right after KB967715 was downloaded however my system restore function has not worked for at least the last 7 months so that might be difficult to go back and restore to an earlier date

    • in reply to: XP Changes #1153931

Does the drive show up when there is no CD in it ??

Somehow windows changed a little. 2 things actually changed. One thing is the not recognizing of a CD when load a blank CD in “E” slot only when you right click and open the box and the other item is when I go to My Computer and click on the icon for example the “c” drive it opens to a search results window as opposed to opening the contents of the drive. It never used to do this. It usually opened to the contents of the drive. Now I have to right click on the drive and go to the open option. I think one of the updates caused this this to happen. Any feedback would be welcomed and thanks for your help
