I have a long text chart (about 100 pages; no math) with several columns created by someone else. When printed, all cell lines are visible. I would like to increase the amount of white space at the top and bottom of each cell (i.e., more space above the first line of each cell and below the last line of each cell). I have looked through the Excel Help screens and my Excel manual, but I haven’t discovered how to do this.

I’ve created lots of charts like this in Word, and it’s easy to increase the inner cell margins there. It seems like Excel must have a way to do this. Can someone help?

    • in reply to: Word 2003 – Need something like STYLEREF #1195527

That’s a good idea, Pam. Funny you should mention it–the attorney just emailed me today asking if the document would be easier to read in a table! (When I create documents of that sort myself, I usually use a table.)

      Gary,

You had the right idea, but unfortunately, there’s a complicating factor in my document. I just did a little testing using your suggestion, and here’s the snag: When, for example, the heading “2002” begins on page 2 with several entries underneath, and then page 3 continues with several additional 2002 entries, and then part-way down page 3 a new heading “2003” begins, that “2003” heading is what is captured in the STYLEREF command at the top of page 3 (since it’s the first occurrence of that heading style on the page). I need it to say “2002” at the top of page 3 since 2002 is still in effect when page 3 begins.

I think I’m just going to use continuous section breaks, which will give me multiple headers that I can fix exactly like I need.

But thanks for your idea. I learned something new from it.

Just in case your profile folders are partially hidden, you may need to tick the box for searching hidden files and folders. You can also turn off file hiding in Windows Explorer or My Computer (Tools>Folder Options>View tab). Well, assuming this is allowed in your environment.

Thanks–I didn’t know about the option of having hidden files included in the search. It worked.

Any chance you made a backup?

Our law firm makes regular backups, so I can probably get it from there. Can you tell me why my Search of the C: drive for Normal.dot doesn’t find it?

Try the steps in Phil Rabichow’s [post=”197827″]Systematic Approach to behavioral Problems in Word[/post] to see if you can find the cause of the misbehavior.

I was going through Phil’s troubleshooting routine and I think I deleted my macros. I was on Phil’s SECOND STEP and had started Word with “winword.exe /a”. I then created a test toolbar and saved Normal.dot since the point of troubleshooting was to determine why I couldn’t delete a toolbar once I had created it and resaved Normal.dot. But I think that by doing that save, I lost any macros I had in Normal.dot.

I checked the Recycle Bin to see if the old Normal.dot was there, but it wasn’t. Is there any way to get back the Normal.dot that was overwritten?

By the way, I did a search for Normal.dot on my C: drive and nothing was found. Phil’s #3 under SECOND STEP implies that I should have found it. I have my preferences set to display all hidden files. What did I do wrong there?

    • Jefferson, I had already tried going through VB without luck. Thanks for the thought.

But pingdat, you got it! Thanks.

It might be easier to create a custom toolbar in her Normal.dot and copy the buttons from the Formatting toolbar that she wants to the custom toolbar.
The custom toolbar is less likely to be affected by add-ins.

Good idea, Hans. I’ll try it. Thanks.
