Phil, we’re on a network here in the office. Will that still work? –Russ

Phil, I think she already tried that, but I’ll pass it along. Thanks. –Russ

Diane, I don’t know if this is what’s occurring in your case, but here it is for what it’s worth:

Occasionally, when I want to restart the numbering of an outline-numbered paragraph, I’ll go into Bullets and Numbering and find that Restart Numbering and Continue Previous List are grayed out. At first I didn’t know what was going on, and then I noticed that the numbering scheme of the current paragraph was not the numbering scheme that was highlighted in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (I don’t know why–that shouldn’t happen). So I clicked on the numbering scheme I was using, and Restart Numbering and Continue Previous List suddenly ungrayed and I was able to continue.

Again, I don’t know if this is what’s going on in your case, but it does happen.

Thanks, Mike. As I said to Gerry, I’ll try it when I get a moment. Too much work here today! —Russ

Thank you, Gerry. I’ll try that when I get a chance. (It’s been a very busy day–no time!) —Russ

      Right, thanks.

By the way, I noticed something odd in deleting a row with the method you mentioned (selecting the row and cutting with Ctrl-X). It works okay when I select the row with the mouse, but when I select the row with the keyboard, the only thing that deletes is the contents of the row, not the structure. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you, John. It worked and helped save me tonight. Our firm does almost no Excel work, so none of us knows how to use it. Someone found a small Excel manual, so between it and the answers here, I’m getting through it.

Thanks, Andrew. I’m a total novice with Excel and I have to convert a large chart with several columns of text from MS Word to Excel. Someone here in the office found a small Excel manual, so at least I have a little help. It’s really the kind of thing that works best in Word, but the client wants it in Excel, so guess who’s “right”?

Wow, Hans, you work fast. Thank you so much for actually fixing the document. I’ll have to look at it more on Sunday (my next work day) so I can get more comfortable with the feature. I’ve got to get out of here (the office) now. Thanks for such quick turnaround.

Phil, turning off design view did the trick. Thanks.

Well, Hans, I finally had time to get back to my form. Unfortunately, the “lock” icon on the Forms toolbar is grayed out. Likewise for the “Protect Document” option under Tools.

My first thought was that because I’m on a network, maybe the system administrator has turned off these options. But then when I went to a new blank screen to test your instructions, the “lock” icon and “Protect Document” option were available. I tried your instructions and it all worked like you said. What puzzles me is, what is it about the form I created that caused those options to be grayed out?

Forgive me for being presumptuous, but I’ve attached the form I created for you to look at. Please don’t feel obligated if you don’t have the time, but if you do, would you mind checking the document to see if you see anything that might be the cause of the graying out of those options? Thanks.

    • in reply to: Impossible outline numbering scheme? (Word 2000) #622285

Thanks, Andrew. I looked at the other thread. It’s interesting how several respondents misunderstood the actual levels of numbering Katie-Lynn was asking about. I’ve had the same problem here at the office. I emailed one of our systems people about this and she said, Oh, sure, I know how to do that. But when she showed me her solution, she had the first level as Arabic instead of Roman numbering.

Wow, you’re quite a regular here! You’ve helped me before. Don’t know if I mentioned it at that time, but I was in Melbourne in 1974. I was a trumpet player touring with a brass quintet and we gave concerts in several cities in Australia. Of all the halls we played in on that trip, Melbourne was my favorite. It was an old auditorium that had a lot of wood in it and had some of the greatest acoustics I’ve ever heard. As I recall, there was at least one balcony, maybe two. I remember having to look mostly up to see the audience. The audiences in Australia were fantastic. Very warm reception to us guys from the States.

      Thanks for helping me again.

Wow, Klaus, thanks. I can’t believe I forgot about the Text Box toolbar that appears when you’re in a Text Box. It was in among all the other toolbars at the top of my screen and kind of got lost. And I’ve never used the Format > Text Direction. Thanks for bailing me out.
