Thanks. Have you seen this before?

    • Jefferson, your suggestion was a big help. I recorded a Replace All macro with another character (“r”), opened the macro editor and replaced the “r” (including the quote marks) with “chrw(-557)” (without the quote marks). I then ran the macro, which found and deleted the box. Interestingly, when I opened the Find dialog box, that box character was still in the Find string, left over from running the macro. And sure enough, I did a Find Next and it found the box. Thanks.

One additional thing I just discovered. After running the macro that deleted the box, I did an Undo to get the box back. But instead of the box reappearing, a non-breaking hyphen appeared in its place. I guess that tells us something, but I’m not sure what.

By the way, how do you bold something in our posts here in Woody’s Lounge? I tried Ctrl-B, but it didn’t work.

    • Wow, Hans, you are quick. Thanks again.

      Thank you, Hans.

Thanks, Andrew and Hans. Nice idea with the 2-column-table. I’m not very well-acquainted with Fields. How would you make it work using them?

    • Thanks, guys. When I get to work today, I’ll fiddle with some of what you mentioned.

Andrew, I have Word 98 on a Mac here at home and the box won’t copy into the Find string on it either. Odd that you can do it in Word 97.

    • Andrew,

Unfortunately, those boxes won’t copy into the Find string. That’s why I needed an alternate solution. I thought we had found the cure-all in your macro, but I guess it doesn’t always apply. Thanks for getting back. –Russ

    • Andrew, you helped me with this problem two months ago, but I can’t figure out how to make your solution work on this latest occurrence.

I’ve attached a 3-line document that has a box in it (before the word “impair”). I used the macro you gave me to identify its Ascii value (63) and Unicode value (-557), but I don’t know what to do with those values. I tried searching to ^63 and -557, but no luck. What am I doing wrong? confused

Thanks. I’ll pass this along to our systems department.

Our systems department says there have been no problems so far with the 4+ driver. Thanks for the tip about the Beta driver. I’ll let our people know.

      [20 minutes later]
I just mentioned the Beta driver to our systems department and they’re wondering if there’s a name or more specifics you can give us so we can get it too. Thanks.

I just had this very problem last night (and have had it before) (in Word 2000). In fact, I posted last night under the title “Bottom of page cut off” (or something like that). It’s quite variable as you say, sometimes working and sometimes not. Last night, at first it displayed in Print Preview as being cut off and also printed that way. Then it printed fine but continued to display cut off in Print Preview. Finally, when I came in today and looked at the document, it was fine in Print Preview and printed fine. So it changes from moment to moment.

I talked to one of our systems people here at my firm and she said several people have had printer driver problems (but not this specific problem that you and I had). Normally, we use HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6, but that has caused some people (but not all) problems. Our systems department has tried several drivers, including PCL 5, but the best one they’ve found is HP LaserJet 4+ on a print server. That driver has solved all problems so far. She just changed me to that driver today.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

When I took a look at the document in Print Preview today, it was suddenly fine. I just spoke to one of our systems people here at my firm about it and she said several of our people have had printer driver errors lately (although not this exact problem I had). The driver I have is HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6. She said she’s been changing the driver to HP LaserJet 4+ on a print server and so far it’s fixed all the problems. (She just changed me to that today.)

      Thanks, Jefferson.

Hi, curious. Yes, I tried messing with the bottom margin, but it didn’t help. Thanks for answering.

      Jefferson, Hans and Phil,

I finally had a chance to try a few things today based on your comments. I apologize again for the delay. We’ve been inundated with work for several days. So in case you haven’t entirely lost interest, here are some results:

First, Jefferson, the lock button on the Forms toolbar was grayed-out as was everything on both the Control Box toolbar and the Forms toolbar, so I could not enable or disable anything.

Next, just out of curiosity, I tried saving the document directly from the attachment on my original post. Surprisingly, the lock button on the Forms toolbar was no longer grayed-out, so I could unlock the document. (By the way, my macro security level was set to High.)

Then, Hans, I tested your idea that my High security level might have been the cause of everything being grayed-out on the original problem document. I reset the security level to Medium, then retrieved that original problem document. Sure enough, the lock button on the Forms toolbar was not grayed-out, so I could unlock the document.

My theory is that the reason I had the original problem was that I locked the document, then saved and closed it. I say this because I made other copies of the document as backups before I locked, saved and closed it, and none of them had this problem. My macro security level was set to High during all of this.

I’m a beginner when it comes to macros, so your discussion of them was beyond me.

Thanks to all of you for your help. Each of you has helped me numerous times in the past and I appreciate it.

Guys – it’s now Sunday, but we were swamped all day again. I’ll respond first chance I get. Sorry.
