Thanks for the reply, I’m presuming it’s likely flakey hardware. It didn’t appear to be dusty, etc. inside – I had the case open to change the video card and also changed the CD drive as the original was making some funny noises and gave me a CDR101 error the first time I tried to load Win98. Internet research indicated this to be a hardware issue, cable connections, etc. Funny that it couldn’t find the CD to load Windows however changing to E and doing a “dir” listed the CD’s directory. Anyway, I had another CD drive that I knew worked so I swapped it out before I started.

      Thanks, Alan

Your alternative is obviously the easiest so will get that program for future use should I have to go this route again.

I just downloaded and installed AVG Free on Saturday after reformatting my hard drive. Something hiccuped on first install as I got a blue screen when it tried to reboot. So I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled again. Second time went perfect and so far appears to be working well. Sunday morning I checked my office email and it nailed a virus in the first one. It was a suspicious spam anyway so I would never have touched the attachment. It takes slightly longer to get my emails now as it visably checks them before letting me at them but that’s a good thing, right? My old antivirus program just grabbed viruses if I tried to open the attachment.

Maybe it does in XP (I’ll have to try it at work next week) but doesn’t do that in 98. Here’s a shot of what I have in attributes for the top level folder showing the read only checked. When I uncheck it and click OK the properties dialog box closes without any further message and the attibute is changed on only that folder, not any files. Maybe 98 didn’t have that ability???

Thanks, Stuart and Hans, for the ATTRIB tip (and the quick replies.) I’ll make a note of that for next time.

Stuart, how do you remove the Read Only from the whole tree in Windows Explorer? Sounds easier than the ATTRIB but I thought of that first and right clicked the top level folder, selected properties and unchecked the read only, however that changed only the folder, not any of the files under it. Did I miss something here?

Thanks, I knew it had to be something simple I was missing.

Just saw your posting and had a look at The Great Software List. I found one program that looked interesting so far in their Internet section … 1st Page 2000 HTML/CSS Editor.

My experience here is a good reminder to anyone downloading programs to be sure their antivirus is up-to-date. The download was a zipped file and when I unzipped, my antivirus promptly caught and quarantined a “JS.WindowBomb” virus that was in the program! (Naturally I notified both sites about this.)

Thanks for the tip. This happened again a couple of days ago … first time since my post. Your suggestion worked perfectly. Clicking the mouse wheel got everything running fine again.
