AskWoody LoungerThere is an On Screen Display (it’s showing the default in this picture). I tried as indicated above to move it over to the right but it didn’t have enough adjustment to pull it all back on screen. These are intended for small adjustments.
40258-OSDThe 1440x 900 was the native (recommended) resolution for this monitor which is what it always had been set at until this problem today after which I changed it to 1280×1024 so I could use it. The distortion is only a problem because I’m temporarily (hopefully) using it at this resolution which is not correct for the monitor. If I can get the 1440×900 to properly appear full screen again, the image will be fine.

AskWoody LoungerI don’t know if this is of any help but I’ve used FrontPage for years (first 2000, then 2003) to build and maintain my personal web site. I love it because it’s so simple to use – unfortunately I could never use the “extensions” because my free web space didn’t support that. However I’ve never used its publishing feature. I’ve always preferred to use a separate FTP uploader to move my pages to my web site – very quick and easy. If you are able to access your site through a third party FTP program, you might want to try that route. You upload one page at a time directly to the web site directory where you want to put it. So anytime you revise a page, only necessary to upload that page replacing the previous page. The FTP program I use is WS_FTP_LE which was a free program long ago discontinued but extremely easy to use. A Google search shows some free ones available.

AskWoody LoungerI would add to have off-site backups. Two businesses here burned to the ground a while back. Fortunately, their backups were elsewhere.
My backup experience may be a little outdated by now but it still works quite well. We have three network programs that we use every day (including our accounting software) all with main data files on the server and there is a main “user” folder where all important corporate files are stored and separate sub-folders for each user for their own important files. I have two external portable hard drives – one is marked “odd numbered days” and the other “even numbered days”. Depending on the date on the calendar one of these drives is attached to the server each weekday night. Our IT support person wrote a simple batch file and each weekday night just before midnight, the task scheduler runs the batch file and copies everything from the user folder and the network program data files onto the external drive. The external drive has five folders – one for each weekday – so if it is tomorrow night (March 3) the “odd numbered days” drive would be attached and the files are copied into the Monday folder overwriting anything that was in that folder. The next day on Tuesday, I attach the “even numbered days” drive and everything is copied into the Tuesday folder. Alternating back and forth I then have two weeks worth of backups available in case something happened. And the drive not being used goes home with me every night so the latest backup is always off site. And being an accountant (and maybe a little paranoid too), the last thing I do every day before logging off the network is to copy the accounting data file from the server onto my own computer so there are two backup copies of that one since it would be the most important file we would have.
Fortunately it’s been a good number of years since I actually had to restore anything important. And that leads me to make another point. Always periodically check that your backup actually is working and that you can restore a file if necessary. A good idea there would be to make a temporary duplicate copy of some important files, let them back up, then delete the duplicates and restore from the backup. Easy way to confirm everything is working properly without messing with the real files. I changed a password to the server once not realizing that I also had to put the same password change on the task scheduler so for a couple of weeks the back up had not been working and I didn’t know it until I checked the backup drive and the file dates were not current.
(To digress just a bit, some years ago before our current dedicated server and external backups were installed, we outgrew our small server with tape backup and our IT consultant at the time suggested something called a SnapServer [see Wikipedia] which was basically just a box with a hard drive and minimal software plugged into the network as a file server. We installed it and were still looking for a backup system to use with it … tape didn’t have enough capacity or took forever to run a backup … and one morning about three weeks after it was installed the hard drive in it started making funny noises. Yeah, you guessed where this is going … the hard drive was toast and our last backup was three weeks out of date … except for the accounting data file which was copied onto my computer! We promptly got rid of that box and got a new IT support person and installed a proper server and the portable drives … significantly more money at the time … but it has worked well ever since.)
Oh yes, one more point before I close. Our server also has mirrored hard drives. So if a drive crashes (been there), the data is safe on the second drive.
Our network is getting rather old now and we’re having our complete IT system re-evaluated next week.

AskWoody LoungerIf you want to see if you’re on a blacklist, go to whatismyip.com, note your IP address showing, and then select Blacklist Check from the top menu. Enter your IP in the box if it is not already there and click the Check Blacklists button. In a few seconds you’ll see if you’re on any of these blacklist sites. Interestingly enough I’m showing on two sites … although I don’t have any problems sending emails. Apparently however some spammer(s) had recently been spoofing my email address as I was getting a lot of bounce backs on spam messages that hadn’t been sent from me. That probably caused these listings.
About a year or so ago, we had an incident at work where we were not able to send outgoing email and when I contacted our ISP, I was told that our ISP wasn’t blocking our outgoing email but that we were on a black list apparently resulting from some malware or something that actually had sent spam from our network. When I attempted to track down the offending computer on our network, to my chagrin I found it was me! One of the blacklist sites (forgotten which) allowed me to view the offending email and turns out I had infected my computer by opening an email attachment but in my defense it did appear to be a legitimate attachment from a well known freight company. I’m normally careful with email attachments but this was a good one that was hard to spot. Anyway, antivirus/malware programs didn’t catch it and eventually had to roll back my computer to a date before I’d received the email to get rid of it. The ISP advised I had to notify the various blacklist sites that the problem was resolved to get off their blacklists. Some would drop us off the list immediately (with the warning that we would be back on if the problem persisted) and others took a few days of no spam activity before we were dropped off. It took nearly a week before the last blacklist dropped us. Fortunately our email service was back up before that time.
Anyway this story is probably irrelevant to your situation other than to check the black list sites but is a good warning to others about how much trouble one little mistake can cause. My little “indiscretion” with that attachment had shut down outgoing email for our whole company for a couple of days!

AskWoody LoungerDecember 19, 2013 at 5:52 pm in reply to: Looking at replacement for GoDaddy email with same domain usage #1430207Hi All:
Apparently GoDaddy email has had numerous problems …
I echo the problems with GoDaddy’s email service. We’ve been using GoDaddy to host our business web site and email service for the past year and for the past couple months I’ve been getting complaints from various staff about not receiving emails. I’ve only recently been able to prove it. I have an old business email account with our local ISP and have it auto forwarding to my current account. I’ve had a couple of regular senders send their messages to both addresses. All were getting to the old address but some were not arriving at the new address and some were not auto forwarding although the ISP says they left their server. GoDaddy’s forum shows numerous people with same problem and none appeared to be getting any satisfaction from GoDaddy. Our solution is to move our web hosting and email service from GoDaddy to our local ISP. Starting the process for that now. Our domain is registered elsewhere so once everything is set up with the ISP, we just have to arrange for the DNS pointing to the right place. Local hosting will cost a little more but still not bad for a business but at least there’s some peace of mind that if there is a problem, we have someone local to complain to!

AskWoody LoungerJust cleaning up some old emails and noticed I never came back to this post. I have no idea what happened but not too long after the above posts, the problem disappeared. I’ve since moved up to IE 10 and have a couple of other small problems that I won’t go into and I have a suspicion of where they came from. They’re minor irritants and don’t have time to bother to try to fix now.

AskWoody LoungerThis won’t help you with the current question, hodget, but might be useful info FOR CANADIANS. I have been getting the FREE income software to do my taxes for 3 or 4 years from http://www.studiotax.com and as a retired tax-man, you can take my word for it that it is VERY GOOD. And totally free. I’m not aware of a U.S. version.
I echo StickMaker for any Canadians. I’ve also been using StudioTax for years and it’s very easy to use and easy to file electronically. I can’t understand why people would pay money for tax software for individuals when good software is available for free. Canada Revenue Agency lists various approved software here – The “More details” links will tell you if there is a cost.

AskWoody LoungerBruce,
It just happened again so I tried your suggestion of opening IE9 from System Tools and it opened from there … still wouldn’t open normally. So wondering if maybe there’s something in the Add Ins that could be the culprit. I’ve taken some screen grabs of the list of Add Ins and posted that as a PDF here. The only Add In that looked odd to me was the “IB Updater” (Bit Cocktail) so I Googled “IB Updater” and found references to “IncrediBar” which apparently is a toolbar by Perion – I do use IncrediMail (a Perion product) but don’t see any tool bar like that on my computer. So then searched on “Bit Cocktail” and found this web siteand I have a program called CyberLink MediaEspresso which came with my computer (I haven’t figured out what it’s good for) so presuming it has something to do with that. When I open MediaEspresso I get a popup box asking me to download an update so presuming that’s the Updater. So don’t know if I’m just looking at a red herring here or what.
What caused it this time was simply clicking on the Windows Secrets thread link in my email (from your response) and got the crash when IE tried to open from that link. As I said, the crash is not consistent so it’s impossible to reproduce it to isolate the source.

AskWoody LoungerBruce,
Adobe Flash Player is 11.5.502.35.
Next time it happens, I’ll try opening IE9 from System Tools and see what happens.Rod

AskWoody LoungerBeing rather cheap myself, I’ve tried both refill kits and cheap remanufactured cartridges. Learned my lesson – gone back to printer manufacturer’s cartridges. The refill kits turned out to be messy and very difficult to properly fill the cartridges – and after filling a couple of times they often wouldn’t work properly anyway. Plus had some problems with leaking a bit of ink into my printer. Then I found a supplier here in Canada with remanufacturered cartridges for about $10 each (color or black) – package indicates they come from China (doesn’t everything?). Price was great – I bought a few to get the free shipping. First one worked fine, second color one wouldn’t print yellow, third one wouldn’t print blue. Black one printed with parts of lines missing (like needed cleaning but cleaning didn’t help.) Threw them out – not worth sending back to supplier – and put in new brand name cartridges and they worked perfectly.
I did find that the local Wal-Mart had them significantly cheaper than the local electronics store or office supply store althought the selection was limited. So you might want to look there if you have a Wal-Mart nearby.
I used to be able to find other reputable third-party cartridges in our stores but they now seem to carry only printer brand names. I see Ko-Rec-Type’s web site says they still sell ink cartridges. I’d used some a few years back and they were fine and less expensive but I don’t see them in our stores now.

AskWoody LoungerThanks, Joe
Ran Revo today as you suggested, then reinstalled latest Java and everything now is working fine. This Revo is definitely a keeper in my “toolbox”. Might need it again sometime.

Thanks for the reply – I forgot to mention that I’d also tried using JavaRa to remove Java (saw that somewhere when I Googled my problem) and that didn’t do squat.
Anyway I downloaded Revo Uninstaller and started to use it until I got to the screen showing a large number of registry items and got nervous so I cancelled out pending some more advice. Here is a PDF of screen shots showing the steps as I went through it.
Just wanted to confirm if I am supposed to delete all the bolded items? There are a lot of them. I looked at a few of the bold items and some clearly mentioned Java and some others didn’t mention Java by name. So I wasn’t sure what I should do at that point.

AskWoody LoungerIf you are using Windows 7 or Vista you can use Snipimage…
However since this is a Win XP forum you wouldn’t have Snipimage but I’ve found that Snippy (found here) is a great add on for XP … I use it all the time for bits of screen captures. It’s pretty much the same as the snip program I have in my Vista at home.

AskWoody LoungerThis is an old thread by now but thought I’d just put a final update on it. I haven’t needed to make any DVD’s longer than 60 minutes for some time now but have a pack of dual-layer blanks in case it comes up. The pixellation problem seemed to go away sometime after the earlier posts and I’m pretty much convinced most of the problem with the Sanyo player not the DVD’s themselves. It eventually quit altogether recently – kept saying no disk when there was a disk in it – so it’s been replaced with a new Toshiba and it works fine.

AskWoody LoungerMost likely it is a problem with the code generated by FrontPage. Have you tried IE’s compatibility mode (I assume IE9 still have compatibility mode…)?
Those users with IE9 had rolled back to IE8 which solved the problem temporarily so I ignored it until now. We just added a new computer which has IE9 so I played around with it some more. The compatibility mode in IE didn’t do anything (and there’s no compatibility mode in FireFox or Opera where I also tested it.) Turns out when I eventually found the problem, it was the FrontPage theme I was using. One page displayed fine which was in a different theme. When I experimented with the themes I found that about half of them were not compatible with IE9 (regular black text appeared transparent) but the rest of the themes were fine. So I ended up changing the Intranet pages to a different theme that was compatible.
