    • in reply to: PDF to Word – any reliable products? #1277364

I’ve just updated Nitro Pro with its OCR (money) anyway it makes the BMP image easily and is supposed to convert to Word Text file; (only learning) however i managed to copy text in whole PDF ok, when pasted into Word .doc needs sorting as all formatting has been stripped but is otherwise ok, just got 17 pages into .doc with so can be done

    • Oh hang on…I’ve a Toshiba Laptop to. I didn’t get Vista program disk with my computer, Toshiba has a hidden partition called “O” which contains all system files including the Vista program files. In light of that may I suggest if you haven’t already got one, make a recovery disk, which will re-installs your laptop back to factory defaults, I’m not suggesting you run that yet, but insure you have one.
You might also like to look for the C:TOSAPINS folder, in that is a number of programs including Toshiba Assist, which preforms maintenance on your system.
Also in Tosapins you will find Toshiba Hardware Setup Wizard…
Back up all important files onto an external drive or drag or copy/paste onto a CD or DVD…
Try as suggested above running System Restore.
You can download and trial a copy Kaspersky Internet Security Services for free, and get it to scan your computer, to do that you you would need to disable Norton. You cannot completely un-install norton, trying will corrupt your system files, but you can disable it.

    • in reply to: System Image How Often #1276525

I backed up with True Image Home 2009 for quite a while, recently purchased True Image Home 2011. One Image being saved every Sunny Sunday morning makes a series (chain like) set of back up’s, after few months its dropping one off the end, there help information follows:
“Incremental” – These are most useful when you need frequent backups and the ability to roll back to a specific point in time. Having created a full backup once, if you then create an incremental backup each day of a month, you will get the same result as if you created full backups every day. Incremental images are considerably smaller than full or differential images.
Such a backup scenario may consist of a weekly full system backup with intermediate, daily backups that cover data that was changed since the LAST backup.
This scenario, while requiring less storage space and time for the daily backups, will require more work on your part to provide recovery after a system crash. In the event of a Thursday crash, you would have to recover the last FULL backup followed by the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday incremental backups.
“Differential” – is an intermediate between the first two approaches. It is also good when the conditions are intermediate. Each differential backup includes all the files changed since the last full backup. It takes less time and space than “Full”, but more than “Incremental”. The good thing is that recovering is simpler than for (2) – you’ll have to recover the last full backup and the last differential backup.

And have just purchased an additional USB drive to configure a Laplink DiskImage backup to.

    • in reply to: Firefox 4 release announced #1275054

I’d made an image with True Image Home prior installing FireFox version four, so just used that to get back to where i was. Another two plug-ins that were disabled by version was Kaspersky’s so i’m sticking the to firefox version 3

      Hi robplum

I switched from Roboform to Lastpass about 1-2 years ago, it has all the functionality of Roboform I used, password store, form filling, synching etc – never had any regrets. It’s nowhere near as clunky as RB, it supports IE, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari etc and it hooks into your gadgets (blackberry, iphone, symbian – maybe not android yet etc). Best part is that its FREE and its FF 4 ready. It had an import feature from Roboform when I did the switch.

I use Free Download Manager, its also FF4 ready

All of that said I’m still using FF3.6 most of the time.

      nw2222

      Thanks for your response nw2222
I downloaded the latest version of Download Manager and it couldn’t install its add-in, sort support and received back advice from Source Forge to install version 3.5.954.0 and that installed no worries.
      thanks

    • in reply to: Firefox 4 release announced #1273887

I tried FireFox 4 and went back to 3 because i worked out I’d have to upgrade RoboForm which now means again PAYING MORE MONEY, an annual fee i prefer to do without. Also could not get Download Manager add-in to install either. So sticking with FireFox version 3

    • in reply to: Acronis 2011 issues #1273886

I’ve kept an image made by TIH 2009, had a problem when i first installed 2011 version, used the 2009 image and then reinstalled. Having tried a restore using Vista HP on my Toshiba Laptop 2009 version startup manager shut me out of computer and had to use Vista recovery back to out of box default. So was keen to try 2011 version and startup manager seems to work ok. Took more than month to obtain a disk with 2011 from Acronis however i must say there support people are first class, very helpful and maintained support until Resolved.

Perhaps you might install Google Picasa program try and see if it can locate them.
      And or
you might like to check out this program http://www.z-a-recovery.com/

    • in reply to: Installing Foxit Reader without the extras #1268285

I prefer to use Nitro PDF ( info and download ). It is faster and smaller than Adobe. It does not install junkware like Foxit. And you can edit and print PDF files better with Nitro. There is a Firefox plug-in from Nitro which will just open PDF files within the Firefox browser. And Nitro is free, complete with editing capabilities. The same company makes Primo PDF for doing PDF printouts.

I to use Nitro, actually thought it was so good paid for the Professional version, also use there Free convert Web-Page to PDF plug-in.

You might try HTML Kit program: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

    • in reply to: Acronis 2011 backup image instructions #1258395

The image Acronis first made should put your whole computer back to the state it was at the time you made that image, the whole computer.

When you tried out the recovery disk on your daughters computer, Acronis would have looked for the recovery partition Acronis likely put on your computers hard drive.

Your option six sounds ok, if you can afford a new Hard Drive and can boot it with networks then you might be able to install from the external hard drive the first image you made.

However from what you have said Acronis made a image when you first purchased the program, and you stored that image on a external Western Digital Hard drive. Connecting the external Western Digital Hard drive to your computer, then open Acronis program, locate the first image made and have Acronis install it on your hard drive.

Other files like photos and documents you may wish to recover, can later be recovered from the later images you have made (hopefully).
Not much point in trying to save an image of the corrupt hard drive now as any image you make will put the corruption right on the computer. So first try installing the first image you made, then later i think you should be able to locate files that were not saved at the time the first image.

    • in reply to: Acronis 2011 backup image instructions #1257884

If your computer has Seagate or Maxtor hard drives, you can download and use Seagate DiscWizard for free. It’s a basic version of the regular Acronis True Image, but under the Seagate brand. Probably not as sophisticated as the regular Acronis that has to be purchased, but it’s been fine for my simple needs. My computer has Windows XP Pro and two 160GB Seagate internal hard drives. Once a week I create an image backup from one drive to the other and find it easy to do. I can’t vouch for its ability to restore a backup, since I never had to do that.

      http://www.seagate.com/support/discwizard/dw_ug.en.pdf

      http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=DiscWizard&vgnextoid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

I firstly purchased a Seagate External drive and was then able to download and use Seagate DiscWizard. Then on purchasing Acronis True Image Home 2009 i received a %50 discount on Acronis True Image Home…which was sweet…

I have Toshiba Laptop with hidden partition named “0” and found Acronis True Image Home Recovery Manager DID NOT work at all…the hidden partition stops it from booting…em

Just this last week my External Seagate FreeAgent Pro disk disappeared after running Auslogics, eventually i downloaded later Classic version of FreeAgent and that seems to have sorted that ok…

    • in reply to: Free space on C drive constantly disappearing #1235639

Thanks for all your attention to my problem.

I have and had been running auslogics defrag and while it is a great piece of software it never was able to recover the lost HD space that system restore was mysteriously consuming.

The C drive has normally about 30GB of free space. Other wise the drive has a total of 75 GB which I think is plenty for the OS and the program files. Data is stored on another partition.

My vista ver is a 32 bit OS.

AFAICT, Vista doesn’t allow the easy management of the system restore settings and I was unable to access the system restore space allocation as Ted Myers found is possible on 7.

But Gerald Shepherd’s link to the Hot to Geek article seems like a bulls eye answer. Once I get on as an administrator I’ll report back on my success.

      Thanks

      Curt

If thats works good, if not resolved using Ccleaner have you checked how many restore points are there?
I use Paragon (paid version) to check and manage my hard drive.
You might consider running the Seagate
SeaTools is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disk drive in your external hard drive, desktop or laptop computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disk drive and any other non-Seagate disk drive.
