Installed the latest version of Virtualbox 4.3.10 and Android 4.4 loaded fine!

Same here; my host machine is a Mac, and something in 4.3.10 fixed the problem. Android running now!

I should note that I also had the same trouble getting Firefox to download the Android image; it was stuck in a loop, asking me to enter the validation code. Switched to another browser and all was well.

I’m seeing the same thing; running VirtualBox on a Mac, not an Windows machine, but everything was the same for setup. The ISO will not boot properly; something is crashing

I downloaded it and installed it, so now I’m running Vista SP2

    • in reply to: MSE 4.0 is out of beta #1332388

I guess I’m one of the unlucky ones; I saw the updated, thought “Great” and attempted to install it — machine hung. Did a fresh reboot and tried again… machine hangs. Downloaded v4 separately and attempted to install — Machine hangs. I was running v2 and it was working well for me. Now I’ve abandoned it for another anti-virus checker that will at least, install. The only “troubleshooting” tip I get is to make sure other anti-virus programs are uninstalled or not running… duh!? Hello!?!? I was running THEIR PREVIOUS VERSION.

      *sigh*

On another topic, when I started using MS security client, it dragged down my system until I excluded its own directories — is this still necessary under 4.0? Seems like a half-smart app would know to exclude itself.

Thanks; I’ll try it when I get my hands on it and see what happens.

I read the article with interest, because, I, too, changed to using MSIE at Windows Secrets recommendation. When I first installed it, it was truly AWFUL and my computer slowed down almost to a standstill. Some investigation revealed that MSIE was spending most of its time scanning my firewall log files – when I excluded these, MSIE faded into the background and has not been a problem. If the test had used a PC with a firewall, the results may have been quite different.

    • in reply to: Repeated meetings & holidays #1309382

I appreciate the response, but that’s not really going to work; I was using the 1st just as an example – there may be a way around the 1st of the month by using the first weekday, but if I have, say, meetings every Monday, I would hope that Outlook would be smart enough to warm me about all of the Monday US holidays through the year, and let me either skip the date, or move it. Maybe there is a way to schedule meetings only for days marked as “working days”, but I cannot find it.

      Thanks

There is a lot to know about macros (VBA procedures) if you haven’t worked with them before in Office. But if you are familiar with Word and Excel macros, then the major difference in Outlook is that they all are stored in a single file (VbaProject.OTM) rather than in potentially multiple templates.

If you’re motivated to experiment, give it a try.

Thanks; I am pretty familiar with Word & Excel macros, but I was hoping that Outlook had a “record” like Word or Excel does – I usually get a rough idea from it doing the recording, and then I refine what I do. But it’s been a while.

Anyway, many thanks for the help.

I did send myself a test message and hit DELETE, but it vanished and I couldn’t find it… I then did a PURGE, hoping it would move to Deleted Items, but it didn’t. I may use your macro to make things go better.

Sigh… “Microsoft: making people happier about Linux with every product”

To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:

Right click on an open area of the desktop
      Select New / Shortcut
      Enter in “shutdown -s -t 00” – no quotes
      Press the Next button
For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.

      For a reboot, enter “shutdown -r -t 00”
      For a logoff, enter “shutdown -l -t 00”

      Shutdown [{-l|-s|-r|-a}] [-f] [-m [\ComputerName]] [-t xx] [-c “message”] [-d[p]:xx:yy]

      Parameters

-l – Logs off the current user, this is also the defualt. -m ComputerName takes precedence.
-s – Shuts down the local computer.
      -r – Reboots after shutdown.
-a – Aborts shutdown. Ignores other parameters, except -l and ComputerName. You can only use -a during the time-out period.
-f – Forces running applications to close.
-m [\ComputerName] – Specifies the computer that you want to shut down.
-t xx – Sets the timer for system shutdown in xx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
-c “message” – Specifies a message to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127 characters. You must enclose the message in quotation marks.
      Give that a try.

This is exactly what I was looking for; I now have shortcuts on the Start menu and desktop, and possibly my toolbar, but it may be too easy to hit from there.

      Many thanks!

See the free tool – PsShutdown.

      Joe

Hmmm… doesn’t seem to work for a non-Admin (haven’t tried it as Admin). I’m getting “Could not start PsShutdown on : Access is denied.”

I had this problem with XP also. What worked for me was to set the parent folder to the view I wanted in the subfolders. Worked 99% of the time. Only time it didn’t work was when I had to ‘Repair’ the OS. Then it reset to ‘defaults’.

One other thing you might try, is to click on ‘Properties’ of the folder, click ‘Customize’ tab, and change the “Kind of folder you want”

I found the problem; I had PowerDesk installed, and that had somehow messed up the settings. I have since uninstalled PowerDesk and things are back to normal

PD was interfering with another application, too.

    • in reply to: Save as broken #1189232

In the old days, the inability to save as anything other than a .dot file often indicated the presence of a macro virus.

I don’t have time to do a lot of research on this issue at the moment, but a quick Google search turned up a page from Boston College that looks like it might be helpful. Here’s the link. Take it with a grain of salt; I haven’t read the entire page, so I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the instructions. But at first glance, it appears to be worthwhile.

      http://www.bc.edu/offices/help/security/virus/macrovirus.html

Do post back and let us know if that page, or any information in the link Hans provided, is helpful to you (or if you find another solution).

      Good luck!

      Jan

I will look up the links to let you know. It only happens when I edit a certain document or copies thereof, so I suspect that something is amiss in the document.

      Hi Richard

      How about

      1) Open a folder
      2) Click Tools
      3) Folder Options
      4) View and click Reset All Folders ( NB Desktop.ini file is not affected)
      5) Close the folder.
      6) Open and customize the folder again.
      7) Click View
      8) Apply to All Folders

XP Admin may just need a kick start

Well, I tried it — it may or may not be working… that sounds confusing, so I better clarify; the first time I resized and changed the display type of a window, it didn’t seem to “remember” it (despite having the “Remember each folder’s view” box ticked. After a time delay, the first folder did… However, multiple attempts to have it remember the settings for the folder that opens for “System” and other folders aren’t doing any good — they all open in the same size and position.
