It works. It’s free. No catch. I have it on all our computers. There is no reason to not use it, unless you need some very powerful Excel capabilities (those that only a few corporate types may use). Get it.

Oh. I didn’t understand the problem. Sorry about that.

Couldn’t you just disable Java Scripting? It’s major security issue anyway. No-script addon in Firefox is great.

Well, there is a caveat: Acronis True Image WD Edition allows selecting only Western digital HDD as a restore location and for Cloning operation.

Open Office creates PDF’s. It’s free, works well and reads/writes in Office format – if you need that capability.

    • in reply to: Skype or similar software #1173435

Hello, I am using Skype.com software to talk to my family in different parts of the world. Skype software allows me to hold a conference call with two family members or more, but does not allow me to use the webcam to see more than one family member at a time. Is there any software that can allow me to do this? I was wondering if Yahoo messenger or other free software. It also has to be Mac compatible. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Seba, take a look at Stickam.com They provide a free video casting service. You could use their service to host the streaming and then password protect the room so non-family members couldn’t join. As long as everyone has an account and knows what time to sign in you could host a room and then see everyone else. Not sure if audio work for everyone or just a the host, the video does and so does chat.

You’ll need to explore the options.

      God bless,

      Rob

The program called Spinrite can fix that drive. If it’s really hosed it might run for days in it’s attempts to recover bad sectors but if there is a possibility of a recovery – it will do it. It’s a bit expensive at about $90.00 but the author has a 30 day money back guarantee.

Go to http://www.grc.com, it’s Steve Gibsons website and give it a try.

Don’t forget the best way to take care of a drive – a quarter inch drill will keep anyone from getting data from it.

I use Xmarks also. It will synch to any of my computers (bookmarks and passwords if you choose) if I have the add-in in place or I can just go to their website and access them.

If your friend is using internet cafe’s I hope he is looking deeper than just the convenience of bookmarks. Make sure his computer is locked down (file sharing turned off, firewall, virus scanner) and that he’s doing everything on the web via a VPN and https when appropriate.

I have all my email accounts come through Gmail. If I get 5 spam emails a week that actually gets through, I’m shocked. I then flag them as spam and they don’t come back.

No extra programs to install, no processes to run and I can get my email from any internet connected computer or portable device. It works great!

      Oh, it supports IMAP too.

    • in reply to: bookmarking tool that is really simple #1153029

Could I suggest using Firefox as your browser. It will allow you to just add bookmarks, put them in folders, add a tag for quick reference – for example tag a few sites as “ecology” then you can very quickly click bookmarks, move down to tags and highlight Ecology – it will pop up your recently visited ecology related websites.

With Firefox you should also add a simple add-in called Foxmarks. With Foxmarks your can quickly and automatically sync your bookmarks (and site passwords if you choose to) between multiple machines. This is awesome when you work on a laptop and then sit down at a desktop or visa versa. You will always have the same bookmarks at each location.

Foxmarks is now available for IE in a Beta vesion. I just installed it while typing this posting and it installed into IE 7 without a problem and immediately imported (upon my approval) all my bookmarks from Firefox.

First, let me say I own a copy of Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008 and love it.

But, this article is confusing. confused

They are offering Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 but once you get it you can “upgrade” to Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008 for a few bucks?
I’m looking at the Ashampoo site and don’t see a version 2009 offered. But, the link is for a download from http://www.vnudownloads.co.uk/ashampoo_bur…09_804_4877.exe.

Anyway, the product is worth a try. REmember, since the d/l isn’t from the author of the software be sure you scan the file for virus’s first.

I have a love/hate relationship with great posts like this. So much to explore and download – then so much to uninstall LOL

Yet people think over millions of years the earth was formed as particles became organized. Things fall apart over time – not get more and more ordered.

But, I digress – Great links. Thanks for sharing.
