A very quick way to do this is to have two blogs. They are easily setup with WordPress and are free. If you have your own domain name and webhosting you can run it on your server but it’s not necessary.

There are lots of them available, you’ll need to find the one with the features you like.

A: You many have to call on a tech, if you’re not technically adept yourself, but if you have all your stuff on a backup drive, or DVD’s, the restore process to get right back where you were before the HD took a dump, will only take a few minutes or an hour or so.

If your computer and backup drive are stolen or if you have a fire and they are literally fried, local backup will not save you. Offsite backup, in addition to, a local backup ensures your data will be safe. Some people don’t have anything of value to backup and never mess with it. Others have thousands of photo’s or small business records that they just can’t lose, so an offsite backup really makes sense and Carbonite makes it automatic. For both the technically challenged and the experienced user it’s a terrific tool.

If you have a Gmail account just “share” your photo’s to Picasa. This way you can access them from your computer and your phone (using Gallery) and you’ll have an offsite backup. Using a WiFi connection you can upload all the photo’s in just minutes. I have an Epic do it all the time. Although this will be my last Samsung Phone. I’ve been waiting since August for Android 2.2 (Froyo) They won’t give us the update but yet they sell the new phones with it.

      Duke,

You don’t have to check to see what has been backed-up. Designate directories and all files in there are backed-up either when they are created or when modified. Each file that has been backed-up will have a small green arrow next to it. If it hasn’t been backed-up yet the arrow won’t be there yet.

Carbonite is a great tool – for both the geek and the non-techy person (like my mother-in-law). I know her data and photo’s are backed-up for the day when she is so infected with malware I have to reinstall Windows. 🙂

I give it 3 weeks until the first exploits are out.

The Adobe Acrobat line has been exploited terribly this year.

Using a modern browser like Chrome – just enter search items in the address bar and hit return. In Firefox the search bar is right at the top. The new internet explorer allows searches right in the address bar to. I dont’ know about previous versions as I dropped IE back at version 6 as it’s such an insecure and greatly exploited browser.

    • in reply to: Windows Phone 7: What do you think about it? #1250826

Since the phone isn’t actually for sale yet no one really knows how it will work for them. Paul Thurott at winsupersite.com really likes the OS and out of the 9 phones being released he says only one really stands out. Check out his site for more information.

Other than Microsoft not wanting to miss the Christmas shopping time, there doesn’t seem to be a logical reason to release a smart phone without cut and paste. It’s like iPhone initial release all over again. They have the technology but consciously chose not to release it. This looks suspiciously like their first rendition of Windows Phone OS is actually a beta release.

I love my Android based phone. It does everything I need it to do and more. I’m sure this new phone will fill another niche in the smart phone market.

Any one discovered any other game-winning features?

You can use VLC and a portable version of VLC to stream videos from your desktop to your Android OS smart phone. I just stumbled on to such apps over the weekend and haven’t tried it yet. This might be of interest to some. Look for the portable/mobile side apps at the AndroidMarket or my favorite appbrain.com .

    • in reply to: Is it safe to use a PC optimization program? #1217099

If you are running XP and you install and uninstall software regularly your best bet is to do a reinstall. Many people will do a clean install every year.

Backup all your data, music, pictures, etc and do a clean install. You will feel like you have a brand new system. BUT – the VERY FIRST thing you do after the install is to install all the updates from Microsoft. Then reinstall your apps. It’s time consuming but when done you will be glad you did it.

The optimizer programs can cause you headaches, especially if they delete a file you actually need. I strongly recommend a clean install.

You’re not going to be able to blow through your monthly allowance uploading on an EvDO Rev.A connection for an hour or two: VVZ claims “typical speeds of 500 to 800 Kbps.” A sustained rate of 800 Kbps would be about 360MB per hour, if I’ve calculated correctly.

Nor would you necessarily consume the maximum. Video resolution (e.g., 640×480) and frames per second, and audio quality also are factors in how much bandwidth would be used.

This article has some tips on tweaking bandwidth usage in the Ustream.tv broadcast console: Streaming Video: Creating a Professional uStream Show | Internet Marketing Strategy: Conversation Marketing (see #6).

I tried to calculate the bandwidth and came up with the same number. Using the parameters above I did the following. 800,000 bps * 60 sec/min * 60 min/hr = 2,880,000,000 bits per hour. divide that by 1 million and we get 2880 Mb/hr divide this by 8 bits/byte = 360,000,000 or 360 MB / hr.

This concludes Geek Math for the week.
