I use Win7 with Linux Mint 17.2. I use Linux Grub to be able to dual boot so I can use Windows 7 or Linux. Linux will read the files on the NTFS partition and I can copy and save files back to Windows from Mint. Window can’t read the Linux disk format thought. Windows has so few programs that I really need, as Linux has so many fine alternatives that are good or better than Windows applications. I find so many pluses to Linux that I rarely use Windows any more. If Quicken ran on Linux I could easily use Linux as my choice all the time.

For me there was a learning curve to be sure, but with the abundance of help on line it didn’t take me long to get the hang of Linux. I find it a lot easier to maintain than Windows by far.

Take a look a eMclient. It is free for two email accounts. I have 3 so I have the two other accounts send their received mail to my gmail account. It does both POP and IMAP, can sync with calendars and tasks too. HTML or both to send email.

    • in reply to: Need POP3 email client #1508090

is there any reliable solid email client for pop3 available
i need to download my email and keep it myself
for speed and convenience as well as to back up

      want a pop3 client for both win8.1 and xpprosp3

      different clients are okay

note that had used eudora 7.1.0.9 until changes
at isp or glitch in pc causes ntdll.dll error so i can receive but not send email

      must be rock solid
and if it is xp then please provide a version number that is known to work

WAY TOO MANY PROGRAMS KEEP UPDATING VERSIONS AND DO *NOT* WORK ON XP ANY LONGER with nasty results when you try to use them anyway even if an earlier version did work

the newest version is worse than a virus when that happens

eM Client should work for you. It is free with a maximum of two email accounts. If you have more accounts than that the pay version should work for you. I have my outlook mail sent tmy Gmail account because of Gmail’s excellent s.p.a.m filtering. I really like eM Client. I use it on all my Windows computers. I use Thunderbird for my Linux machines and it is good as well.

I would give em Client a look. I use it as an imap, but it also does pop mail. To email accounts let you use the free version. More than two email accounts you need to upgrade to the pro version. On my Linux I use Thunderbird. It is a good email too, with many add-ons available such as calendar and tasks etc.

I need a recommendation for a reliable, and ideally free, webmail application to use on my traveling laptop, which does not have my usual Outlook installed. In the past, I used Verizon Webmail, but during a recent trip to Mexico, was not able to get on for two weeks. It supposedly had something to do with “blocked” IP addresses for “security” reasons, but who knows. It worked last year from another location of the same resort. So, I need an alternative. Tried mail2web yesterday and couldn’t get that to work. While troubleshooting on their site, got connected to one of these scam sites that says they need to “clean up” your machine for a fee. Forget that! Your recommendations will be most appreciated.

      Hi Fred,

I install MSE on a lot of PCs. I have found, however, that on many machines, it can slow things to a crawl. The cause if this is, by Microsoft’s own warnings, that Microsoft Security Essentials doesn’t like any other malware applications running at the same time, such as Malware Bytes or Super Antispyware. I have found this to be true on most, but not all XP operating systems. Other XP installations seem to work fine with other malware programs, such as these installed. By the way, the other malware programs don’t need to be running in the backround; just installed on the PC. When I find a PC that is adversely effected this way, I then uninstall MSE and install Avast! instead. This may have already been pointed out in the many postings on this subject, as I didn’t read all the posts.

    • in reply to: Manually Deleting the MS Removal Tool Virus #1281668

I just manually removed the MS Removal Tool Malware manually. The following link has the procedure for XP and Vista. There are also downloadable fixes to run, but I chose the manual method. I booted into Safe Mode, with network connections. I used regedit to delete the registry files that the malware installed. I downloaded unhide.exe and ran it from a the command prompt utility. (go to Start, Run and type cmd). I imagine Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware would take care of the rogue registry entries as well. Check this site out for specific instruction.

    • in reply to: XP Pro startup hang #1246589

I work on computers and had this exact problem a couple of weeks ago. I repaired Windows XP, tried a different hard drive, disconnected the CD and DVD ROM players. All no help. I put the PC back to its original configuration and removed the video and NIC cards. Windows XP worked fine. No hang ups. I don’t know which card was causing the problem. Since the PC had both an on board video and NIC built into the motherboard. Perhaps a reseat of those cards would have fixed it as well. Hope this helps in your trouble shooting.
