First step might be to rename your normal.dotm file. You didn’t mention which operating system you have, but in Windows 7, you browse to C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates. Word must be closed in order for you to rename the Normal template. I usually just add “.old” on the end of the file name so it is “normal.dotm.old”. Start Word and see if you options now work.

If renaming the Normal doesn’t help, you could try running Word in safe mode. If you don’t have the same issue in safe mode, then you can test to see if you have add-ins that may be causing the issue. To start Word in safe mode, you can type in the search field under the Start button in Windows 7: winword.exe /a

I had a similar problem and was able to use one of Microsoft’s Mr. Fixit tools to remove the bad entries. I ran the Mr. Fixit tool at http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall as Administrator to completely uninstall the old version of JAVA that was causing the issue. Then reinstalled from the JAVA website. (Windows 7)

If you don’t use them, you could try disabling them or removing them to see if the behavior improves.

I have found some add-ins can cause mysterious things to occur with reading panes.

    • in reply to: Outlook 2010 Contacts vs Address Book #1371723

It may be that the Address Book isn’t “starting” in your Contacts folder. From the Home tab while you are at your Inbox, click on the Address Book icon. Choose Tools > Options from the menu. Is “Start with contacts folder selected?”

    • How about a kind of “dumb” work-around? What if you created a table in the header in Word to match the headings in Excel?

One more quick addition in case you didn’t know this was an option… with Adobe Acrobat Pro, you can set the document to open by default with the Bookmarks open. While the document is open in Adobe Acrobat, choose File > Properties from the menu. Go to the Initial View tab. Set the Navigation Tab field to “Bookmarks Panel and Page” and then click Ok and Save one more time.

Easy enough – Thank you, WendellB!

    • in reply to: Top-of-page space before paragraphs #1250623

I would agree with you Terry! Seems like a crazy error to me. If I set the top margin of a page to 2 inches, I would expect the first line of text to start at the 2 inch mark, irregardless of extra spacing applied above it.

    • in reply to: Contact Lists #1250622

Is it the abbreviated list that only shows contacts with valid email addresses or it is a completely different list?

    • in reply to: How to find hyperlinks in an email? #1250621

This would work to get you back to the original text color with the formatted hyperlinks (in Outlook 2007, so I’m guessing it might be the same in 2010), but you will lose the formatting you applied through out the email. So it may not work for what you need if you are concerned about changing everything back to where it started sans-formatting.

Highlight all the text, go to the Format Text tab, Click on Quick Styles and choose Clear Formatting.

    • in reply to: Outlook contacts “file as” issue #1250619

      Two possible places to check:
      1. Tools > Options, Preferences tab, Contact Options
      or
      2. If you have Exchange, Tools > Account settings, Address Books tab. Double click the Outlook Address Book

    • in reply to: Changing text to hyperlink #1249189

If you are using MS Access, you can format the field as a hyperlink in your table.

    • in reply to: Word 2003 Synonyms #1249186

You can try setting the language for all the text in your document. Select the text, then choose Tools > Language and select English (I’m assuming, since you hail from MD). Then right click and see if the Thesaurus option is working now.
