On the Review tab, Proofing tab, click the Word Count icon and select whether footnotes, endnotes, or the contents of textboxes are to be included in the word count. These are the only options that I am aware of for word count.

You can use the old keyboard shortcuts (over 90% of which still work). That way you don’t have to find the location for that function on the Ribbon. You may also have trouble with the new paragraph spacing which adds 10 points after each paragraph and uses 1.15 line spacing instead of the previous 1 line. You can simply change your defaults to 0 points after each paragraph and single line spacing. If you retain the new spacing when you type an address block or a list, the spacing can be a real pain. Simply highlight this area and apply the No Spacing style to it. This removes the extra spacing.

The long and short of it is that there is a definite learning curve when going to 2007 or 2010. My advice is to get used to it. It gets easier!

    • in reply to: Installation of Office 2010 #1239813

As part of the install you will be asked if you want to replace your previous install. Say no. You can have multiple installs on the same computer but Word will default to the last version used. If you want to use the other install, Word will go through a process of making that install active.

If you have more that one install, the oldest version must be installed first.

Data is in separate files, you will not lose any if you uninstall.

    • in reply to: WORD2007 pulling up old WORD2003 templates #1237753

If you have identical templates in both the workgroup location and the individual pc’s location, Word will always default to the templates on your pc. In other words, if you have updated xyz.dot in the workgroup location, but not on your pc, Word will always default to the older version on your pc.

It depends when and where you bought it. In the US, yes- free upgrade. In the UK???

One of the most useful things in Win7 is the search box off the icon on the bottom left of the screen. Just type in a topic (such as Mouse settings) and up will come a list with more information than you need.

Select text and Shift-F3 will change case. It will toggle through all caps, all lower case, and sentence case.

    • in reply to: word 2003 merge for labels using excel db #1197414

I’m not sure if this is your problem, but…

The only process that is not intuitive in a mail merge (in 2003 and newer) is when doing labels. When you are finished adding merge fields to the first label, you must press the Propagate Labels icon on the Mail Merge toolbar in order to have the merge fields in the first label copied to all of the labels.

      I hope this helps.

      Why does this surprise you?

Win 7 has been out for about 6 weeks and now MS has the nerve to cripple a trial version! It was never meant to be a free version.

    • in reply to: Save default margins in Word 2007 #1187059

Double Click on the top half of the Ruler (not the bottom half or you will set a tab). This brings up the Page Setup menu. Select the margins you want and on the bottom left check Default.

    • in reply to: Word – Startup template location #1186786

      My view on shared templates-

I never experienced any problems with templates in the Workgroup location as well as the default location. However, if you have 2 templates with the same name (1 in each location), your pc will always default to the template on your pc even if the template in the workgroup location is newer. The answer is not to have identical templates in each location.

Try deleting normal.dot and normal.dotx. They may have become corrupt. These are hidden files.

    • in reply to: Hp Printer Driver #1183785

      Thanks for your reply.

The Vista driver does not install so when I go to Control Panel the printer does not show.

I am heartened by your printer driver being ready in the next few weeks.

I can see no reason for the delay. This probably developed from a pssing contest between Microsoft and HP. Maybe MS didn’t release code to HP by a date that HP wanted.

      Thanks again.
