      According to Microsoft . . . .

    • in reply to: Microsoft releases free Security Essentials 2.0 #1259563

      Rui, Rebel,
Hello.. Thanks you for your responses as i don’t use “Mickey MSE” i wasn’t aware … so i stand corrected .. Just don’t have any trust in MS when it comes to some things. Rebel ( Ouch !) Sorry if i bore you with my “tiresome tirades” Just think that there should be “both sides” presented, and every one should have as much information as possible…. even if you don’t like it…Does this mean that you won’t be coming to my Christmas Party ? Regards Fred

Well, if you were not “aware”, then why bother posting inaccuracies?

As far as “both sides being presented, and everyone should have as much information as possible. ….” – you are absolutely correct. But “information” (at least in most cases) is based on facts – not personal, biased, and in many cases – uninformed opinions. I find it sad that as a relatively new “moderator”, you seem compelled to continually bash Microsoft at every possible opportunity. But then, you’ve been doing that ever since you first joined the old “Woody’s Lounge”. And no Fred, I won’t be coming to your Christmas party. I’m afraid I might find some Hemlock in my eggnog.

Perhaps THIS is the one you were looking for Fred?

But then that simply wouldn’t coincide with your endless and tiresome tirades against anything Microsoft, would it? But then why post information that might be in opposition to your “opinions”.

It’s really getting quite boring Fred!

    • in reply to: What's the point of IE9? #1249074

I could have sworn I closed the thread, thanks for reminding me that some people can’t read. It is sad that such things happen. I will not be drawn into such. Please read and understand in the future

Actually Robert, I don’t think that individual users can “close” a thread. You aksed a rhetorical question, others have resoponded, and you don’t like the responses.

I do think that most people CAN read. It’s unfortunate (for you I suppose) that most don’t agree with your position, but I don’t think that’s “sad” at all. Perhaps if you don’t want dissenting opinions, then perhaps you should simply refrain from posting?

    • in reply to: Adobe Reader 9 update #1248317

      Where does it install, exactly?

I used Help > Check for Updates from within Adobe Reader to update, and I can’t see that any McAfee products have been added to my system. I don’t see anything new on the desktop, Start > Programs, Add/Remove Programs, or obvious places in the IE UI.

I installed the update as well, and I can find absolutely no evidence of anything related to McAfee on my system.

Partition Wizard is also highly regarded (and free!)

    • in reply to: The Ribbon #1233342

“I find the statement ‘Better move with the times’ really defeatist. Why should we sit back and have this garbage foisted onto us? It is OUR money.”

I’m going to have to agree with Ted on this one.

I too found the Ribbon very confusing and not very intuitive when I first installed Office 2007. But as with anything new, there is a learning curve, and I chose to put a little effort into learning the new interface. While there are still a few instances where I curse Microsoft and search the for location of the the old familiar commands, I’m really experiencing very few roadblocks with the new software. The Ribbon in Office 2010 (at least from what I’ve heard) is much more customizeable than the 2007 version. In any event, MS is not going to revert to the old and familiar menus and toolbars.

But you are absolutely correct. If you consider the Ribbon to be a backwards step (and many people do) – you certainly don’t have to “have this garbage foisted onto us”. There are other products in the marketplace, and no one is forced to purchase Microsoft products. The consumer votes with the wallet. And everyone is entitled to a vote.

    • in reply to: Strange requirement to reboot router #1232632

The WRT-54G is fairly old hardware. I doubt you are going to have much success with it and windows 7 vista.

      Why? ? ?

I’m still using a WRT54G with Win7, and I have had no problems with Vista. In fact, I stilll have 2 Vista machines connecting with no problems.

    • in reply to: Ongoing and annoying “security alert” #1230387

That shouldn’t create any problems David. Quoting from this Microsoft article (it refers to Vista and IE7 but is valid for W7 and IE8)

“Symptom: When navigating to an HTTPS site on Windows Vista, a check for certificate revocation is made to determine if the presented certificate remains valid.

Workaround: If this feature causes performance problems in your environment, the certificate revocation check can be disabled.

You can disable this feature by unchecking the Check for server certificate revocation checkbox in the Security section of the Advanced tab of the Internet Control Panel.”

      Lots of information here.

    • in reply to: Start Menu Access Denied #1230097

I cannot access my Start Menu – get a message that it is not accessible – access denied. I am logged on as administrator; I have confirmed that permissions are in place.

I am running Win7 32 bit, so I’m not sure about the 64 bit version, but try this path:

“C:UsersUSERAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSt art MenuPrograms”. It opens fine for me.

    • in reply to: Removing Systray Icons #1229045

Those don’t appear natively in the Win7 system tray. You must have some other software installed that is generating these.

    • in reply to: Right-click on Any file crashes Explorer #1228939

I have tried System Restore and it has been unable to complete restoration on 2 different restore points. I’ve run a complete system scan (Norton Security Suite) with no joy, and I’ve tried turning Norton off – also no luck.

Norton has a setting which prevents anything from overwriting its files. A System Restore of course, is trying to do just that. If you have that switch turned on (in NIS 2010, click on Settings>Miscellaneous Settings>Norton Product Tamper Protection), turn it off, reboot and then try a System Restore.

    • in reply to: How do I copy an animated GIF from a web site #1228653

” Right-click, Save as —.jpg. Insert it in”

I don’t think that “Save as —.jpg” will produce an animated GIF (which is what the OP wants).

Jefferson is correct – Word and PowerPoint do not support animated GIFs.
