Sorry – Let’s try this again
When you login, you’re asked for your name and password.
This is the password that worked when I signed in, but when I had a problem with a “joke” post (here), I had to shut down Internet Explorer
to get rid of the URL. It was sent to my email as a group of posts for Woody’s. Posted by “ilona53”, also known as Lonnie (bubbles) with the
word next to the URL “laugh”. When I clicked on it, some webpage about personal ads for dates came up, and the only way I could get
the page to go away was to shut down IE, go offline, then come back. When I got back and logged in, the password worked. Later, when
I tried to post something, it stopped working. I have since gotten a new password, and am using that one now.
I didn’t appreciate the “joke”………or maybe something in my Internet Explorer suddenly stopped working???? Too weird!
Maybe this helps explain the original post – I hope.

In the forum for IE, ilona 53 Lonnie (bubbles) posted a
URL, followed by the word (laugh)…..I clicked on it, and had to shut down
the Internet Connection to get the URL off my screen. I didn’t laugh.

Put the Win 98SE CD in the drive, type sfc in the “Run” box, then click “replace one file” (or words to that effect), then type in that Cab file whatever, and the
computer should just take it from there. I use it often to fix things that get corrupted. Good Luck.

    • in reply to: IE 6.0 vs CompuServe – Two Logins to Get One #1799963

I had a similar problem with IE6 & Juno – Finally, after I thought i had all the settings necessary changed to fix it, I found that IE6 had
NOT accepted the changes I put in. So, as Juno was trying to log in, so was IE6. One modem was dialing away, and the other was
throwing screens that told me that it could not log on because the line was not available……Even as the connection was completed
and I was ready to browse, the little screens (3 of them, consecutively) kept insisting that a connection could not be made.
Somehow, after the third re-setting of IE6, it has stopped the nonsense. Maybe you will find something like this?? Good Luck.

    • in reply to: IE.6 & Juno – clash? #633725

      Thanks; for the reply –
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
Juno provided 8 pages of possibilities, so I tried all that applied – no change.
Have written back and forth for two weeks, each time with more setting possibilities.
Finally, I checked Internet Explorer, and found that the settings I made in Juno did NOT translate to Intgernet Explorer.
I just discovered this, so with two different settings competing to open the browser, good old Microsoft seems to have done it to me again, eh?
Thanks for the reply. Someone warned me not to go to IE6 – – maybe this is why they said it.

I hit the print screen, then go to wordpad click on the clipboard, and paste it there.
It may be a good idea to hit Print, then set up the properties for landscape to
get all the information captured. Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: Silent modem, etc…. #632539

      HI
I think that may be it – I have disabled all the “automatic scheduled” stuff I could find (I think I got all of it) because I’m running basically
one or two graphic programs and none of the microsoft stuff for offices, etc. that came with the machine. I do scandisk and defrag on my own,
and even the anti-virus updates are done when I say so – nothing in this machine is automatic.
That shrinking and expanding file you talked about sounds like the only other possibility, so I’ll see if I can set the swap file to stop it.
Thanks for all the responses and help. How do you people learn all this stuff!!??? awesome.

    • in reply to: Silent modem, etc…. #630386

I have eTrust anti-virus, but you have to click on it to get updates – so, I guess you’d call it “benign”.
I don’t have any stuff scheduled to happen automatically
I just did a scandisk, but that was manual also
The modem is built-in – – is there a way to disable that with settings?
We’re in a terrific power shortage here, and have been asked to switch everything not in use off, and
not use most appliances until after 7PM to conserve energy, so when that’s done, I guess I could
consider letting it run all the time.
Would appreciate help with modem settings, if there are such things – and thanks for all the help so far. You guys are great.

No, I don’t have Word or any of the four discs that came with Win98SE. I do a lot of graphics, and didn’t want to clutter up the machine
with stuff I wouldn’t use. Actually, I have 512MB ram, and 8 gbs CD, and very few “regular” programs installed to keep the
space available for 3D graphics, etc. That’s why I’m confused by this “grinding” when there’s really nothing going on.
It’s a single, non-networked computer owned by a ritired old guy….me – it should be sitting silently when I’m not using it.
Maybe I should just turn if off??

    • in reply to: Javascript errors – #629491

      Hi
what I think I did was upgrade from IE5.5 to IE6………..Microsoft, in their wisdom and control-freaky selves,
saved my favorites and email ;addresses, but changed all the settings I had. I think when they did that,
it opened the door to the javascript error notices. Repeat…….I THINK that’s what happened.
The setting I changed was in the Options / Internet options / Advance settings / then do what Lief said.

    • in reply to: Javascript errors – #629398

Thanks – that’s what I was looking for.
P.S. It’s awfully hard to find out how to reply……but I finally figured it out.
