On my laptop, there’s a “Dell Touchpad” under “Mouse” in Control Panel.

You can also try the Dell Utility “quickset”.
One of the options there is “disable touchpad”
Not in Startup, you can run it from “Program FilesDellQuicksetQuickset.exe”
If not there, download it from the Dell Support Center. http://www.dell.com/dellsupportcenter‎
You need to be registered and it will ask you for the Service Tag of the computer.

    • in reply to: Error codes #1356918

I am getting the same kind of errors you did a couple of years ago.
Don’t see a resolution. Ever figured out what was going on?

      Anyone ran into similar errors?
(Running sysinternals does not do much for me, I have no clue what to look for)
I checked the event viewer, nothing to get excited about.
      Thanks,
      Radu

    • in reply to: Disable Java plugins to avoid new zero-day attack #1348157

Not to discount threats, be they zero or many days, but if you use an application requiring Java, chill out.
Threats come up every and each day. I suppose we all could turn off our computers, or unplug the cable modem.
No reason to panic and take drastic measures.
      Keep your security software up-to-date.
Keep everything up-to-date. Secunia is a good tool.

As far as the recommendation earlier of not using both the 32 and the 64 bit versions; if you use Java (or have it installed) on Win7 I’d install both versions of Java. A pain to keep updated, but how can you make sure that only one of the browsers (32 or 64) is ever used?

    • Norton “Safe Internet” rates magical jelly bean site as safe.
I downloaded and used it from the jellybean site many times, never an issue.

You can buy an older Norton Internet Security (3-PC version) on Amazon for, like, $20+
      Then it’s a free update to 2012.
I use it instead of extending my current Norton installations (only need the CD Keys)

    • I beg to differ.
I would say that most home users don’t have a choice when replacing and old computer or getting a new one. It’s Win7 or nothing.
As far as upgrading XP, I see absolutely no advantage.
Security issues are a big scare.
If you keep up with the fixes and run a decent security program, there’;s no problem.
I have a few users on XP (all versions) with Norton Intenet Security and they are happy.
Additionally, many a time upgrading to Win7 also requires upgrading the applications. Nothing to sneeze at.

I used http://www.techbatterysolutions.com/ happy with them. Price was right, although they do charge shipping.

    • in reply to: Adobe Flash not installing #1332113

I believe you need to install both the 32 and the 64-bit versions.
Use the uninstaller first, as suggested above.

    • in reply to: Trouble with Security Essentials #1332106

There’s a long thread on Microsoft discussing the problem.
One solution which worked for quite a few people was to reboot, run CCLEANER then install (reinstall)
If you use REVO Uninstaller to remove MSE 2.x, you still need to run CCLEANER.
Worked for me under all flavors of Windows.

The Microsoft topic above has additional solutions, including a batch job to clean the registry (read thru, it’s towards the end.

Anyway, it looks like it’s a registry problem.
The MSE uninstall, like many many other apps, does a poor job cleaning after itself on uninstall.

      Good luck.

OOPS. Here’s the MS Support topic:
