    • I am not a supporter of web apps.
You are betting that the app will be available “forever” and that your data will be available if the “vendor” goes out of business.
I prefer to run an app locally, and pay for it.
That way I’ll be in business way after the vendor has gone to greener pastures.
P.S. I usually get the “free” version then upgrade if I decide it’s worth doing it.
P.S. Still an Office 2013 believer. Professional version. You can get it for less than $300. Not a bad deal, really.

    • in reply to: Symantec Norton Security #1489607

      5 for 29 bucks?
      Get it!
I’ve been using Norton since the days of the IBM PC, still using it on XP, WIN7, Vista and Win 8.
      No issues at all.
And getting the previous year’s version at a big discount is the way to go. CD Key will work on the current version. Free upgrade.
P.S. Resource issues have been fixed a long time ago.

    • in reply to: XP Home reinstall #1489602

The CD Key code for Windows XP Home edition is specific to Dell (OEM). So it won’t work on a generic XP image.
ANY DELL XP image will install with no problems.
(I doubt you can get it from Dell).
      Good luck.

Academic version of Adobe Acrobat 11 pro is $110.00

    • in reply to: DOC files to PDFs #1443760

      DoPDF works great.
And it does not take gazillions of MB of storage, nor does it require any additional emulation software.

    • in reply to: Windows XP to Windows 7 #1441400

I built a new system and installed the previous OEM Win7 Pro on it with no issues.
Had to call Microsoft to get a new Key/code, told them the box broke and I’m reinstalling.
      No problems.
P.S. The old box did break, but the new one was not a rebuild, but a brand-new, different hardware.

    • in reply to: What is most compatible move up from XP? #1436448

      Windows 7, no doubt.
Linux, as attractive as it sounds, would not be an option if you use Windows apps.
Windows 8/8.1, even with a “startup” utility making it “look” like Win7 is not a good substitute either.
It *is* different, and, unless you upgrade, some utilities (like backup software) won’t work. Question of drivers also comes up.
Windows 7 *does* come in 32-bit versions, so that’s not an issue.
Might have issues with drivers for older hardware, such as scanners, but that would apply to any OS upgrade.

    • in reply to: Windows update failed #1424254

Started happening a few months ago.
On my 2 “native” XP machine, as well as in the WIN7 PRO XP box.
      ALl running XP3 etc.
      Lots of free space.

      Something Microsoft did.
If you run task manager you’ll see svchost using 99% of the CPU.
Anyway, spent days surfing, looking for a fix (reinstall/reimage not an option).

      Here’s what I did:

      – Turned off automatic updates
      – Downloaded/installed IE8
      – Ran IE8, took all the defaults BUT NO “install updates” anywhere when prompted in the initial setup.
      – Ran “fixit” batch job (see below)
      – Rebooted
      – Direct download/installed “Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2879017) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40390
      – Rebooted
      – Ran Microsoft Update. It takes a loong time (like an hour or so) but if problem fixed you’ll get the usual “updates” list (svchost will still hog the CPU)
      – If yolu’re using Microsoft Security Essentials run a quick scan as soon as you started the Microsoft Update (it worked on my virtual XP, nobody knows why).
      – If no update after waiting, shut down, reboot and try again.
      Worked for me.
      GOOD LUCK!

    • in reply to: Microsoft Security Essentials #1414338

I run MSE on a netbook/WIN7 Pro and an XP box, as well as on a couple of my relatives’ XP boxes. No issues.
I also run Norton Internet Security on XP, Vista and WIN7 Pro. No issues there either. Been using Norton forever, it seems 😉
When Norton license expires, I buy a 3-PC older version off Amazon (a lot cheaper). License Key works for existing installations, and there’s an automatic update to the current version for both existing and new installs.

    • in reply to: How to create USB floppy drive that works! #1404228

      Right, mrj!
Both the price and “working out of the box”.
Been using one on both XP and WIN7 with no issues.

    • in reply to: Running Office 2013 under Win7 #1404227

      No problems at all.
And (in response to another post) I love ” the awful flat UI”. That’s why I am running Office 2003.
(I also have 2010, which I run on other machines, and 2013 which I am not)
I prefer 2003 and I’ll run it forever.
As far as the supposed security holes, I believe that the threat is exaggerated.
There are “standard” ways to mitigate those.

    • in reply to: Acronis, imaging, and partition questions #1396788

      Just a note regarding Acronis;
DO NOT update immediately after a new “version” is released.
I was using Acronis 2013, and stupidly updated when prompted to do so.
      Guess what?
The updated version (still 2013) does NOT support wireless mouse when booted from CD.
Acronis is aware of it, but no fix.
Been like that for over a month.
P.S. I’ve been using Acronis for a long time now, but this cavalier attitude about updates and fixes is starting to get irritating. And some of their “fixes” to issues are not offered as an update, but as manual “tweaks”.
      Sad, otherwise I like it.
P.S. Only had to run “recovery” once – restored the cloned image but it was a long time ago, like in version 2011.
