AskWoody LoungerThanks for the suggestion, Rick 🙂
I’ll do that during the week (I only play with Linux in my spare time). I’ll post my findings here.

AskWoody Lounger@Paul: yes, I can ping the printer with no trouble. Since it’s accessed through its IP address and not by name, the DNS setting is irrelevant, but FYI I use the OpenDNS servers.
@Rick: the printer does not show as “paused” in the CUPS interface, and its print queue is empty. The error log only contains the following entries:
W [08/Apr/2015:15:41:54 +0200] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id ‘Canon-MF8300-UFRII-LT-Gray..’ already exists
W [08/Apr/2015:15:41:54 +0200] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id ‘Canon-MF8300-UFRII-LT-RGB..’ already exists
I will try understanding the other posts you gave a link to, and following their suggestions. I’ll report here later.Thank you both! 🙂

AskWoody LoungerThank you for the suggestion, Paul.
However, there’s a catch: both virtual machines have the exact same configuration, that is to say, the Virtual Box defaults for 64-bit Ubuntu, except I’ve given them more video RAM (128 MB) and more RAM (2 GB) than the default. Every other setting is the VB default. Both “machines” see the printer at its correct IP address.
I have tried the NAT and Bridge network configurations in both machines. The Mint installation prints normally in both cases. The Ubuntu installations sends the print jobs to never-never land in both cases…
Weird, isnt’t it?Thanks for any other pointers 🙂

AskWoody LoungerThanks, I’ll try that and report back. 🙂
Later: I updated Virtual Box, and the installation of Android x86 4.4 RC1 went like a charm. Again my thanks!

AskWoody LoungerI attempted to follow Fred’s instructions only to be foiled when I got to the point of “Installing Android -X86 to harddisk. At that point repeated attempts resulted in the same screen message that is shown in Alex post number 30 below.
There was no way to get to the point where I could create a new partition. I even removed the VirtualBox to start over but when I arrived at the point of installing Android to harddisk it failed again.
There must be something that I’m overlooking but I have no clue what it might be. Apparently from the lounge posts no one else has a clue either except to say that there are better ways to do it. Those do not help much.
Thanks to whomever is able and willing to offer a solution.
Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. Running host OS Windows 7 SP1 64-bit, virtualization enabled (Intel Core i5-2410M processor on an Asus X93SV laptop with 8 GB RAM). I’m quite experienced with running virtual machines (both Windows and Linux).
I followed Fred’s instructions to a T, to no avail. I even re-downloaded the Android-x86 ISO file (the very same build as described by Fred) in the case it got corrupted the first time, still no joy.
I’d welcome any suggestions, thanks.

AskWoody LoungerFYI, 3 years ago France added Internet access among the basic commodities along with water, electricity and land telephone. Strangely enough, sewer is not in the list.

AskWoody LoungerHello ~ Ms. Capen,
I too, am running the preview of win 8 in virtual box. I noticed you are doing the same, is it the real version or the preview?
I couldn’t find a way to buy/upgrade to win 8 pro, as advertised!? How did you do it?
Thanks for your information.
a subscriber to WS from the beginning. As far as I’m aware, you can’t upgrade from the preview version. If you wish to use the cheaper upgrade disk, you need to wipe your VM and install XP or Vista or Win7 on it, then upgrade to Win8

AskWoody LoungerMicrosoft is going down the same road as Apple : they don’t want you to use programs that didn’t come through the Windows Market, so they’re making it as difficult as they can. I wouldn’t be at all surprised that Windows 9 doesn’t support the destktop any longer. Fortunately, by the time this happens I’ll have retired and will be able to switch to Linux…

AskWoody LoungerI’ve just read Tracey’s comments on Windows 8 in the newsletter. While Win8 is undoubtedly a nice progress as far as the underlying OS is concerned (faster boot, fewer running processes, less demand on hardware resources, better networking, …) I agree that the user interface is definitely unpleasant and cumbersome for someone who, like me, has been using a GUI since Windows 3.x days, and a computer since punched cards and/or tape (I first used a computer in 1966). Using hover motions instead of the familiar Start button/menu combination will put off quite a few people, and having to learn a whole new environment is going to cost millions in retraining. The new start screen can be rearranged to one’s tastes, but there is no provision at all for 2nd- and higher-level tiles, whereas the Start menu could be organized into folders and sub-folders to reduce the jumble. The more apps you have pinned to the start screen, the more difficult it’s going to be to find anything specific without having to use the search facility. They may call it “modern” UI, but it is really reminiscent of AOL’s first graphical interface in the 1990’s…
