‘Save’ is probably not the word. Check the File | Export menu item and cruise thru the ‘File type’ combo box for a list of what you can export.

    • in reply to: Can Access do this #524890

Access is really good at massaging data, and is eminently suitable for the goal you have. OTOH, Excel is better at heavy calculations.

REalize that the move to Access will require ‘different thinking.’

    • in reply to: Address parsing #1782720

I would go with the Outlook style, simply because it is ‘well known’. Allow 3 lines for the ‘address’, and a line each for the city state zip.

Why bother parsing when the addressee _knows_ how it’s s’posed to look?

    • in reply to: Address parsing #1782716

      Hi Eddie –

If the address ‘fields’ are comma delimited, i assume there is no problem.

The problem is when the fields are unknown. One can make some educated guesses, but there are no guarantees. For example
123 main street anytown astate azip
      or
123 apple blossom lane SE apt a-1 name of the retirement village anytown astate azipplus4

      etc.

What kind of case are you dealing with?

    • in reply to: ? Open file then Search Text #524344

      Hi Mike –

      A couple of ideas:

Since you’re looking for text, it seems to me that using Word would be ‘easier’ than Access? Or run Word from Access?
Or import the dos file (does it have some kind of format?) with each ‘line’ as a single field of perhaps the memo type, and do a search in Access?

      good luck!

    • in reply to: What’s behind all those references? #523561

Found a great reference for what I am looking for: Access 2000 Developer’s Handbook Vol 1: Desktop Edition by Getz, Litwin, Gilbert.

    • in reply to: Dialog Box #523107

      Hi Roberta –

How about minimizing the chance for user error? Instead of letting her mistype a number, give her a lookup from which she can select a project (from a combobox, say).

    • in reply to: Import Specifications – saved where? #522868

      Thanks Charlotte!

Rather than importing ‘all of them’, it is possible to delete import specs, so if I follow the practice of experimenting with a throw-away database, i can tune the specs, jetison the losers, and import the one desired.

    • in reply to: Excel does this easily but not Access! #521992

I’d be interested in seeing your function.

FY is up to the individual/corporation. The ‘default’ is the calendar year, but one can declare it to be anything convenient. At the same time, ‘adjustments’ need be made to bring nay self-declared FY into alignment with the calendar.

    • in reply to: Excel does this easily but not Access! #521982

I was looking for the same capability this week for a one-time calculation.

I found it ‘in Access’ as the RunningSum property(?) of an expression in a Report.

    • in reply to: Importing dBase tables #521913

      A2k.

I’ve been importing the files as dBase IV files, having no clue as to what they really are. Neither does win2k; it says they are from an unknown application.

    • in reply to: HELP – How do I use Feet and Inches in my table #1781112

If you decide to do some thing different from what Legare suggested (3 textboxes), you will need to acquire an “arithmetic parser”, a piece of code that will read 1ft3-5/8in (with or without embedded spaces) and convert it properly. Perhaps make the third textbox 16ths?

    • in reply to: Text vs Numeric Field #520296

‘Rules of Thumb’ sounds like the title for a great book.

Or is there perhaps a website with this kind of info?

    • in reply to: Access 2000: a reasonable approach? #517253

Having done some more research, it seems to me that ‘partial replication’ is perfect for a report card system. It seems so obvious that i’m sure i’m not the first to think of it.

Is there an Access product already available off-the-shelf?

Or maybe i’m all wet and PR is NOT the way to go?
