This sounds like what happened to me the other day with A2K sr1 — just crazy kind of behavior. We used to call this the POTM syndrome (phase of the moon).

Yep, i have all permissions. A2K sp1. I am building the mdb from dbf files by normalizing the tables, so there should be no versioning problems at all. I am in complete control smile

It feels like something got ‘poisoned’ — an mdb opens fine, but when i try to look at various Modules it throws the Error accessing file msg.

I am going to write off that day’s work as a loss, and try to remember what i did. Meanwhile, I will check the Tools–>References

For me the scary part is: No front end, no back end, no network! Just a single database on my single machine. Let me mention that i have only been doing database work long enough to get into trouble smile.

I neglected to mention that i had tried to import most of the tables, queries, forms, and modules from one mdb to another. I am trying to normalize a dbf that is as flat as paint, and after trying one decomposition, i may discard it, and move on to another.

It was right after i imported everything that nothing worked (!?), and it seemed like nothing worked in the previous mdbs any more either, but that was at 130am, so i will regroup and try to think thru this again.

Perhaps the names of the modules has to match the name of the database???

One anomaly: I import the modules, and then use the builder in a query. The builder cannot find any functions in the module, which is why i think there is some kind of a naming problem.

‘fun’ has to be interpreted by everyone involved as ‘fair’. Otherwise, you run the risk of a game perceived to be ‘fixed.’

Perhaps an array of integers from 1..211, in random order is fun enough, and guaranteed that everyone wins over ~4 years, which is imminently fair.

I’ve done some work with random numbers, and there is some material on my website relating thereto. The majority of my use is for modeling physical properties, rather than ‘people.’

However, if you want to be fair, then the only fair distribution of prizes is to list all of your members, and choose them each in turn.

    • THAT was easy!

      Thanks Charlotte

      Bingo!

I forgot that i had installed IE6 to overcome a bug in Frontpage 02.

      Nice catch.

    • in reply to: 2002 interferes with IE5 #529518

“Solution:” Download and install IE6 beta. On my puny 56K line, this takes about an hour, but i didnt hang around waiting, I went to the pool. joy

More problems … the installer cant find data1.msi on my MSO 2k premium CD.

To overcome this, i opened the MSO 2k CD in windows explorer, found data1.msi, and copied it to the ‘desktop’. When the installer (for the 3rd time) said it could not find data1.msi, i browsed to my desktop and showed the installer where it was.

This install did not go as smoothly as the first, but it seems to be working.

    • in reply to: Front Page 2002 (XP) #529468

yes the eula says that, and i am trying to install to my laptop even as i write this. The installer is having trouble finding the data for the office install…

i can see another problem when i replace my desktop machine, which i hope to do in a couple of months. I suppose i will have to deactivate (is that even possible?) the desktop copy, install FP2k on the new machine, and then upgrade again.

      What a pain.

Just installed FrontPage 2002, simultaneously deleting FrontPage 2k (what the heck

    • in reply to: Help with Query #1783857

Thanks – I tried that, it worked.

Then, i decided to try to select the MAX value (to check my minimal knowledge). I changed min() to max()in the grid, but the query didnt ‘work’ because the Sort has to be DESC when max is employed, and neither the query design view, nor the property view, changed the SQL statement.

Now i know a little more about what to look for – thanks again.

    • in reply to: Help with Query #1783852

Hi Charlotte – is there any way to write the query by ‘clicking’ this up in Access, or must the statement be written in SQL?

    • in reply to: Help with Query #1783845

Does an ascending sort on the Time Remaining field get you there?

    • in reply to: Can Access do this #524903

“Now you will learn why it is better to sometimes keep you knowledge to yourself.” I aint goin nowheres innocent

“I think I have seen some of what you say about different thinking. But could you please explain [just in case I am in my wrong mind];-)”

Excel ‘thinking’ is what i would call ‘straight-forward’. Plug in a bunch of numbers and calculate!

Access ‘thinking’ is based on set theory. When you build a database, you need to think how the various tables will interact. I find that to be a different way to think. Neither harder nor easier, just different.

“Is this something that a novice should not even consider undertaking? I have been able to create simple queries and tables but have not had much experience with Access in more elaborate setups.” <<< GO FOR IT! cheers
