      Thanks, I hadn’t seen this.
Followed the instructions at the bottom of that thread. Windows had a bit of whinge about a file being deleted, then it’s business as normal.

Once you are logged in, go to the ‘Dashboard’ and you’ll find a raft of statistics there.
If you have OpenDNS configured at the router (which is more secure), then the statistics are for your whole network.
If you have it configured at each PC or device, then the stats apply to that device.

Thanks. I’m not sure what the difference is between running as administrator, and ‘full’ administrator rights, but I’m not sure if MS knows either… there’s plenty of variation on how programs do this.
Bizarrely, I was logged as admin, and was able to create the file in a sub directory, and then move it to the root directory using normally started non-full-admin Explorer. Anyway, my needs are now met. Thanks all.

Ha-ha, I always crack myself up when I attempt anything resembling code…don’t laugh, at least not to where I can hear you
Any help greatly appreciated as always.

Just for feedback, (although it’s a bit late), but I find it easier to have field names that don’t have any spaces – makes them easier to work with.

    • in reply to: defrag 3rd party tool or not #1289075

If you want to see a notable performance increase then move to an SSD based system.

just a reminder that you should NOT defrag an SSD :o:

    • in reply to: Advanced file permissions – Deny Delete not working #1289064

      Hmmm. Thanks.
Mine’s pretty similar, but the default ‘ticked’ and ‘greyed’ boxes are different.
I suspect it’s something that the Administrator of the network must have set.
I’ll contact them to see if I can sort it out.

Do make sure that it’s the right way around. I’ve had times where the inside connector has got bent from (me!) pushing it too hard the wrong way. Put my glasses on, use a fine tool to bend it (carefully!) back and all is well.

Not sure if this is the whole problem, but ‘IsNull’ is a function, not a value.
      So you need
      If IsNull([Refill Req]) Then

Note that Null is a weird thing – this gives no errors but doesn’t work:
If [Refill Req] = Null Then

Thanks. That website doesn’t give me any real information.
I keep finding conflicting information. For example:
Looking just at Raw Read Error Rate, my HD is Current 100, Worst 100, Threshold 46, Status Ok.
So wikipedia says that lower is better. In which case 100 sounds bad, it’s miles above the threshold, but the Status says Ok. That doesn’t make sense.
But then ariolic says that “Lower values indicate that there is a problem”. In which case I’m OK.
But then this page says ” If the Value has reached and OVER this threshold value, with very high probability the harddisk is in trouble”.
This page does make a little sense with “More errors (i.e. lower attribute value) means worse condition of disk surface”
I can’t find any authoritative information – does any one know where I could find that?

    • in reply to: SSD and UEFI – is it worth the investment / risk? #1281957

I’m not usually an early adopter, but I’ve got a nearly 2-year-old system with an Intel 80Gb system drive, and I love it. Still blazingly fast. Not one problem (I still do my backups, though!).
      Peter

    • FWIW, I put my Win7 64-bit with Intel SSD system drive to sleep every time over the last 2 years, with not one problem.

    • in reply to: Inside-family hacking job — how to block #1281698

I agree with the ‘they will find a way around’, but a router-level filter (such as http://opendns.org has nothing to do with the PC, so a linux boot disk still has to get out to the internet, and opendns will block it then.
They could use some other network, but if they are going to that length you’ve got bigger troubles.
I still think opendns (or similar) should be set up on just about everyone’s router. It (probably) faster than your ISP’s DNS, it provides phishing protection, and you get to choose how much (or how little) filtering gets done. And it’s free.
(I’m not affiliated with them, and don’t get paid for this!)

I highly recommend http://opendns.org for filtering your whole network. It’s best set up at the router (choose a strong password on your router!), and then it covers your wired network, and also any WiFi devices, such as iPod touch etc.
