Did you try open and repair on your file? If Word finds a problem and repairs it (a broken bookmark perhaps?) your problems may be over.

Sometimes Word will repair the file but doesn’t get rid of the real cause of the problem. If that happens and if Word found problems with bookmarks, try deleting all the hidden TOC bookmarks and then updating (regenerating) your TOC–on a copy of your file, please. I don’t have a macro to delete hidden bookmarks and I’ve never had enough of them to want to make one. But I’d bet someone on this list has one. On the other hand, if Word identified a problem styles, look for a char char style, particularly one that is linked to a heading style.

There are two ways to insert page numbers in Word–through the insert menu and through the header /footer toolbar; and newbies sometimes use both. A page number field inserted through the insert menu is inside a frame; the one inserted through header/footer toolbar is not. And you can have both on the same page.

First I would search for and delete all page fields within frames. Then I’d step through each footer and make sure that the footer text is as wanted (including page no.), that the same as previous is appropriate, and that the page break type is correct.

      Good luck,

Brilliant! Thank you, Stuart. I’m adding your suggestion to my bag of tricks.

You are welcome. I hope the info helped fix your problem text box.

It is often more reliable to adjust text boxes, frames, and floating table positions via the dialogs instead by dragging them. In the format text box, Layout tab, Advanced dialog, set the horizontal and vertical positions relative to the page to 0. Also, on the Size tab, set the size to the size of your paper.

And after you get the result you want–using either of the methods suggested–update the TOC 2 style so that your change will stick when you regenerate the TOC. I do this from the Wondows 2003 & 2007 Styles task pane like so: with my cursor on a properly formatted paragraph, I click the arrow to the right of style TOC 2 and select Update to match selection.

BTW, what you did in modifying the TOC2 style was the right approach, but you must have accidentally deleted the right-align tab (at 6.49″). That’s why the numbers no longer aligned. So yet another approach is to put that tab back in –& for good measure, clear the automatically update box in the modify style dialog.

Your number 3 does not work the same for me. Instead, double clicking an Office file (or using Open in the shortcut menu) will open the file in either the application already running or the last version that was run. It has worked this way for the past few years on some of my clients’ computers, and it works this way on my computer now.

I find this behavior very convenient, as I often have several documents that I need to work on in one particular version. Starting from Explorer is more convenient for me, and it is easier to track my progress through multifile jobs in Explorer.
Note: I can be working on Word 2003 and Excel 2007 at the same time. –I have deliberately avoided even trying to use two version of the same application at once.

You might want to look into Cambria Math. It’s new for Office 2007 but also comes in Microsoft’s free compatibility pack (or some such name) for use in older versions of Office. Cambria Math seems to have most of the spacing characters you want.

BTW, the equation feature in Word 2007 is brand new and based on TeX. I wouldn’t necessarily change to 2007 for your current project, but it may be worth checking out for future jobs: (Equations in Word 2007)

I hadn’t seen StuartR’s post before I posted. And obviously I didn’t carefully read the OP’s request. I apologize for that.

      Cheers,

Use a Shift-Return, or, in your case, maybe two Shift-Returns instead of a regular Return between paragraphs. Note the this will not work if, in the compatibility options, you have instructed Word to NOT justify lines ending in Shift-Return.

Aha. “If so, how can I access to delete these comments.”

Are they comments and not insertion and deletions (tracked changes)? And are you printing Document showing markup (tracked changes and comments) instead of Document? If so, from the reviewing tool bar, click the down arrow next to the red X and choose delete all comments in document.

    • in reply to: WOPR Workbar (Office 2007) #1078438

I can’t help you with WOPR, but I can tell you that doc names in Word2007’s recent documents list can be pinned to the list by clicking the icon to the right of the name. Word will keep it in the list until it is unpinned it. This works in other Office apps too.

This was a head game for me since I’ve done one page like this but not four , and I’m sure others who have done something similar it will have refinements, but try this. Capture each background page as a separate image; set the images to be behind the text. Divide the main document into 4 page length sections with the headers set to NOT same as previous. Insert the background images into the headers of each page. I would do this only at the end of the doc prep cycle, as too many revisions could require manually moving text around the section breaks in your main doc.

Edited by WyllyWylly to make URL clickable

That’s odd. I’ve always had Mozilla products and less often Opera as my default browser while also having IE available, and the installations have never deleted other programs.

If you have access to the program files folder, look there for the Internet Explorer folder and explorer.exe. Right click on explorer.exe and choose send to desktop. If the folder and executable are not there, download and install the latest version of Explorer.

Also, you can get information here for installing Shockwave as a plug-in to Fire fox: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/firefox-windows.html%5B/url%5D.

    • in reply to: Phantom Char Char style (2002) #1071450

Sorry it didn’t work out. Did you also delete the default paragraph font style and any other style that has misbehaved? I usually repair the file after deleting the char styles and the default paragraph font. Though I have sometimes had to delete again and repair it again. (I usually open and repair until I get no errors, anyway.) Also, make sure that the bad styles have not gotten into your normal.dot.

      Regards,
      Pam
