Just to clarify: I’ve been following your thread on the language issue and thought you said earlier that you set your Language to English (Canadian)? – but that if you changed the language to English (United States) your spell checker worked fine.
This document opened with English set to United States. The document is based on “normal.dot”. My normal.dot is set for English (Canadian). The examples of “Teh” – even though I had said “Change All” kept stopping on errors of “Teh” and “teh”.

You have to open the template (file, open) and do your editing there, as you probably are aware.
Are you on a network where others may be using your templates as well? I’ve had the experience of trying to edit our firm’s templates and not being able to get it because others in the firm are using it.
If the template is not available to you, or it is “read only” it may be that others are currently using the template and you will have to wait until it is not in use (some company’s/firms have software that can boot people out of a document or template they need urgently)!
If necessary you could do your editing in “document 1” then do a Save As and save as document 1 as a new template- delete the old one later or when no one is using it.

      Hi John,
Didn’t get a chance to check Word 2000 but I did check all of your suggested experiments in W97. Each time the word “familyar/familyer” was changed throughout the document.
I did have occasion to search MSKB & a couple of other sites today for info on saving Word2000 down to a Word 6.0 document (a nightmare waiting to happen, methinks. But the “other side” has decreed that this should happen).
Anyway came across the following text at a Q&A site – sorry I didn’t get that url but here’s one that lists the (many) fixes for Word 2000 in SR1&1-A

Hi John. Nope! You’re not going mad.I just duplicated your problem. If I do Alt+Shif+D I get the date regardless of language setting. However,if I try to use the style “Date” I’m dead in the water. I’m guessing that since this style is one shipped with Word then it’s ‘hard-coded’ into Word. In other words [no pun intended!] you would have to create a NEW style, based on “Date” and then modify it to suit your Cdn style. However I haven’t tested this out.

Yes, frustrating situation. However, when you go to insert, Date, if you do not want the date to automatically update, do NOT check off that item. In other words, whatever date you put in remains.

Hi Charles! What version of Word are you on? NT or standalone?

I admit I have not read the entirethread so maybe you’ve had this already

    • in reply to: A Canadian can’t get a date #514414

If I type “Febr” I get “February”. If I type “February” in full I get the date “February 12, 2001” popping up & enter to auto complete. I should mention that I am using English (Canadian). Just a thought: check Tools, Options, then click on the Spelling & Grammar tab to see if anything is unchecked that should be checked in order to auto-complete to work for you?

On the off-chance this may help … on my office pc I had made a typo to user name when installing Word 2000. I was able to change it by going to (I think) Tools, Options, User Information[I’m going on memory as I have Word97SR2 at home)

    • in reply to: A Canadian can’t get a date #514336

I experimented using the various date formats – Insert Date and Time, then clicked on “default” -which allows you to set your chosen default for date and time and it works for me no matter which option I choose (Word 97-aka 97 with patches =Word 8). I should mention I’m on a standalone pc (that is, not networked so I have the option of deciding which formats I prefer although I am able to make the same choices at work where I’m on WIN(95) NT on 400+ user network). HTH

Never occurred to me the drive could be going bad! I hope not – otherwise I’ll really need an assist from the Lottery Gods.

Yes – I use NAV. I have Version 5.00 01C and did the Live Update thing yesterday. Thanks – I appreciate the input.

Thanks to all who replied with a wealth of information – now I just have to digest it!

Thanks! That makes very good sense. I’ll be shutting down a lot more often now. BTW I do have Win98 (SE2)and I often wish I stayed with 95. It may be coincidental but I’ve had a lot of grief since I had Win98 installed.

Thanks for answering, Lief. No, I don’t power down at night (unless I know the power is going to be shut down for seeming endless electrical repairs in my condo). I often leave it on for several days. More often, though, I will power down in the a.m. before going to work.
This morning I reset the clock around 9 am. Currently the pc time indicates 5:16 pm Central Ontario Time – but it is really 5:40 p.m. So on average I guess it loses 25 min-1/2 hr per day.
