    • in reply to: Win10Pro64 Shortcut Problems #1529099

JoeP: Build is final Win 10 rtm. Icons are established by going to the .exe file of a program, right clicking, and hitting create shortcut. Icon thus made has the correct path, etc. At the next reboot, the icon is stripped of the path info, the icon image is blank, and clicking the icon has no effect. I delete the corrupted icon, reestablish a new one, and the same thing happens ad infinitum. On the url icons, I copy the url from the page I want, go to the desktop, right click a vacant space and click New Shortcut. Paste the url to the first screen, name the icon on the second screen, and execute. After a random reboot (doesn’t happen every time), the url path will be deleted from the icon. This corruption does not happen to every program and/or url icon, but randomly after a given reboot. It obviously is not a fatal problem, more a royal p-i-t-a. BTW, have run AV and malware AMW scans with negative results.

    • in reply to: Password managers can let you down #1442499

Just wanted to put in a word for Roboform, which I have used for many years. As with Keepass, it has many features which allow it to accommodate various situations. I regularly backup my Roboform database locally and (encrypted) on a cloud server, and I keep the database on a flashdrive with a “to-go” app. Keepass is undoubtedly a fine password manager, but there are others.

I had the same basic problem for some time. Tried this solution and it worked for me. Interesting thing about it is the statement that: “It has come to our attention at there has been a recent explosion of people reporting corruptions with the CNBJ2530.DPB file in Windows 8 and 8.1.”

    • in reply to: Pre-encryption makes cloud-based storage safer #1440220

BoxCryptor’s free version only covers one device, but they have a paid personal version which allows multiple devices to join in syncing with multiple cloud services. So there is portability of the encryption across multiple devices. At least in the paid versions.

Due to this and other value-added features, the business edition of BoxCryptor is sutiable for business collaboration environments.

Ditto in my experience. Only Dropbox is supported in the free version. Since I run Win8.1 w/SkyDrive, it is useless. But that in no way decreases the value of the basic article, only the free BoxCryptor aspect.

    • in reply to: Page Fault error When Trying to Restart Win8 64bit Pro #1376473

To recap: Ran sfc /scannow – no problems, disabled Fast Start, ran the Win 8 Mem Tester with no problems, ran all the Dell diagnostics I could find – no problems. At last restart, it booted normally. Perhaps disabling Fast Start did the trick, but who knows.

Thank you to all who posted suggestions.

Thanks, Bill, for your post. I think I understand your second para – which is why I am puzzled by the problem I’m having which stems from a “Restart” command. Yet the reliability log states “Shut down unexpectedly”, like I would expect if I just flipped off the power switch (something early experience trained me to never do). I am on a Dell XPS 8500, and I think I remember that when I switched to Win8, there was something from Dell about the fast start option having to be disabled. Hmmm…wonder how I find out if it really is. – I’ll figure that out.

Ran sfc /scannow with zero problems found. Will cut a new system image, new restore point, and run the Win8 mem tester. Hope that helps!

The suggestion regarding the wipe pagefile registry entry solved a problem which has been with me for many moons. Would you believe reducing shutdown time from 4 – 6 minutes to just a smig over 1 minute? Tis true for me. Thanks Fred.

    • in reply to: Backup error – bad sector on hard drive #1316054

I had the same problem tonight – Acronis TI Home 2012. My reading of the error message was that Acronis could not read from the sector, but I am frequently wrong. However, this is the second time Acronis has let me down – different drives involved. I think I’m going to junk all the on-machine backup programs and go to Carbonite.

I’m having the same problem with Google Chrome. IE9 is no problem, but if Chrome is default, links will not work.

Enjoyed the column. When I visited TechNet, the page that contained the download for Robocopy mentioned an even better tool – RichCopy. You might consider an addendum in the next Win Secrets.
