    • in reply to: Restoring OS image from external drive #1329814

The only problem here would be if the HD itself goes bad. This is why it is so important to have an Image external to the HD as well. As Clint states boot to the Macrium Boot disk, and access your Image to restore from there. The restoration of the OS should occur from outside the OS. At least this is how I restore from Acronis. I know Dick, Acronis does not work for you.

He states that he has images on BOTH a 2nd internal drive as well as the external drive which is good. The restoration if done from an internal drive would normally be easier and faster. The image on the external drive to be used in the event of internal disk failure.

      Interesting.

You MAY be able to get the boot order you wish by going into your BIOS settings with your external drive attached.

If you have an image on drive D or whatever on your 2nd internal drive, you should be able to use that to restore from easier than from your external drive. But in any event in order to boot you need to have a boot disk for whatever Image program you are using – probably Macrium. If you are still able to boot to C Drive, you should go to Macrium in Programs and create such a disk.

ADrive offers 50GB of free storage for individual non commercial use. This is much more than either Dropbox or SpiderOak. The downside is that the free service does not use ftp.

I, too, tried using Fred’s article to create an image and got to the point where I received an error notice – something about a shadow image or some such. Thus I’ll stick to Macrium Reflect or Paragon Backup and Recovery 2011, both of which are free.

You may be able to create your own Windows 7 installation DVD from this:

If you need the iso file try one of these:

I have been using the free http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ to easily use two different OS at one time. Try it.

      Thanks…

I also noticed with the free version you can’t have the restore option in your boot menu. That’s only available in the paid version.

I was browsing their forum earlier and only people that bought it are allowed to register there…
Kinda strange to have that condition…

      Anyway, thanks again..

But with the free version you can do a restore using the Macrium Boot disk.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 – Should you install? #1268808

      Hi Joe, thanks . . .
Yes to all except I didn’t disable my A/V, but I’ve not done this in the past and never had problems before with other updates. I used the Windows update by the way which came through as usual. One other thing, the m/s tech also told me that this was a release candidate version, but there was no inference to this on the download.

I discovered after several hours of trying that turning off my Avast av and installing from the saved file allowed the installation to complete successfully.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 SP-1 Failure 0x800f900 #1268806

I also failed in installing sp1. My error is 0x800f900. I ran the system update readiness tool and it found nothing. I checked the log and it said something about KB979916 which was a Net framework update by I can’t find it in windows update to uninstall. I tried to install it again and it said already installed. Jeff

I got the same error repeatedly, but after turning off my Avast av the installation completed successfully.

    • in reply to: Win 7 Service Pack 1 install failure #1268805

I to had a problem installing sp1 32 bit. I got error 0x800f0900. I installed system readiness tool and it found no errors. When I checked the log it listed KB979916 as a possible problem which is net frame sp2. It is not listed in the uninstall but it is installed. I cannot find how to uninstall it. I disabled antivirus and firewall and tried several times still same error. Jeff

I got the same error several times, but after turning off my Avast av the install completed successfully.

    • in reply to: Cannot run or re-install Win 7 BSOD everytime #1263658

What happens if you boot to Ubuntu and then partition your hard drive and create an NTFS partition? With this new NTFS partition can you use an Acronis imaage to restore Windows to the new partition? You may need to reinstall Ubuntu in order to get Grub to recognize and allow booting to the new Windows partition.

    • in reply to: Data Drive (F) not accesble on the home network #1258657

      Thank you. That solves it.

My F Drive is data only and thus I don’t consider it a security risk to have that accessible over my home network.
