    • in reply to: Windows 10 Anniversary Update arrives — slowly #1573953

I was reading the Windows Secrets newsletter today and saw the link to the update, so ran the process, took about 2 hours without any interruption or participation on my part. Done a final reboot and came up to my normal login screen. I reset the privacy settings and allowed the Flash Player to work. It is on there, just has to be turned on. I will activate Defender later tonight. I haven’t tried my Brother printer yet, do that tomorrow. I don’t think Edge will accept my RoboForm password saver and yes I know there is another one free, but I have no desire to change 300+ passwords. Some I am a happy camper for the moment at least.

Sorry, I found the freeze panes in view. I am 81 and things don’t compute as well anymore. I appreciate all the help.

Another quick question on Excel 13. I keep forgetting some of the simple stuff. I want to freeze a header so when I scroll down the page the header stays in place. I can’t find this in help

Zeddy, the row height didn’t help, but I found that I had a filter on, and when I cleared that, then all was well. Sometimes solutions are in front of us and we just can’t see them, for me at least.
      Thanks

    • in reply to: MP3 files in Windows 10 to IPad #1544831

I haven’t been able to get Drive to work like you described yet, but will keep working with it. For the moment, I just attach 2 or 3 files from Drive to an email and that goes alright. I shall persevere.
      Thanks

I have one question, although I guess I won’t know until she tries the upload, whether she has to have a log in. We are on a home network, but I have never been able to see her IPad, nor can she see my laptop. The network works well as far as the internet is concerned. i have set up a Home network, but something seems to be missing in the process.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 perfect at first, now slow #1541245

Patrick, I just went through the slow down thing and I found that the big upgrade of Windows 10 didn’t install properly and therefore, nothing worked quite right, including slow downs in page loading, or net pages. I normally use FireFox, but I tried using IE and Edge and all had problems. I got tired of trying to fix it and because I have a service contract with Best Buy, I took it in and told them to fix it. And basically it was the upgrade, the redid it and now everything works well. You might want to look at that.

Paul, Firefox is the only thing that is drawing more than 5%. I am not clear on how to interpret the varying uses percentage or the Mbs at any given moment. The CPU is about 39% and Memory is about 54%.

      You might try the following…

      1. Run CHKDSK

      2. In Safe Mode, run SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated Command Prompt. Here’s how to get into Safe Mode in Windows 10…

      http://www.pcworld.com/article/2984712/windows/how-to-enter-windows-10s-safe-mode.html

      3. Download and run the Windows Repair tool at Tweaking.com.

Note: It is not the big green button at the top.

You will see Download buttons for Direct Download and Mirror @ MajorGeeks.com

      4. Do a repair with an in-place upgrade of build 1511.

      5. Do a clean install.

Thanks for this JW. I will try this in the morning, have too much working tonight to try this.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 upgrade , very slow #1540704

      Right now, CPU 45%,
      Utilization 55%
      Speed 2.37 Ghz
Toshiba laptopt, Windows 10 with last upgrade, 8 GB ram
      SFC won’t run
Yes I have data backups from before, no full disc backup. I have IDrive that is supposed to be doing that but isn’t. I will ask about that in a separate post.
Upgraded to Windows 10 in September from 8.1 because I had it in the shop for other issues. It has worked well until this upgrade.
I have rebooted numerous time in the last week, I shut down every night.

That is what I kept overlooking. Thank you. I knew it had to be simple. I have had a hard time learning 13 after having XP, but I will get there eventually.

    • in reply to: IDrive, Windows 8.1, Toshiba laptop #1522943

mrjim, I think you are probably right, that is about where I am now. I will try again on Monday to get them on the phone. Actually my biggest concern right now is, where are my files and can I get them deleted off their server, where ever that my be. They send me and email report that says how many files were backed up today, but not informative at all. I need to get in touch with the guy who recommended this.

    • in reply to: Windows 8.1 boot this morning #1518231

That is the strange part, there is no other account on this computer.

    • in reply to: Google Drive #1516880

That appears to be more enterprise related. They ask for a company name specifically. I have gave up on Drive for now. If I can’t trust it to back up as expected, then it is of no value. I am going to get an external harddrive and just use it to backup once a day. Not sure if software comes with that or not. I am presently using flash drives and having good luck with that, have had to do one restore and good results.
