AskWoody LoungerI don’t think DFS will do that, I think DFS is going to try to replicate your files, which isn’t close to what you want to do. IMO, I think you’d be best served to move everything to the new server, or look at establishing a server solely for file storage and print purposes.

AskWoody LoungerCould you not do nearly the same thing with a folder of shortcuts? Maybe it takes two extra clicks, but I’d rather click twice than spend $20.

AskWoody LoungerJoe, I also remember the complaints of ‘ye olde memory hog XP’, and I wasn’t nearly as exposed to computers as I am now. I honestly appreciate your advice and will probably go with the Home Premium (for now). It’s nice to see someone with good things to say about Vista.
As far as laptops only supporting 1gb, I haven’t seen any mid to high range (and I consider the one I’m choosing to be at the high end of the lower spectrum) that couldn’t be upgraded to 4. I believe this sort of became an industry standard near the release of Vista.

AskWoody LoungerMy main worry with XP was actually if anything wouldn’t work in XP, not Vista. I know Vista’s advanced by leaps and bounds, but I didn’t know if OEM machines were tailored to OS’s in any way. 2GB ram isn’t expensive, and price wasn’t the major deciding factor in the purchase of this machine.

AskWoody LoungerAs an FYI, Microsoft Office can’t handle more than 255 characters. (I learned this when a coworker couldn’t play networked videos in a powerpoint presentation).

AskWoody LoungerDo you think trying to buy XP (since it’s not an OEM option on the site) and installing it on my own is worth it? Can you foresee any driver related issues or otherwise?

Or forget about IE and move to Firefox from here

Amen. I’ve kept IE on my computer simply because everything Microsoft requires it, but FF and Opera are both nice, and FF has a plugin to allow you to view IE specific sites.
