That mobo upgrade might not be a bad idea either way!

What about a scheduled task to backup the database at intervals? You could also program the database to copy the backend, say, as soon as it’s opened?

Did copying query.exe work? Albeit late in the game, had you thought about sharing the folder the executables were stored in, and referencing the shared folder in your BATch file?

When you boot, put your hand on the hdd (or listen intently), can you feel/hear the disk spin up? That will rule out the power supply for you. When you attempted to hook up the new usb bay, was everything unplugged/powered off/grounded?

Well, power supplies and hard drives aren’t very expensive, perhaps you could get working ones and use the entire setup as a training aid? smile

    • in reply to: Installers Hall of Shame #1131173

In my few short years as a SysAdmin, I’ve run across many of them, and they really *are* a pain when trying to install just the software you want across a network. On more than one instance, I had to bite the bullet, install all, and then go back and uninstall the added “features” later. bummer

Can clients on the same switch ping each other? What are the results of tracert when trying to ping? You’re sure the option on the advanced tab of win firewall says ‘Allow incoming echo request’? I’m not trying to doubt you, just trying to eliminate as much as possible. Are you trying to ping computer name, or IP? Also, what kind of switches are you using?

      Edit to add more questions:

      1) Have all of the computers been joined to the domain?
      2) Is there a group policy for the administrators group so you have a domain admin account that you can log on to EVERY computer with?
      3) Are you logging on to the clients locally, or with a domain user account (preferrably domain admin)?

In short, yes, fans should turn on. Is there a fan ON your power supply? Does that turn on?

    • in reply to: Power Problem #1130989

Your local hardware store for a new power supply grin

Most likely your power supply went kaputz, luckily, they’re pretty cheap. Heck, you might be able to go to a pawn shop and get a whole new e-machine for about $50. Are there any other indicator lights on your motherboard/computer? I know the back of most dells have 4 LEDs that will display different colors to indicate specific errors, but I’m not sure that e-Machines do.

    • in reply to: router & internet speed #1130987

If you really want to have as free-flowing of traffic as possible, you can shut off any firewall that’s on your router’s firmware (though not really recommended, if you’re not wireless, it’s a bit of a non-issue). You could also use in the built in virtual server to port-forward for your specific applications while leaving your firewall in place.

I was going to say, I thought on the server you can set the timeout for RDP sessions.

A dirty fix would be to put the R on the report superscripted, and toggle the text box’s visible property depending on the record. Just my 2c.

So you don’t want the workstation to lock….ever?
