Not sure if this is related, but on occasion, I will get multiple copies of the same images from some of my email contacts.
Sometimes up to 5 or more copies of the same jpg image in a single email.
This may be related to the number of times the email has be “forwarded” prior to me recieving a copy.

Yes Clint, that is quite common. I think it has something to do with the way the e-mail copies and forwards the pics. Maybe somebody has an accurate explanation as to why this phenomenon happens.

    • in reply to: E-mail and pics #1242347

It gets more interesting. Recently I forwarded an e-mail with embedded graphics to about a dozen people. All but one received without problem. The one was using G-mail. It told him it was a zip file but without the suffix (.zip) attached. Go figure.

    • in reply to: Win 7 God Mode: Control Panel on Steroids #1241428

I could not believe all the Control Panel features when I enabled this. I may not keep it because I generally set up something similar to Clint as a toolbar on the taskbar and place commonly used apps there. I just thought it interesting all that is available through this method. Much more easily found than looking through Control Panel in the normal method. There seem to be too many different buttons to explore to find all the options. I did realize it has been mentioned previously, but not discussed in any detail. I also thought that perhaps the troubleshooting (T/S) area may help a couple of recent questions to a solution. Worth a try anyway.

I have to agree, this is much cleaner look and easier to find a particular Control Panel item.

My I suggest Windows Ultimate Tweaker? It gives you the option to remove the shortcut arrow without you having to go in and play with the registry. Plus it has lots of option that you can easily change back and and forth with.

I have absolutely no problem with that but I did notice something that is different…you are using Microsoft Sky Drive. I’ll bet it has something to do with that! When you’re saving to your folder, is the file being also saved to the online storage site as well? If so, this is your problem! Probably some response from it that if no input is received for X amount of time, a reset to default occurs. Almost willing to bet that’s what it is! Excuse me, but online storage is way to risky for my liking! You are dependent upon executives to maintain ethics and not go into your stuff and take what they please. Current trends in Corporate America have tended to convince me that none of them have ethics anymore! I keep everything on my local drives behind my firewall and my security. Nope, no online storage for me, not ever! Seriously you are just asking for trouble doing that!

      Hi Al,

First, to answer your thoughts about Sky Drive and my problem. I only copy the photo’s to Sky Drive periodically, not automatically or at the same time. The problem is independent. The Sky Drive has no link other than a copy and paste action. But it was a good thought.

Secondly, I agree completely with your assessment of of online storage. In my case the pics are only of a re-modeling job of my bathroom that I’m sharing with friends as I proceed. The pics have no importance and are not revealing of any personal information. If they are lost or “used”, no problem. But I think you policy of keeping everything on an “in house” level behind a firewall is smart. I do the same for other computer material.

I guess I misunderstood your problem. The symptoms you are describing are very strange. Has this been going on for a while or did it just start? Any recent updates? This does not sound like virus activity, but who knows.

it sounds to me as though there is some kind of refresh going on which is affecting the folder view. This may be viral related, but I do wonder if it’s some other software. Have you started using some sort of photo cataloging software recently that might be interacting with the folder while you are working on it? Are you using third party software to download inages from the camera to the folder, and is this still running when you have the problem?

I’m virus free, and no I’m not using any other program to transfer the pics from camera to desktop other than the context menu that ask how I want to open the file folder when I plug the camera in. It only happens on this particular file folder. Never happens in any other folder or media such as my back-up on another external hard drive or the Microsoft Live Sky Drive. I guess I’ll have to take the suggestion of transferring the files to a new folder and eliminate the offending folder. It’s just a strange phenomenon and I was hoping someone else might have experienced similar problem and have a solution. But if you guys don’t have an answer then I don’t think anybody can solve this one.

      Norm,
Have you tried using the mouse to insert the cursor in the highlighted name field instead of the keyboard arrow keys?

      Jerry,

Yes, I think I’ve tried every conceivable method. It’s weird.

    • in reply to: Picture file renaming #1241170

On my machines the full name has always defaulted as selected, and one must then left click where the edit needs to be done.

I believe whole name highlighting is the default behavior in Win 7 although the extension does not highlight as it did in XP. This can be a time saver for me as I usually change the entire name because the default naming convention with my Nikon digital leaves a lot to be desired.

      Dave, Ted,

Perhaps you mis-understand my dilemma. Whole name highlighting is normal but I should be able to use my right or left arrow key for instance and get out of whole name highlighting and add or change individual characters within the name. However, as I do this, it reverts back to whole name highlighting within 1 or 2 seconds.

If you do decide to take it in, I would look for a local independent shop or Microcenter if you have one nearby. Best Buy’s Geek Squad is expensive and there have been many horror stories about unnecessary repairs, privacy violations, and lost computers.

      Jerry

I have to agree with you on this one. I was involved with a horror story about GEEK SQUAD. Let me bore with the details.
A co-worker happened to mention to me that he took his fairly new computer back to BB (GEEK SQUAD) to solve a problem. They told him his hard drive was cooked and needed replacement. They then charged him some large amount of money for that diagnosis to be put towards an even larger amount to replace the drive and OS. He declined until he could gather the money. I asked to let me see the computer. I did a full diagnosis and hard drive test. No problem with it. I then proceeded to fix the very minor problem he had ( I don’t recall the problem now) to put the machine in a like new condition without loss of data. Cost to him for my work? One 6 pack of imported Polish beer. He then asked if I would write a repair / diagnostic report and sign it, so he could go back to GEEK SQUAD to get a refund. I did. When he showed the clerk the report they denied a refund. He demanded to see the manager and loudly protest their policy and demanded to see the diagnostic report they did to his machine to prove a faulty hard drive. In the meantime a crowd started to gather around to hear the commotion. After reading my report showing that they did nothing to his machine and my full blown diagnostic and then threatening to report the store to the Attorney General Office they relented. As they handed him his refund they had the nerve to say they would give him a free system diagnostic to check my work!

      Jerry, Ted, Tim,

Yes, I did try removing the battery and running the computer. Same results. And did advise my friend the suggestions as you all did about trying to get a loner power supply to test the unit.
I think this is one of those instances where you have to bite the bullet and let Dell have their way with you. Too bad the unit is only 2 years old and the friends kid needs it for school by months end.

Thanks guys for the good try.

Actually on windows there are only 6 HALs if I understand correctly. There is a possibility that you actually matched from the old to the new.

At the risk of becoming tedious, here is some more reading….

      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694

      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

      Mercyh,

Yes, you did make the explanation understandable. I did glance at the two links you gave but did not look at them in detail. I’ll keep them for future reference.
So the long and short of this is I can clone an OS to different hardware if my current system goes south, but I will need to call MS and hopefully get them to give me another activation. If Acronis can do this then I’m sold!

    • in reply to: Free imaging software #1236892

And that is exactly what the plus pack is supposed to add, the capability to restore to dissimilar hardware. The whole issue with windows in doing this is the HAL the plus pack is supposed to overcome this issue and allow you to restore to ANY computer that is capable of running the Operating System.

If this is in fact true then its worth twice the price.

If this is so, then it’s a rather easy route for the less-than-honest to violate the EULA…….Any comments in this regard?????

Yea, what about this? How about if one of you who have this program give it a shot (in the name of science) and tell us what happens?

    • in reply to: Strange Hotmail #1236887

Needing some help please ,Using a Gateway nv54,on win 7sys, Just installed Skype next day All hotmail page had changed and there was no toolbar, very awkward to use..any Ideas apart from deleting Skype ?? Thanks for any help

      John,

I have no idea what could have happened, but I would uninstall Skype and re-install. Be sure to use something like REVO uninstall to be sure get all parts of Skype out before re-install. Also re-boot after removing Skype. Let us know if this helped.

    • in reply to: Free imaging software #1236862

Norm , At the risk of becoming tedious… this is my last word… Plus Pack would be useful if you “toast” your “motherboard”. Also when you have developed enough confidence in whatever “imaging” program you choose, you will be doing things that you would never have thought of doing without a backup program …. then you will be using it! ..etc…. Figure this picture is worth more than whatever i could say about “TI” Regards Fred

Norm,The plus pack allows your image to be placed onto an entirely different PC. To place your Image onto a new HD in the same PC, I have read that you do not need the Plus Pack, although I have never had to try this. The thread in Security and Backupsgoes into a lot more detail.Obviously in order to place your Image onto an entirely different PC you would necessarily have to delete it from the original PC to prevent going against the EULA.

      Fred, Ted,

Please, you are not being tedious. These are the kind of comments I’m looking for.

The comment about using the image on an entirely different machine (or motherboard) is confusing me. Putting the EULA aside for the moment, I thought that the latest versions of Windows will not work if introduced to another motherboard or major hardware change. I assume you would still need the original disc to register a change in hardware. Doesn’t the OS record and report the chip and motherboard and doesn’t the EULA state that only one unique copy of the OS can be used with any given chip and motherboard? I always worry about a motherboard burnout (I’ve been down that rodd before). But then I was able to use my existing XP disc on the new system.

    • in reply to: Windows 64-bit is here to stay #1236858

Do we need 64 bit? No of course not. But we don’t need a microwave, or an electric watch, or any number of things that a good old fashion house and buggy can’t provide. But hey it’s new and different.

The biggest farce I’ve seen is MS’s use of the ribbon in Office. If the ribbon was used on the first version of Office, then the “old” menu would be new and pushed on us as progress. Go figure.
