Hijackthis is a very good program howver, the log files need someone with knowledge to discern which entries need to be removed. Remove the wrong entires and serious problems may result. It checks only slevtive areas of the Windows registry. It does not check your hard drive per se for targets. It cannot detect some targets as they have desgined themselves in such a way as to not use the registry HJT scans or re-establish their prescence on machines in a new manner such as Coolwebsearch, Adtomi, Peper.A (sandbox), Vx2.betterinternet and other transponders. Other tools are being developed bu individuals to combat this plague

You may want to download one the many anti-trackware programs and perform a scan. Some of the popular ones are Ad-aware 6, Spy Sweeper, Spybot, Pest Patrol

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL markup.

Further to the post about Ad-Aware. this thread seems to be the same problem you are having with SPYWARE icons: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?a…;t=5773&hl=[/url]

You might want to downlaod HIjackthis at http://www.tomcoyote.com[/url%5D.

If you go to the Ad-aware forum site they will ask to post your logfile from Ad-aware 6, instrucitons are contained in the forum. The free version works very well.

Other complimentary software (free) is: SpyBlaster and IE-SPYADSs

I would not recommend in future installing the driver updates from the Microsoft Windows Update site. At times they can be incorrect versions for your hardware and at other times they are not needed, a sort of a false positive. Right now Windows Update says I need I new driver for my Samsung 19″ monitor: WRONG I have checked several times on the Samsung website and my driver is the most recent.

I go to the website of the company that made the hardware and download the driver software directly from their site.

That is assuming that Hotbar is only piece of spyware, malware, foistware etc on the PC there could be quite a few dataminer cookies as well. Sometimes the adware removal software will not remove the adware because they companies change their software, other programs maybe needed to prevent browser hijacking, recommendations how to safely remove all the spyware can be given, other programs can be recommended that don’t contain spyware. In addition, like this forum you can learn a lot from the answers to your questions and others.

I would suggest before remcving anything with either Ad-aware or Spybot that you perform a scan and save the log file. Go to their forum sites and post the log file and have the mods/admins/experts give you direction how to proceed. Always make sure when using these products that the most current version of software is used and the most recent version of the reference files.

My 2 cents I run WIndows 98SE at work and Windows XP Home Ed at home. I find Windows XP to be more stable and boots up faster. I have never had a BSOD with Windows XP in over a year of running it. It rarely locks up and when it does it can be unlocked without crashing my entire computer. Also Windows XP contains extra functionalityy built in so I find I do not have to add so many extra programs. One example is dowmloading a photos from a digital camera.Windows XP has many drivers buit in and so there is no software to load to enable downloads.

Is there any spyware on the computer. You may want to check using Ad-aware or Spybot S&D.

    • in reply to: Pop-Up Ads! (XP/SP1 (Patched)) #665777

I would also suggest that if using Spybot SD or Adaware that you go to their forums, post the log file and ask for advice
