    • in reply to: Reopening Explorer Folders on Reboot #1208978

Try clicking on Start and typing Internet Explorer. If you just deleted the shortcut this may find it. If you’ve removed it…

      1. Close all programs.
      2. Open Control Panel.
      3. Under Programs, click Uninstall a program
      4. In the tasks pane, click Turn Windows features on or off.
      5. In the list of windows features, put a check box next to Internet Explorer 8.

Windows 7 remembers the position/size of the last window that was resized for an application. This becomes a problem when you have multiple instances of Windows Explorer open, as most people like different shortcuts to folders to open in different positions and sizes. I haven’t seen a Windows fix for this besides using 3rd party software.

Windows rights the value after every resize or move, not on close, so if you open explorer 1 and 2. Move/resize 2. Close 2. Close 1. Explorer will open to last move/resize of 2.

Elsewhere someone suggested using Window Manager to help with this issue.

    • in reply to: Windows Live Messenger Starting Automatically #1208969

While using the MSCONFIG utility is a valid option, and certainly one worth knowing, I believe for beginners it is better to turn any AutoRun option off from the application IF it is available. In rare cases I have seen applications reapply the AutoRun setting from their own config every time they are run unless the setting is changed in the app itself. There is no real need to reboot after using MSCONFIG, unless you want to test the configuration.

When Windows Live Messenger shows up, click in an empty area once to make sure it is active, then press ALT-T to display the Tools menu, Press O or click Options…, and then click the Sign In from the options on the left. The first Option to Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows will be checked, click on it to uncheck it and then press Enter on the keyboard. Close messenger and on the next reboot it will not appear!

If you have any problems post a reply

    • in reply to: DVD Copying (legal) in Windows 7 #1208956

Try ImgBurn. Homemade DVD’s will have no copy protection on them, so you can easily use ImgBurn to first create an ISO file of the original DVD, then burn as many copies of the file as you want. It’s free, and runs fine on Windows 7 32 and 64.

    • in reply to: Why XnView IrfanView Wildbit over FastStone? #1193926

… personal preference and expertise … adequate for simple editing … lacks advanced features such as layers, masks etc. … elegant and intuitive interface

See, this is exactly my point, why do so many people use XnView and Irfan when FastStone has an “… elegant and intuitive interface” and NONE of them have advanced editing features that are adequate beyond simple editing. I’m just curious what the features are that people USE, and the appeal, of these other viewers.

Your calendar and contacts can only be synced from one source, so most phones, when using an exchange server, can not also sync with a standalone copy of Outlook. Of course, you can still setup as many mail accounts as you want, ie Exchange, gmail, hotmail, and any other POP or MAPI mail server.

I did have one client that really wanted to have his home calendar on his iPhone, that was hooked into our Exchange server. I used Google Calendars Sync to transfer his home calendar to the web, then a program called gSyncit to copy the google calendar to a Calendar named Home in Exchange (Google Calendars Sync can only sync the default main Calendar).

His contacts are all in Exchange, and thus on his phone. If he really needs one on his home PC he uses Outlook Web Access find it and copy it.

Yep, that one took a few minutes to find; I actually lol’d when I found it, seems the ‘power user’ options keep getting deeper and deeper into the OS interface. Here’s another one I cut from my notes, I’m sure it’s already posted, but I like the ALT shortcut acronym to get back the Windows Explorer Folder Expansion!

      Restore Windows Explorer folder expansion
      – Open Explorer. Click Organize -> Layout -> Menu Bar
      – Click Tools-> Folder Options
      – In Navigation Pane check “Show all folders” AND “Automatically expand to current folder”
      * OR hold ALT key and press T O F then X (ALT-TOFX) Think: To Fix!

    • in reply to: Shared Drive No Longer Shared after Reboot #1192443

Glad that worked for you. Another tip would be to go into the properties of the shortcut to your batch file and set it to Run: Minimized. Now the cmd window won’t be as distracting after you login, it will just show on the task bar for a second or two.

What have you tried to date. If you used the driver that came with Windows 7, head over to nvidia and download the latest version 195.62 (Dec 4, 2009). May also want to see if any of the software products have updates.

    • in reply to: Shared Drive No Longer Shared after Reboot #1192044

I suspect that Windows is looking at your shares before the external drive is initialized, and since it the drive is not yet available, the shares are disconnected. Quick fix would be to write a small script or batch and put it in the startup. Take a look at the NET command. A batch with a line something like

      NET SHARE MySharedPhotos=G:Photos /GRANT:everyone,FULL

Would recreate the share every boot, as long as your external drive is on and assigned the same drive letter each time (ie: if you boot with a flash drive in, Windows may assign the flash G and the external H)

Anyhow, just a thought. Post back if you need more help,

    • in reply to: notification when invitation is forwarded #1189571

I believe this is NOT a rule a user sets up, rather an Exchange 2007 feature. If an invitation is manually forwarded, then you will not see a notification, but if a user has a rule set that automatically forwards an invitation, for whatever reason, than the Exchange server informs you of the forward. You’ll notice on your sample message that it was Exchange that sent the forwarded notification.

    • in reply to: Managing 2 Emails in Outlook 2007 – Exchange Ser #1188971

I like the Virtual PC idea. Alternatively, you could share the calendars and tasks and manage those from your Outlook, but handle all the mail through any other MAPI enabled mail client, like Thunderbird.

    • in reply to: What e-mail client are you using? #1188711

Outlook is overkill for most people. It has lots of great features for an office environment, but for just straight personal email I use Thunderbird. I use Outlook at work with an Exchange Server, and we can share contacts, schedule meetings and rooms, and setup server side filtering rules so the mail is sorted before you even open your Outlook in the morning.

Anyway, I like both apps, just depends on your needs!

    • in reply to: Deleting Windows 7 32-bit to leave 64-bit #1188705

You can not convert a 32 to 64, you’ll have to backup and reinstall. If you can not boot from C and need the DVD in the drive, then the C drive is probably not marked as active. Before reinstall go into your Computer Management (Click Start, type Computer Management) and under Storage-> Disk Management right click on C and select Mark Partition as Active
