There is a simple way with a little registry hack. It does seem odd that in Win7 when you resize you icons to ‘Small’ that the shortcut arrow covers remains huge and covers a good portion of the underlying icon. Anyhow, copy the following into notepad and save it to your desktop as Small Icon.reg

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionexplorerShell Icons]
      “29”=”%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,29″

You can also open RegEdit and add the value. As always, backup your registry or create a restore point so you can revert if something goes wrong. Worked for me. Basically you telling windows to use the 29th icon in the Shell32.dll as the overlay.

Personally I hate the shortcut arrow all together, and have the 29 value above point to a blank.ico file so I have no arrows, but I only recommend that if you fully understand shortcuts, and which are actual files and which are links! Here is the reg key for that…

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionexplorerShell Icons]
      “29”=”C:\Windows\Blank.ico,0″

Of course, you’ll have to create a blank ico file, or download one, and copy it to C:Windows, or modify the path to the proper location,

Until such time that there are new subcategories, I would suggest a quick Google or Bing search for ‘Windows 7 tips’ and Window 7 guides’ etc. Lots of good stuff out there!

No way to ‘deactivate’ a Windows license, you will probably have to go through a phone activation, just tell them, if they ask, that it is only being installed on ONE machine, and your just reloading it. Shouldn’t be a problem.

    • in reply to: Screen Savers #1210972

Another nifty way is to right click on the Screen Saver (or any) file and choose Send To… and then Desktop (Create Shortcut).

As Peter said, right click and drag is a great way to work with files so you get options when you drop them. I try and teach people to use this method instead of a normal drag on drop so they know explicitly what they’re doing, especially when working between drives (a drag and drop moves files on same drive but copies between drives)

Try downloading Sysinternals Process Explorer (Google it and download from Microsofts site; it’s free). It is a much more informative!

They also have a bunch of other useful free utilities, my other favourite is Autoruns (a MSconfig on steroids)

Try downloading sysinternals process explorer (Google it and download from Microsofts site) and see if something is running that shouldn’t be, or is eating up CPU time. Would also consider a system restore back to when it was working. Also might want to run a Malware scan.

    • in reply to: Alter picture timestamp due to wrong time zone #1210860

It’s worth noting that an image file has two different time stamps, one is the file time stamp, the other the EXIF Timestamp written into the file.

FastStone can change either, or set either one to the same value as the other. Most importantly, it can apply the change to all selected files. Big time saver!

This leads to another feature, tagging. You can tag files using the Tag menu (pull Tag menu down and select ‘Allow File Tagging’). You can tag files across sessions by pressing the key, and then use the tag menu to select all tagged files (within the current folder). This is useful as you browse through the pictures, even in full screen, to select the ones you want for editing, rotating (if camera does not write orientation into the EXIF) and date changes.

      Cheers,

      Hi Indian,

In the Freeware thread below there are two highly recommended photo viewers/editors. One, FastStone, says it can edit EXIF info. It has a CNET 4 star rating and, of course, it’s free. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Specifically, in the added features in version 3.7 (current version is 4.0) it states: “Now it is possible to adjust EXIF Timestamp by both hours and minutes using the “Change Timestamp” tool under “Tools” menu”

      Hope this helps

    • in reply to: FastStone Capture #1210857

In FastStone, when viewing an image full screen, two good keys to know are A (Actual Size) and B (Best Fit). Of course, you can always use the + and – keys to zoom in and out.

Teresa, your instructions are for the ScreenSaver Control Panel. He wants to create a shortcut to the actual screen saver file. This is handy if the screen saver is set to require a password; you can now instantly start the screen saver so others can’t access your files or desktop if you step out for a minute. If your screen saver is set to show photos it’s nice to start it when you want. Personally I prefer not having a password on the screen saver, I just use Win+L to lock the work station.

On a side note, the freeware Picasa program installs a ‘Google Photo Screen Saver’ that works very well, and can display from multiple folders on your PC, and from your Picasa online albums. If you have dual monitors it displays a different photo on each. A nice feature is the ability to hit the space bar to bring up a menu to go back to the previous pictures (our screen saver is always flipping through vacation photos, so it’s not uncommon to return to a forgotten pic for a better look or to show others!)

      Cheers,

      Nathan

Go to Start Menu. In “Search programss and files space “, type screensaver. Right click and drag “Change screen saver” to desktop and release. Select “create shortcuts here”. Also, you can control the waiting period for your screen saver before it starts.

      Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: DVD Shrink #1210828

I use DVD Shrink under Win7 64 without any issue. What issues are you having? I don’t use it for decrypting, just to remove audio streams from iso’s, and it’s been working fine on two different PC’s. If the problem is with the install, I never installed it, just copied the DVD Shrink folder from my XP box (under C:Program Files).

    • in reply to: Freeware outdoes Windows' built-in system tools #1209151

I’ll second the Search Everything app. Runs on Win 7 32 and 64, too. It only indexes the file pathnames, so it is quick. It’s helped me find many files, I even access it remotely where it runs on our server so I can help users find files that they have lost in their terrible filing structure of 10000 folders! Also recommend you check out http://www.ninite.com where you can automatically download and install this and many other apps unattended.

A free utility that has impressed me is Search Everything by voidtools (website voidtools.com). It seems to find files from wildcard filename searches hundreds of times faster than the search facility built in to Windows Explorer on Win XP. I have no connection to the company, just a satisfied user.

    • in reply to: Desktop icons won't stay put! #1209146

Right click on the desktop, then click on view. Is auto arrange icons checked? If it is uncheck it.

Auto arrange is instant, so if he can arrange his icons then auto arrange is unchecked. There are others out there having the same issue, and have not found a fix, though for some it has gone away after changing some settings. Some are thinking it is a problem with the sleep function, others think it’s a shut down issue.

Might be worth making a new acct and see if the same thing happens.

    • in reply to: XP Mode Doesn't See USB Ports #1209015

True, you are supposed to have the device driver working in Win 7 for the XP mode to use it as properly, but there is a work around for the Palm. If you install the Palm Desktop in XP mode, you can press the HotSync button, then immediately pull down the USB menu in the XP Mode menubar and click Palm Handheld Attach. The HotSync software then kicks in on XP and it syncs just fine. You do have to do this each time you Hot Sync.

    • in reply to: XP Mode Doesn't See USB Ports #1209000

In XP Mode pull down the Tools menu and click Enable Integration Features. After it installs and reboots, there will be a USB menu item that let’s you attach devices on you Win7 USB ports.

      Cheers,
