I use Win8 on my desktop, smartphone wireless and take my iPad on trips. I enjoy the mix of different software on my devices. I think it makes the companies more competitive and interesting.

Microsoft knows it has to change and I think the last few years show they have tried (Win8 for example). I recently switched to Win8 and after a few weeks had it tweaked to include a lot of the Win7 features. Win9 should include the capability of using a Classic or the new Metro interface. Or, perhaps, include the capability of toggling each. I do miss my gadgets on Win8.

It’s difficult to imagine our digital future without MS in it. It could happen, but I believe they will continue to be a major player in our digital lives.

Win7 should handle just about anything you throw at it. The older programs I have that will not work on Win7 I put on my XP Virtual drive and they work fine.

I would like to implement the changes you describe, but am unsure of where to place them in the registry. Also, will they work on Win7 64 bits?

Did you remove the check mark in the Startup tab of msconfig, or did you remove the shortcut from the Startup Folder? Make sure it is removed from both.

I believe they are referring to Virtual XP. I upgraded from Vista Ultimate (64bit) to Win7 Ultimate (64 bit). Ultimate and Pro have VXP and in my opinion is worth the extra money. I have a few 32bit programs that will not run on a 64 bit system. I worked around that problem with Vista by installing those programs on my laptop which ran XP. Now, I have those programs installed on my desktop running under VXP. It is not an ideal solution, but it works.

I have a diet program that will not run on my 64bit Win7 Ultimate system. I installed Virtual XP and now it works fine. You have to have Win7 Pro or Ultimate to have the Virtual XP feature. I cannot tell that my machine has taken a performance hit with that feature installed.

I use Powerdesk 7.0 also. Have you tried right clicking on your PD icon and run as administrator?

Right click taskbar, select “Task List Setup” and then select size needed.

Definitely not normal. I suspect your video card is overloaded. I suggest you lower your video resolution and see if that makes a difference.

I suspect it is your registry causing the problem. Somehow, the old registry was loaded and then, apparently, several weeks later the newer one was loaded. I use a program called RollBack Rx (http://www.horizondatasys.com/169614.ihtml) on my desktop and laptop PC and it solved a similar problem I had with Vista Ultimate many months ago. With this program installed I feel confident that whatever I do, or the system does on its own, I can restore back to normal. This may not be the answer your are looking for, but sometimes, you get back to normal and move on.

I never allow web browsers to remember passwords to places that have access to my money, credit cards, etc., and my password to those places are difficult to decipher. I do let my browser remember passwords to forums, blogs, newspapers and the like. My favorite online password manager is Roboform (they have a free & paid version- I use the paid). I also use a portable password program called PasswordSafe that I have on a thumb drive (http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/). I use PasswordSafe to construct all my passwords to money places.

Shutdown.exe is located in the System32 directory. You could create a shortcut on your desktop (right click on file) and then drag it to the Quick Launch area of your taskbar.
Here is a complete list of Win7 shortcuts:

    • in reply to: Vista 64 to Win 7 64 #1191417

I recently upgraded from Vista 64 to Win7 64. I had a problem that took me several weeks to resolve, so I would suggest that you retain your current Vista setup in case you encounter problems.

There are those that believe anti virus software is totally unnecessary. Be aware that once you install Norton it will not be an easy job to remove it. There is very little risk of being infected before you install Norton. I had to remove Kaspersky Internet Security to upgrade from Vista to Win7. I had a problem with the upgrade and reverted back to Vista for two weeks while I figured out how to resolve the problem. So, for two weeks I was without an anti virus program. When I finally reinstalled Kaspersky and did a complete scan of my system it detected nothing.

    • in reply to: Installing Win 7 over Win 7 RC #1190229

I installed Virtual XP over my Win7 Ultimate (64 bits) last week (12/2/09) and it works quite well with my legacy apps. I have trouble getting it to recognize external hardware, especially my Zen Plus mp3 player. I am still working on getting my external devices installed on Virtual XP.
