A couple of 10BaseT net cards ($15 ea) and a cross-over cable will get you in business at a speed of 10MB.

As I recall from ancient history, DCC transfers bits serially.

Come on guys! Lay off – Leif is our hero!

    • in reply to: Registry Problem #544721

Did the S32evnt1.dll file restore to said folder when you cleaned it up?

I have said file in said folder on three PCs:
W2k with Norton AV 2001, file size 36k dated August 2000
W2k with Norton AV 2002, file size 36k dated August 2001
XP-RC1 with Norton AV 2002, ditto.
Norton System Works for W2k is not one of my favorites – it has jammed up dual boot a couple of times.

Having recently converted a peer workgroup of a dozen old w95s to newer W2Ks (450 to 800 Mh, 64 to 128 ram), no trouble with cards except old ISA modem and sound cards. If cards are PnP and PCI, then W2k should set them up without further notice.

If you care about security, then by all means set them up under NTFS, take advantage of ‘permissions’ on shared resources. Be alert to preserving Administrator passwords.

You will be pleased with the toughness/security of this operating environment.

If Leif says W2k, then you must listen. If you get a new box with W2k, then good. Some boxes (Dell) will give you a $US20 upgrade to XP when it is OEM-ready. This is my route.

Thanks Leif. You are indeed a noble person. I would like to start a movement to elevate you to “Lord Leif”.

There is a small book “Windows 2000 Commands -Pocker Reference” published by O’Rilley, edited by Aeleen Frisch, March 2001, $9.95. I believe it is available at Amazon.com, also look at http://www.Oreilly.com

Thank you WW. Just what I was looking for. So far, I like the fast switching feature.

    • in reply to: Activation #542507

My RC1 boots faster (than W98 and W2k), all apps load faster, and there have been no errors of any sort. I definitely will buy the commercial release when the beta expires.

    • in reply to: Num Lock registry setting not persisting #541508

Make certain that numlock is ‘on’ when you logoff. The ‘2’ is a memory setting, of the logoff state.

    • in reply to: Norton 2002 Ver 8.00.58 #541426

By coincidence, my 2000 expired and this is a paid renewal. I have no info on upgrade to 2002 for unexpired registration. Seems only fair that that a no-cost download would be offered.

Never mind – I found it! Surprise-Surprise. XP-RC1 has ‘msconfig’ as a run command. And the startup switches are there.

    • in reply to: 2nd hard drive for Win-XP #541060

Thanks Dave, Norton 2002 is in the mail. Also got my DSL working (using it here). XP has a built-in PPPoE setup wizard in the control panel. Follow the Network and Internet Connections menus to the broadband area. I will post a link in the XP forum to a setup procedure (it works for Earthlink).

    • in reply to: 2nd hard drive for Win-XP #540915

Thanks Dave for the sage advice. 2nd HD is up and running fine on XP-RC1, dual boot, with W2k on the primary drive. Will now try to get XP support from Norton, and the DSL IP that provides my PPPoE.

      Thanks again…

Thanks for the advice and warning. I will proceed with caution.
